Summary: I wanted to say that I love this camera for its small size and innovative camera grip handle. Also I wanted to clear up any confusion on the video editing that I've seen on some of the other user reviews. First the issue of transferring video from the camcorder to the pc: This is done using movie shaker through the firewire connection. I have done this successfully using windows xp pro on a pentium 4 system. When you use movie shaker to transfer video, it scans your existing micro-mv tape and creates thumbnail listings of each scene on the tape. You can highlight a specific thumbnail and then capture that scene to movieshaker which will create an mmv file. You can then export this to mpeg1, mpeg2, dvi, quicktime, realmedia, and avi formats. My understanding is that the clipped audio other people were reporting happened on the import of the video. Having had a conversation with tech support, sony says that this has been fixed in the latest version of movie shaker which is 3.11 (orange cd). You'll need to pick this up from sony if you are having this problem. Also, I found that while using QuickTime 6.0, I was having clipped audio on export to any of the formats. After speaking to tech support, they suggested that I downgrade to Quicktime 5.0 which resolved the problem. Evidently Movieshaker was written before quicktime 6.0 was released and has compatibility issues. All in all, having resolved this issue, I am very happy with the quality of the video and the capabilities of the camcorder. Also, I was able to test out the video capture with Pinnacle Studio 8 (version 8.5) which correctly captured the video and audio as well. The other thing I forgot to mention is that, you can capture high quality mpg video directly to the memory stick on the camcorder itself. I purchased a 128 meg memory stick and have had no problems with this. Also there is no conversion issue to deal with, since the video is already in mpeg format. So overall, If you really like this camcorder for all of the reasons listed in the other reviews, I wouldnt let the compatibility issues detract you from making this purchase. I have found that I have been able to work around them and that sony has already provided some fixes.

Compact, Easy to Use, Great Video Quality
Pros: I have owned this camera for almost two years now. It is by far the best video camera I have ever owned. It is easy to set up and use. I connect it to my computer and save clips or entire videos onto my home network. The menus on the camera offer some
Cons: I dont have much use for Bluetooth, it is really just a battery hog. Otherwise, no complaints!

Summary: Let me start with the negatives first. First and foremost, the software provided (MovieShaker 3.1) to transfer film to your PC Does Not work under Windows 98 or Windows 98SE. Win98, 98SE is not supported by Sony. I believe only Win2000, ME and XP are supported. If you can get it to work (in win98), your basically on your own. Second, the record button is more like a toggle switch, and can be easily bumped accidentally. If you accidentally record a few seconds over the first part of a scene, you’ll pretty much delete the rest of that scene. In other words MovieShaker will not “see” beyond your accidental recording. Third, when exporting a finished movie in DV-AVI format, only 9 minutes of film can be exported and is about 2 gigs huge. In MPEG2, only 65 min can be exported and will run 4gigs huge. 9 minutes of MPEG1 (I believe mpeg1 will allow up to 65 min) will run you about 145mbs. Very big files, I have not yet been able to create a DVD, or VCD for viewing on my TV. Forth, “NightShot” in total darkness is only good close up; you need the Infrared lighting for anything to be visible. “Super NightShot” is slow and choppy. Fifth, it does not include Firewire (i.Link) cable or Adapter. To buy from Sony you’ll need to pay an extra $100 bucks for their EZEditorMV package. Sixth, Bluetooth Networking is useless unless you already have a Bluetooth Network set up. It does not include any hardware (Modem, Adapters etc.). Ok, now the positives. The Touch Screen is cool and the film quality is great (the more lighting, the better of course). Still pictures are not too bad. I have not taken many Stills however. The MovieShaker software is actually very easy to use. You can’t edit much in terms of frame by frame, but you can rearrange scene order, add transitions, use included effects, add narration, I believe you can add music also. Once film is transferred to your PC and made into a finished Movie, its quality is actually pretty good. DV-AVI format has great quality (near perfect from original) and you’ll notice has very little loss in quality, but can only be converted in 9 minute chunks. MPEG1 can be converted in 65 minute chunks, its quality is good, but you will see some loss in quality. I have not played with MPEG2 format yet. Audio is over all pretty good, no complaints by me. Final thoughts: Overall this is a very nice Camcorder, I am once again pleased by another Sony product. This product is great for your casual shooting needs (going on vacations, filming outdoors, even indoors -with good lighting-). If you’re a pro, you might consider something else. I’d like to see this camcorder come with a neck strap (only includes a Hand strap), and for its retail price of 1,499.99 I’d also like to see it include a Firewire cable and adapter, or a larger Memory Stick. So in spite of its negatives, I would recommend this Camcorder to friends.

Also, what about the software? I cannot run it on my older PC either. I finally went out and just replaced it and sold it for $100 used. -
How about making it compatible for industry standard editing software and os'?
Pros: sleek, stylish. cool flash function comes in handy for night clubs,,.. The handle is great for filming but could be mistaken for a pistol by athorities.
Cons: not compatible with Mac. Therefore if you are a mac user like myself, you'll be stuck watching your un edited tapes with annoying pauses between each scene. I learned my lesson,.. buyer beware... I threw mine into the ocean for the fishes and bought myse

Awesome camera in a tiny package!
Pros: This camera has great video quality from an incredibly small and feature packed camera. This camera is smaller than my Sony DSC-S75 still camera and fits right in my pocket to take anywhere, including pro sporting events. The MPG3 editing options are limi
Cons: Sony's commitment to the Micro MV format is questionable at best... do your research.

Great camera, weak compatibility
Pros: I absolutely loved the physical aspects of this camera. The size and weight were great...however for the bigger than average person u might find the size troublesome. The viewfinder and LCD picture quality were great. The buttons were in very convenien
Cons: On the other hand, I did in fact return this camera due to software compatibility issues and its not Mac friendly @ all. I stuck w/ Mini DV so that I can actually use all the editing options I have available. I agree with some of the others...this is a
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Sony
- Part number: DCR-IP55
- Description: The DCR-IP55 provides a stunning range of powerful shooting and network integration features in one of Sony's most easy to use and elegantly designed models. The new look of the DCR-IP55 has a familiar feel, incorporating many tried and trusted design features found in early Super8 cameras - however dramatically squeezed in size. One example of this is the camcorder's handgrip, providing perfectly ergonomic means of securing the camcorder whilst shooting. The DCR-IP55 offers sophisticated network connectivity options, including Bluetooth wireless connectivity. The DCR-IP55 incorporates a touch sensitive panel, which can be used to control many camcorder functions including camera (spot meter & spot focus), memory (playback zoom & MemoryMix) and video (playback zoom & end search). This is all achieved using just one finger. By using a supplied stylus pen, the camcorder's network functions can also be controlled, which brings web surfing and emailing to the speed and convenience of a PDA. An additional illustration of the ingenuity of this new touch panel is spot focus, where the user touches on a point on the built-in LCD monitor screen and the camera automatically focuses on it. In addition to its i.LINK capabilities, the DCR-IP55 possesses a USB connection for the transfer of large amounts of audiovisual material to your PC. USB streaming allows users to connect the camcorder to their PC via the USB terminal, install USB driver software (not needed if running WindowsXP) and specialist third party conferencing software (such as Windows Netmeeting) and the camcorder is transformed into a sophisticated Webcam. This facility enables users to link up with distant friends and transmit live video via the Internet. Another option providing total PC connectivity is Memory Stick: the DCR-IP55 incorporates MPEGMOVIE AD: this advanced e-Movie function lets users store up to 5 minutes of video material on an supplied 8MB Memory Stick before transferring it directly to your PC for editing, archiving or emailing to friends. Switched to the highest quality-mode, you can even record up to 13 minutes in VHS-like quality on a 128MB Memory Stick. Also the transfer of footage from tape to MemoryStick or the other way round is possible.
