- Bottom Line:
- Sony's Handycam DCR-SX45, SX65, and SX85 standard-definition camcorders pack a megazoom lens at a reasonable price; one look at the standard-definition video, though, and you might regret not spending a bit more for an HD model.

Sony Handycam DCR SX85 (Silver) price range: $149.99 - $332.59
- Reviewed by: Joshua Goldman

The good: The Sony Handycam DCR-SX45, SX65, and SX85 are easy-to-use ultracompact camcorders with good active electronic image stabilization and a built-in USB cable for quick uploads.
The bad: The DCR-SX45, SX65, and SX85 produce very soft and noisy video with noticeable fringing on subjects even at small sizes. There are no mic or headphone jacks, and the electronic image stabilization won't help you with the lens fully extended.
The bottom line: Sony's Handycam DCR-SX45, SX65, and SX85 standard-definition camcorders pack a megazoom lens at a reasonable price; one look at the standard-definition video, though, and you might regret not spending a bit more for an HD model.

Terrible Quality Video!
by katahdin111 on September 3, 2012
Pros: Small compact camera with extended zoom.
Cons: Worst quality video ever.
Summary: I don't know how Sony could have realeased such a poor quality product on the market.

Disappointed!
by Rainey525 on June 17, 2012
Pros: Compact, easy to carry in purse. Nice touch screen, good USB connector onboard
Cons: awful video, very grainey, zoom lens doesn't make a smooth transition while zooming out and back in.
Summary: I am very disappointed with this camcorder due to the video quality. I was expecting much better. It's awful in my opinion and I'm ready to get rid ...

Poor video. I expected more from a Sony product.
by Walknd on April 2, 2012
Pros: Zoom, ease of use.
Cons: Video!!!! What use is a camera with great zoom and ease of use if the video is terrible. As was posted before, it may be good for rendering low quality video but that's about it.

Summary: I have had several Sony products over a period of 20 years so I felt this would be a good purchase. It wasn't. It looks good on the tiny screen, but what a mess when it's enlarged. I got better video with my old Kodak Z712 IS camera in movie mode. I wish I had seen CNET's review before I bought because I wouldn't have wasted my money on it.

Five thumbs down for this epic fail.
by flaboba on January 2, 2012
Pros: It looks good and is easy to use but that is pointless with such poor quality, grainy video.
Cons: Grainy very poor quality video from this product in any lighting. I have camcorders and video from 1998 that are crystal clear. I feel totally ripped off.

Summary: This is a far far inferior product to other Sony cameras I have owned. Im surprised that Sony would actually put out less worthy products instead of improving what they already have. I wouldn't recommend it and I will not be returning to Sony. I tried to find an email address to contact them about this absolute disgrace but couldn't even find that. Customer support, no doubt a call center that handles 10 other companies, did not have any email or other address to contact Sony either. Im very unimpressed with a bad product and no customer back up.

Awful video quality.
by Hanoihancock on October 2, 2011
Pros: Very easy to use.
Cons: Awful video quality. My old Hi-8 and MiniDV cameras capture a SIGNIFICANTLY better picture than this camera. The image quality is only slightly better than a nice mobile phone camera, and is no better than most of the $100 pocket cameras available on t
Summary: Shame on Sony for packaging a $100 low-quality webcam in a $250 nice-looking handheld package. Don't buy this camera.

Decent, affordable camera, ideal for posting to the web
by ElCapitanHolden on June 22, 2011
Pros: Good long zoom for a cheap camera, good in low light and indoor situations, built in USB and a back up USB port that IS compatible with a standard 5 pin USB cable should the built-in fray or stop working. Expandable memory with SDHC cards up to 32 GB, pl
Cons: It is Standard Definition, and the lower resolution really makes it best for posting to sites like Youtube, etc, rather than trying to make some fancy DVD quality movie. Will look horrible on a high definition screen, due to resolution differences.
Summary: Good bang for the buck, a great starter or Webvideo producing camera. Do not go into a $250-300 camcorder with lofty expectations of Hollywood style grandeur, and you'll be ...

bitter disappointment!. Stay Away!
by mbuxbaum on April 25, 2011
Pros: small, good zoom if you can use it. It is absolutely wonderful if used for extreme closeups. Else your old tape camera is better.
Cons: video quality low. there is practically no difference in picture quality between HD and SP. Bright sunny day-back lit display is useless. Has many useless presets. Has two USB connect options Why???. The format is proprietary anyway. You can not plug and
