Great value and quality for the budget shopper
Pros: We bought the Sony Handicam DCR-TRV280 to replace our old Hi-8 Handicam CCD-TRV46. Our initial reaction is that we're happy with it, the picture is noticeably better and the 20x optical zoom is nice to have. The option of computer interface by firewire
Cons: It's not mini-dv or DVD, and 8mm/Hi8 seems to be on the way out, even when used as a digital media. Unlike the more expensive DCR-TRV480, our DCR-TRV280 will NOT play back the analog tapes recorded in our old handicam, which means we can't officially ret

Summary: After perusing all available camcorders, this one piqued my fancy. I bought it after checking it in a well-known consumer mag. I was not disappointed! So far, it has delivered to my expectations. The battery that comes qith it dies quickly, so I invested in an extended life battery and that has taken care of the only problem I have run into.

DOES NOT PLAY ANALOG 8MM TAPES - DON'T FALL FOR FALSE ADVERTISING

Summary: DOES NOT PLAY ANALOG 8MM TAPES. DON'T FALL FOR THE SAME SCAM I DID. This was the main reason I bought it, having a bunch of old family Video8 tapes and having been told by several sources that it would play them There is some false advertising going on, for sure. I had expected better from Sony.
I would have gotten something different, like a DVD cam, if I had known that this was what I would end up with.
Fortunately, my 1985-vintage Handycam still works. Maybe I can work with that and the VCR or a new DVD recorder to process the old tapes. I guess now I'm stuck.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought this camera ONLY so I could play my old 8mm tapes on it to download to my computer in order to burn DVD's. The sales guy told me it could read all 8mm/Hi8 tapes...well, it cannot. Do not be fooled as I was. I returned it and purchased a miniDV also from Sony.

Summary: I am a little annoyed at present. I've been trying for a while now to find the drivers for this camera online. I went to the Sony website and searched around and I was unable to find the drivers for this camcorder. It works nice, don't get me wrong. However I would like to get my video off my camera with ease. Can't do that because sony doesn't offer the drivers for download. They offer the cd that came with the camera for almost $70. I find that to be unnecessarily high. I think this will be the last sony cam I ever buy.

This device is NOT compatible with Windows Vista (any version), despite claims by Sony's web site the drivers are preloaded with the OS. In fact, only 3 Sony devices are compatible, all still cameras. Sony has no plans to update the drivers from XP to Vista. Their solution is to upgrade to firewire (not as durable or RFI resistant, a huge problem in this configuration) for about $150 (cable and software), with no assurance the solution will work.
The low score is based upon Sony's misleading claims, extra expense to be upwardly compatible, and poor customer service on this issue. I plan to replace the device with a high end web camera that is just as capable, durable, and reliable, but costs less than half what their "upgrade solution" would cost. -

Summary: The TRV280 was ok when I first got it, but as you see many other reviews from people saying it doesn't play analog 8mm, It played those fine for me when I first got it, and then it stoped playing them. It would only play hi8..thats fine I guess.
Now two months later it has stoped playing my hi8 tapes...Now im real mad!
It is a over priced piece of junk. Dont buy into its good look.
P.S. Im buying a canon HV20 and I recommend you to do the same. It may be semi-expensive but its worth your money. Its real cool, its got a 24p mode where you can film like the pro's in that true cinematic feel! It actually has a mic jack which the TRV280 doesn't have. ...And its battery life is not 24 hour or what ever thay say it is...its more like 1 hour 24 min.
So even if you dont care for that professional feel, still dont buy this camera its way over priced. You can get this quality from somewhere else cheaper.
I am just getting so mad writing this review thinking about how coned I got...Im SO MAD! Im going to go outside after im done typing this review and destroy it with a 2x4 piece of wood!
