This camera fits a niche but can do more too
by kawwee on February 20, 2012
Pros: light weight, fast start up, great images, flexibility with longer zoom, it's blue!
Cons: lack of certain manual controls - aperture and shutter priority

Summary: I really needed a camera with decent flexibility and light weight that I could take for hiking and other outdoor sports (let's see if I can avoid dropping it in water!). And, this may sound silly, but I like blue and expect the color to be easier to see (meaning find) among all the stuff you carry on a hike. I've done the hike with a larger, older super zoom but it was a pain (literally). And a cell phone is not an option after a day unless you can wait for it to boot up because you keep it off to save the battery. That's the niche - an S95 or S100 would have been nicer as an all-around camera (give me a bigger sensor any day) but I can't afford to crunch it in the field. So, this camera has to do double duty as the family camera as well - and it does a great job. Again, it's fast, the auto modes work just fine for most situations and the images are definitely a cut above any cell phone camera I've laid eyes on. If I had to consider it again, I might have gone for the new version to get the digic 5 processor but the shorter lens on the new camera would have been a turn off. Frankly, this works just fine.
