The bad: Shot-to-shot performance still a little sluggish; no HD video.

My wife loves it!
by ggraeber on November 12, 2009
Pros: GREAT photo quality, lots of features, easy navigation of features, finally the return of flippable LCD back screen as with her old Powershot, great low light noiseless pics of children! It has a viewfinder rather than just the screen.
Cons: The price is steep but that is about it for an advanced amateur this is a great camera.

Summary: My wife takes A LOT of pictures and is exceptionally happy with the new G11. Image quality and low light pics are incredible. Many ways to adjust low light capabilities, and they are mostly taken without noise while capturing shots of our young children running around. Outstanding nature and macro shots of bugs, lizards, fungi, and trees in fall color! So far a great camera after 2 weeks and about 1000 shots. Feels and looks like professional shots to this amateur. Highly Recommended!!

Excellent Camera with minor flaws
by PaulvanWijk on November 10, 2009
Pros: The LCD can flip out which is essential for me. Many buttons and wheels give a quick access to all important functions. The function of one button can be set as desired. This makes the camera a wonderful instrument to use.
Cons: ? The lens of the PowerShot G11 gives in wide angle position some barrel distortion.
? The i-contrast functions is sometimes greyed out in the menu and cannot be chosen any more.
? The optical viewfinder shows only 75% of the picture to be taken.Summary: ? The lens of the PowerShot G11 gives some barrel distortion, only in wide angle position. This can be corrected in Photoshop in a matter of seconds.

? The i-contrast functions is sometimes greyed out in the menu and cannot be chosen any more. There is no explanation in the manual and this may be an error in the software. A work around is to reset the camera. It is a happy coincidence that the reset function does not affect all settings.
? The optical viewfinder shows only 75% of the picture to be taken. Especially on the bottom the difference is major.
- Nowhere in the documentation: The bit depth is 8 bits per colour and the gamut is Adobe 1998
? The 193 pages manual is only supplied on CD. Intensive study is needed to get the best out of this camera. It is a camera meant for experienced users.

Best non SLR anywhere near its price range
by mauisean on June 7, 2010
Pros: As a professional photographer I need a small compact for some assignments. My other backup camera died on a trip, so I dropped in to a local store and picked up the G11. Meets all my needs. Color depth, overall metering, control, Raw function.
Cons: slow start up. Have to be careful with type of automatic focus chosen (whether center or face, etc). Give camera time to 'see' the scene in low light. Insure you read the manual. It does come with manual, regardless of other review stating only on CD

Summary: Anyone just starting with serious photography who isn't ready to step up to an SLR will find this camera extraordinarily versatile, the capacity of this camera to take stunning photos is there. Unlike all the point and shoot cameras with mediocre results, if you want the absolute best quality photos in a small camera , this is it. I accidentally left my charger in a hotel and had to shoot almost 1000 shots with only one battery, and the camera came thru for me. Insure you read the manual. This is a camera to experiment with, although in an pinch it can do very well as a point and shoot. Highly recommended.

Most phenomenal camera in it's class without a doubt
by Sled-Hedz on April 18, 2010
Pros: Unsurpassed in it's photo clarity. The fit and finish are unequaled. Battery life is excellent. Ease of use on the settings are fantastic and the dials operate with ease, even is very cold weather. The best camera in it's class!
Cons: Can't find any and believe me, I'm very hard to please.
Summary: If you want SLR quality in a smaller package, this is the camera for you. Low light quality is excellent. Outdoor scenery shots are breathtaking. Portrait shots are exquisite. Action ...
Summary: If you want SLR quality in a smaller package, this is the camera for you. Low light quality is excellent. Outdoor scenery shots are breathtaking. Portrait shots are exquisite. Action shots are remarkable. I highly recommend this camera for the beginner who can afford this, because you can start out by setting this camera on auto and taking high quality photo's, while you are learning to use all of the control in the manual settings.. You won't go wrong with this camera and the Optical Viewfinder is a great Plus!!!

Very good but annoying flaws
by plcjr on February 15, 2010
Pros: The 28mm is nice (I traded up from a G9). Great at 200 ISO or less. Excellent flexibility of settings. Very good standard video capture.
Cons: The dial. In cold weather forget trying to set anything properly. No zoom on the video (was on my G9?). White balance problems.
Summary: Nice camera but functions on the dial don't seem as crisp as my G9 was. The pictures also lack a certain sharpness of the G9. The color is better ...
Summary: Nice camera but functions on the dial don't seem as crisp as my G9 was. The pictures also lack a certain sharpness of the G9. The color is better on the G11. The G9 had HD video, not on the G11, but the regular video looks better than most video cameras. I could also zoom video on the G9. But I wanted a wide lens and the 28mm is nice (but you give um 120-200 zoom with this model). Not sure if the trade up was worth it.

IT IS ALL ABOUT PICTURE QUALITY
by COWBELL on March 8, 2010
Pros: Out of all my canon point and shoot cameras I will choose the G11 if it is a important picture and I have to get it right. The ISO is very good between 80 and 800, I even have alot of keepers at 1600 iso. It is just a good all around family camera.
Cons: No camera is perfect

Summary: I use a wrist strip instead of the neck strap. The control dails are so easy to use on the fly. I never thought a compact point and shoot camera could produce such great photos. I am getting about 400 to 450 pictures per charge. The 461.000 megapixle tilt/swivel LCD screen is bright, very clear and very versatile(grand kids, shooting down to thier level without getting down on your knees). The G11 just has a good heft and feel to it, this is not a lite nor little camera by no means. It has a good sharp lens, the shot to shot and flash shot to shot times are good>(coming from a point and shoot world. From using a bunch of canon cameras before I felt the G11 was easy to use. I like all the lights on top of the camera and how they stay off if that function is not available in the mode that you are in, thats just me though...I love useing the 270EX speedlite with the bounce flash on the G11s hot shoe... I mostly take pictures of bear in the Smokey Mountians(cades cove) and I love chaseing the grand kids around takeing thier pictures.

Great camera after 70 years using film cameras.
by gofjohn on August 2, 2011
Pros: 1. Flippable "Vari-Angled" LCD image viewer reduces need for optical view finder.

Summary: I am primarily a family and travel vacation photographer. I started with an Argus camera as a young teen-ager in the late 1930s, borrowed a Leica for special occasions, graduated to a Pentax SLR with multiple lenses, succumbed to several Pentax and Olympus point and shoot cameras, before finally making the plunge to digital last year after much procrastinating, watching friends take pictures at light levels my film camera couldn't cope with.
I wanted the best image quality without actually going to an SLR and all the accouterments, and I wanted an optical image finder. All my searches kept bringing me back to the G11, which I finally purchased just before the G-12 came on the market.. I understand that has better video, but I don't do video. I have had the camera almost a year, and am very pleased with my choice.
The outstanding feature for me has been the Vari-Angled LCD screen, which (1) keeps the screen protected when not in use by folding in against the camera, and (2) allows shooting from a wide variety of angles from one position, holding over your head or shooting upwards from below the waist. I am most surprised that I hardly ever use the optical view finder which was my #1 requirement!! This great feature is overlooked in most reviews.
I have had my G11 almost a year and am still learning how to use the many many features. (Just ordered a more complete instruction book to supplement the limited small book that comes with the camera.)
The other big surprise was the incredibly fast warranty service by Canon when I dropped the camera with the battery latch open. I had left the camera with the latch open while recharging the battery, inadvertently dropped the camera on a terrazo floor, breaking the latch holder so it would not close. I e-mailed Canon, they replied with instructions where to send, and I took it to UPS on Monday evening. The camera was back on my doorstep by UPS on Thursday morning, completely repaired and all at no charge, even though the damage was entirely my fault. No questions asked. No hassle. That was real customer service!
A great camera, from a fine company, and I know I have only scratched the surface in learning all it can do. -
Best Point and shoot camera I've ever had.
by m.colyer on March 22, 2011
Pros: Use it alongside my Nikon D5000 - handy on days when I don't want to carry weight. Always shoot RAW except when I shoot wide angle which is jpeg only. Found photo quality to be very good and I've owned many P &S cameras over the years. Lens distortion
Cons: Video is not very clever but then I didn't buy this camera for its video.
Summary: If I had to replace this camera I would simply buy another or, the next in line, the G12.

Decent but not great
by tnblkbear on November 15, 2010
Pros: Great pictures, lots of settings and modes, fairly easy to use.
Cons: Shutter lag, auto focus and image stabilization not the best, the ability to get an extra or replacement battery.

Summary: I previously owned the G5 and when looking for a new high end point and shoot, I came back to Cannon. I have to say that I am disappointed in this version in the series. The biggest problems are the shutter lag and the auto focus. Too many times I've missed shots because of the shutter lag. Simply terrible. And I've also had a lot of pictures ruined because the camera was unable to obtain or hold focus for the shot, so I ended up with a lot of blurry pictures. And the most shocking to me was that I could not find an extra or replacement battery in any of the local camera shops or even chains like Best Buy. Really? You can order one but not having use of the camera for a week while waiting for a battery is ridiculous.
