Fantastic digital camera for shooting sublime picture quality
by jims2020 on June 23, 2005
Pros: Great picture quality, astounding optical zoom for this price and a great lens
Cons: None yet - given that the firmware upgraded cameras have fixed their AF flaws too!!

Summary: I had previously had a Canon Rebel SLR with 6.1 MP resolution. I was looking for an upgrade and was finding it hard to decide. Thats when a friend of mine recommended this camera. It has a 8 MP resolution and offers a fantastic 28-200mm zoom!! This kind of a professional lens at this price is unimaginable at this price. The pictures taken using this camera have been of astounding quality. Unlike the Canon rebel SLRs, it is very light weight and gets that professional look with its black body - feel it and you will love its ergonomic design. The flip open LCD screen is a very nice feature - kudos to Canon for a well thought feature. I love it and would highly recommend this camera to anyone. If anybody differs please ask him to look at the picture quality this camera can give you and he would most certainly fall for it!!!

After the firmware upgrade, I have nothing to crib about this camera. If your camera gives you great pictures, thats all you need to worry about and thats what this camera does. Use it and you will love it.10 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: It's too bad that whom ever wrote the editor's review didn't actually try the camera. It certainly does use a wheel to navigate white balance and many other functions. The thumb switch, or the wheel can be used, making it even more flexible. It just bothers me to read a review, where the reveiwer doesn't have the facts straight. Focusing is improved about 300 percent by downloading the new firmware from the Canon site. I'll stop now

Absolutely fantastic camera!

Summary: I come from a long line of 35mm film cameras, the last being a Canon EOS Elan. The PowerShot Pro1 is my 5th digital camera, the last being an Olympus C4040. I recently upgraded the firmware on the Pro1 and it now focuses faster/better, less shutter lag, and performs better overall than before. Pictures with this camera are superb, to say the least. I love the tilt LCD display on the back, and the camera overall can't be beat. It was between this camera and the Olympus C8080. A local camera store permitted me to take both cameras outside of the store and shoot comparison pictures. There was NO COMPARISON. Even the sales person was surprised at how much better the Pro1 pictures were over the C8080. I've had the Pro1 now for a year and enjoy it every time I go to take pictures. It feels so "professional" for such a little camera...with BIG features. The digital zoom is a real performer. I've taken test photos and the digital zoom outperforms optical, cropped to the size of the digital. This is an exception to the rule that digital isn't as good as optical. Not so with the Pro1. Before the firmware upgrade (get it at the Canon website) I would have rated this a "9". With the upgrade it is definately a "10" now.

There's a bug in the camera software...
Pros: I would have to say that the 8meg pics are stunning. But compared with the G series, you probably couldn't tell the difference if you develop 11X17 or less. That's about it.
Cons: The autofocus is very frustrating. Takes a long time to adjust and by then, you've lost the moment. It's not a camera for someone wanting candids. If you compose your shots, then you'll be fine. You'll miss most of the "quick, get the camera" shots though

Get the firmware
Pros: There are currently only four non SLR, 8 megapixel digital cameras in exsistance, with a focal lenght of 28mm to 200mm. With the firmware upgrade the Pro 1 is probably the best in the bunch.
Cons: The only problem I had with this camera is that before the firmware upgrade, there was a delay when you zoomed in. Because of that I had some dificulty getting comfortable with the camera. I always felt like I was turning the ring the wrong way. Althou

Cons: CONS: The CCD sensor caused lots of trouble for me - has to return my first two, I had bad light spots on the ccd on low shutter speeds (and sometimes visible at 1/60 flash shots). My Nikon 5400 (similar Sony CCD) also had to be replaced for this. 8MP

Great Quality Pictures & Decent Video
Pros: The lens quality (optics) are very good on the camera and the optical zoom of 7X (equivalent of 28-200mm) makes for great portrait shots with a wide “depth of field” range. Also due to good and large lens the aperture at 7X zoom is a F/3.5 (fairly good)
Cons: The main problem I had with the camera was that it had a sluggish auto focus. The Canon Company however released a firmware upgrade that fixed that issue (it also fixed the zoom ring responsiveness). All new cameras should already include the latest fir

The Canon Pro1 is a nice all around camera with some excellent features.
by vizslakeeper on December 13, 2005
Pros: Versitility! I love the 8 MP clarity and the adjustable viewfinder. All of that and a video camera, too!
Cons: SLOW low light AF, even with firmware upgrade! Also the placement of the manual focus button makes it very easy to accidentally turn on while shooting

Let's start with the ...Summary: I think it is helpful to know the perspective of the reviewer, and I am an avid photographer that rarely takes photos of static subjects.
Let's start with the bad first: the auto focus stinks! I knew that it would be slow in low light, but this worse than I expected. Taking a photo indoors with poor lighting is one thing, but this auto focus is slow and takes several attempts to attain a focus lock even in a very well lit room or in shady areas outdoors, even if the subject is not moving. There is only one AF point, and it is about 1/20th of the viewfinder, which can make it difficult for precise focusing of very close-up shots. I really like the fact that the manual focus has an area that automatically zooms in to make it easier to judge the level of focus you have achieved, which is a good thing, because I accidentally activate it pretty often. And the rapid shoot feature is not as rapid as they purport it to be, unless you want to take your photos on the minimum quality settings.
OK, enough tearing it down, because this is really a good camera overall. For the 'typical' point and shooter that takes primarily scenery and people, this is a great choice. Just be prepared to be patient with the AF at times! I already said that the MF mode is quite good; the auto zoom feature makes it really easy to use. The picture quality is absolutely excellent, the capture time is not too bad at all. The digital video quality is good, as is the sound quality for the videos. I LOVE the adjustable LCD display; it is nice to be able to change the perspective of the photo without having to lay on the ground or climb up on something to peer through a viewvinder. In all honesty, this will probably be the feature that I miss the most when I upgrade to the Canon 20D.
So, all said, I would still recommend this camera to someone who wants a versitile camera that takes high quality images and offers many user-friendly features including the ability to take video. I would just be sure to tell them that the AF will not be great.
What do you want in a camera? Versatility? This is it! Great image quality? Yes again! Digital video? Yes!! Responsive AF that is quick enough to capture the kids before they run past you? Sorry, it will take practice and a little luck. The choice is up to you!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
