The good: Attractive and well-designed; capable of producing very nice photos; complete set of manual controls; solid 720p video.
The bad: On the slow side, with subpar battery life; no low-compression JPEG option.
The bottom line: Though we'd like it to perform better, dSLR shooters looking for a sidekick camera will find the Canon PowerShot S95's top-flight photos and a full manual feature set worth the tradeoff of its compact size.

Handy and Easy
by towlesc on March 28, 2011
Pros: Great photos, many features, helps you improve your photos by providing data on the setting used. Minature video setting is fun. Even the software is fun to use.
Cons: Could use 30FPS HD video.
Summary: If you want to have more control over your photos and don't want to carry a DSLR, this is a great camera.

Best P&S I've seen.
by techielover365 on March 26, 2011
Pros: Fits easily in pants pocket.
Perfect for traveling.
Picture quality is stunning.
Plenty of options for someone with some knowledge of shooting modes.
Can control aperture and shutter at the same time, with ease.Cons: Flash button in suboptimal location. (Why have a popup flash? Embed the thing!)

Summary: I spent months researching the best compact but semi-SLR cameras I could buy and was extremely satisfied with this camera. I bought the camera before a trip to Brazil, with the plan to take some photos, and produce poster-sized prints for my apartment. WOW this camera fit the bill perfectly.
Packing my two bags to trudge through the rainforests and to plan for the rainy season, this camera was perfect. It fit nicely in my bag, and easily in a ziploc when necessary. An SLR would have made my travels MISERABLE, and probably end up broken or waterlogged.
Shutter and aperture controls simultaneously made many tricky shooting situations very easy. Fumbling with a complicated SLR would have made me miss many moments. Using 'auto' on a low-end P&S would have made the pics come out poor. Many of my photos rivaled my friend's $2000 Nikon SLR and I could get the job done in an instant while he fumbled away.
Color management on the camera made the gloomy days look great, and the lush countryside really POP, and the beaches looked amazing.
Many of the photos were printed on posters and I framed them in my apartment, and they looked great! The big sensor on this camera minimizes the noise and the low-light capability is probably best in it's class. You really get what you pay for in a camera, and I plan on keeping this one for years to come. Soon, I'm going to play with the RAW files with some post-processing programs and see what else I can come up with.
I consider this a great option for someone who is no longer an amature and is transitioning into more advanced photography, yet still wanting ease-of-use or an advanced photographer wanting a second camera for easier use, portability, etc. -
Great Camer
by txguyaustin on February 28, 2011
Pros: Amazing low light capability, i have totally amazed many people when i've taking pictures with no flash.
Cons: I've not found any cons yet
Summary: Great camera, i would definitely recommend for either a novice user or as a carry for when the DSLR is just a little too big.

Briliant little camera you'll want with you.
by paul8632 on February 15, 2011
Pros: Compact size, ease of use; quality images; fast lens on wide end, control ring on front of camera, good looks, light weight, good LCD screen, ability to shoot RAW,
Cons: Slow aperture at telephoto end, could use a better gripping surface, would LOVE a 24mm wide option!, no viewfinder.
Summary: I owned a G9 and liked it, but found it a bit heavy/bulky for some uses. The S95 is small enough and light enough to always have with you. ...
Summary: I owned a G9 and liked it, but found it a bit heavy/bulky for some uses. The S95 is small enough and light enough to always have with you. The image quality is excellent for this size of camera and competes well with the 'G Series' cameras, which are pretty much the very best in their class. Fun to use, but has a feeling of quality and is a true 'mini-pro' camera in so many respects. Haven't used the video, but good to know it's there and is of decent quality now (over the S90). Home run Canon!

Amazing Camera for a sub-compact
by TonyHFakhari on January 8, 2011
Pros: low light lens. Very quick point and shoot. Its perfect for traveling.
Cons: I wanted 1080P video but after realizing the product that I have, movies are not really the main point of wanting this camera.
Summary: Best bang for your buck. It looks like a $250 camera. Its costs about $400. It performs like a $1000 DSLR. Excellent buy!!

Amazing P&S
by buff1e on January 4, 2011
Pros: picture quality is fabulous.
slightly brighter on many photos than i would like, but that's the beauty of manual!
people are amazed at the quality of pics that can be taken. the lens dynamics are amazing.Cons: some of the ergos on the camera, and like many have said, battery life is average-slightly poor, but i always have a charged backup anyhow!

Image Quality is several steps above the Point & Shoots
by FoToEdge on December 19, 2010
Pros: I love the lens ring which is used as a aperture control in A mode and a zoom focus ring in Art Filter Mode. I enjoy the Miniature Feature the most of all the filters. The colors are rich and the noise is not bad for the size of the sensor.
Cons: I would like Auto Bracketing available in all Modes. I would love this camera if it had a wide 24mm equiv on the zoom lens. A thin neck strap would be a big help. The price was a bit high.

Good choice for the wannabe enthusiast
by pyroane on December 8, 2010
Pros: High quality pics even in low light. Solid construction. Ease of use. Versatility--ranges from full manual mode to complete dummy mode.
Cons: I like AA batteries. The battery life on this Canon is only so-so.

Summary: I bought this as the next step up from a simple, $130 point and shoot, and man, is it a step up. It takes great pics in the full auto mode. I'm nowhere near knowledgable enough to take advatage of all this camera has to offer, but I look forward to learning. I wanted a camera I could grow into rather than one I'd quickly grow out of, and this seems to be it.
