The good: Great image quality; minimal shutter lag; speedy performance; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder.
The bad: No manual exposure controls; slow flash recycle time.
The bottom line: Canon's SD1100 IS adds optical image stabilization to last year's hit SD1000, while delivering just as impressive image quality.
Great camera for an on-the-go person!

Summary: Digital cameras all have different features, advantages, and drawbacks. When I looked for a camera, I wanted good picture quality. I also wanted my camera to be small enough to easily carry. As a college student, I wanted a camera that wouldn?t be a hassle to use. I found these qualities in the Canon SD 1100is Digital Elph.
The small size of the camera makes it easy to take anywhere without being burdened by a huge camera bag. I can put the camera in my backpack so I can have it when walking around campus, for in-class demonstrations, or whenever a picture moment arises. Although the camera is small, the screen on the back is still large enough for pictures to be easily viewed.
This camera takes decent pictures. The 8.0 megapixel pictures have a good enough resolution to show detail in enlargements without becoming blurry. When the 3x optical zoom is not enough, the high resolution also allows for the use of the digital zoom without diminishing picture quality too much. However, I would not recommend this camera to photographers to use in their professional work. The manual features are limited; there is no manual focus option.
The camera takes great action shots, making it perfect for an on-the-go person. Crazy times in a dorm room can be captured to remember and laugh over later. It also takes great pictures of scenery. I have used it to take pictures of the autumn leaves, and the color in the picture is as vivid as the leaves.
Another advantage is the wrist strap. It has a sliding toggle that slides along the strap to fit around your wrist, lessening the chances of dropping the camera. However, I have managed to drop this camera on a cement floor when I wasn?t wearing the wrist strap. Although the bottom of the screen cracked, most of the screen and the rest of the camera continues to work.
The battery on the camera lasts quite a while without recharging. It shows a full charge for most of the battery life. When it shows only two of three bars of power, however, it will run out of power faster than it used up the first bar. The rechargeable battery that comes with the camera ends the need to buy batteries for the camera, as well as the need to haul around extra sets of batteries in case those in the camera die.
Overall, this camera takes great pictures and is easy to bring anywhere. I would whole-heartedly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take pictures to capture memories, but not to the serious photographer for use in the studio.

I love my Canon camera!!
by mjt95 on February 23, 2011
Pros: It is easy to use, has lots of cool modes and is super easy to carry around.
Cons: It doesn't shoot well in poor lighting.

My camera is durable, anyone can use it, and the osftware is simple to set up. <3
Excellent photo quality in good lighting
by robkellyabramsoncom on February 7, 2011
Pros: small and easy to use. Colors are great. Depth of focus is good in good light.
Cons: This camera only lasts about 2 years because the open/close function of the lense gets clogged. I keep mine in my pocket. This might be avoided if you keep yours in a case. DO NOT TAKE TO THE BEACH. Sand will quickly ruin this camera.
Summary: Great camera for good price though It seems like the cost has gone up over the last 2 years and it is difficult to find out the next good and ...

Color quality great. Service repair with dealer is excellent (they actually answer the phone).

Great quality but very grainy no matter what lighting
by SethiXzon on December 26, 2010
Pros: Great quality camera
Light and will fit in your pocket
Very, very long battery life
Lasted me a very long time
Cons: Grain is horrible indoors, and even outdoors in the afternoon there still is much of it visible
Although I recieved mine free at an unknown price, it is not worth 268 dollars.
Summary: I recently (as in today) replaced this camera with a Nikon Coolpix S4000, which was actually cheaper (I would imagine this is more expensive because of stocking issues as it ...
Summary: I recently (as in today) replaced this camera with a Nikon Coolpix S4000, which was actually cheaper (I would imagine this is more expensive because of stocking issues as it is two years old) and that was simply due to the grain. While it's no problem for normal users that this was made for, it's a huge problem for video editors; it ruins stock footage and the like. However, it's ultra durable and I've banged, smashed and even thrown in the air it a few times and it never broke. The lens even got stuck and we fixed that; although it eventually just got stuck for good and we had to use another one.
Features + Quality = Excellent camera
by happygillmore1927 on May 31, 2009
Pros: The Canon SD1100 IS is an awesome upgrade the previous model. The image stabilization (hence the "IS") is a needed improvement to Canon's line of ELPH cameras. The features on this camera also make up for any lack of quality you might find in photos.
Cons: Sometimes when taking a night shot, the "blur" warning shows up, even when on a tri-pod.
The best compact camera I have owned.
by cshueh on February 18, 2009
Pros: The pictures come out crystal clear. My old camera was a Olympus and I dd not realize what I was missing out until I purchased my SD1000IS. The quality are like night and day.
The video feature is awesome. It replaced my old video camera.
Cons: The only con I can think of is that it is easy to lose since it is so small.

Great take along camera for just about every occasion.
by Jim Buerk on February 11, 2009
Pros: Small, solid feel makes it easy to take along. Consistent color and picture quality. Easy to use, with lots of picture modes that really work well. Creative modes let you alter pictures without a computer. Display works in portrait and landscape.
Cons: A little slow when using the flash.

Summary: I am very happy with this camera. I take it everywhere. It is an ideal point and shoot camera. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a camera handy for snapshots. The results are impressive. Start up time is fast. I've been able to quickly take pictures using the fully automatic mode, without missing the shot. The party mode worked great to capture streamers in mid air at a birthday party. The kids and pets setting allowed me to get clear, sharp pictures of the cat and dog playing.
Awesome camera!! I dont regret it

Pros: Great clarity, good quality, flash is good, easy to use, awesome colors
Cons: Wierd approach to the shutter, battery life is okay, image stability at times

Summary: This is my replacement camera and so far i love it. The pictures are even more clear compared to my last camera, and the choice of colors just added to its amazing-ness. The shutter is a bit of a pain cause you have to hit it like you're double clicking a mouse to actually get it to take a picture at that moment. You also cant take quick candids of yourself (myspace type portraits), the stability isnt nearly as stable as you need it to be for those types of pictures. Other than that its a great camera, and I definitely reccomend it to anyone who's thinking of getting one.
You'll Like It.
by thomasleaton on July 26, 2008
Pros: Solid, small, easy to navigate and very sturdy. It is for casual photography but, boy, it does that well!
Cons: The "blue" metal. I think I would prefer the old silver.

Summary: This is a great choice for the vast majority of us. Snapshots come out really good even for the brainless. If you want to tweak the settings once in awhile, it isn't too confusing to figure out. The manual is very specific when you want the nitty-gritty of all the things that are at your fingertips. There really are more options and settings than most folks will ever utilize. But they are there for when you feel creative. Buy one without hesitation.
