Edit URL
The Canon has FAR superior low light performance, image stabilization works well, great compact size, nice big LCD relative to the size of the camera, and easy intuitive controls (although tiny buttons, if you have big fingers, they're a touch too small in my opinion).
To compare, I took similar shots with both cameras, one outside in full sun, the other inside in low light with the flash on. I left both cameras in full auto mode. On both shots, the Canon outperforms the older camera (with 5 years of improved technology, I expected nothing less). The low light flash shot was dramatically better on the Canon (and taking a low light shot without the flash was even more extreme).
The outdoor shot, although the Canon was better, it wasn't a whole lot better. To be honest, for 14 megapixels I was expecting a little more fine detail/sharpness in the image. Shame on me for thinking a higher resolution sensor would really make that much difference -- when examining fine details, it's really all about optics, and no point and shoot lens is going to measure up to my expectations (I used to do a lot of SLR photography with pro level lenses).
So don't expect anything remotely resembling SLR quality results; remember you're buying a point and shoot. You won't be making any 11x17 prints to proudly hang on the wall. But the portability of this camera is fantastic; you can easily drop it in a pocket and have it ready when the moment strikes, and the results will look great in a scrapbook or family photo album. And when I started a family I stopped lugging around an SLR and camera bag... the diaper bag is plenty.

Great camera a bit of a let down for some, but not me.
by cosmosjoshys on July 26, 2010
Pros: Small size, materials, large screen, easy to use, and of course...good pictures
Cons: Does this take the best pictures? No, Is that why someone buys this? No. It is an excellent camera though for its size.
Summary: A convenient compact camera that won't let you down...unless you need a perfect shot every time....ironic?! One problem I keep finding myself in is when I need ...
Summary: A convenient compact camera that won't let you down...unless you need a perfect shot every time....ironic?! One problem I keep finding myself in is when I need to turn on the continuous shot setting. Its very slow compared to a lot of other cameras.
After all these people complaining about low light photos, I had to take some low light pics to see what the fuss was about...I'm not having these problems at all. My low light photos are turning out just fine.

I love this camera! I bought it for non-tech wife.
by PhotoAm2011 on January 1, 2011
Pros: Very simple to use and beautiful images. Simple to use, pocket-sized point and shoot camera. Insert the battery and SD card, turn it on, and set it to auto with a slider switch. Small enough to fit in a small pocketbook. Takes good video.
Cons: Usual slow auto-focus. Pre-focusing speeds up considerably. Only shoots jpeg, no raw. Hinges on doors for battery/flash card compartment and video cables flimsy. Cable door sticks at 1/3. Checked store model and it was same. Only 4X optical zoom.
Summary: My wife is technology adverse. This camera exceeds her expectations for simplicity and quality. A few elegant controls are on the body so there is little to learn. Only controls ...
Summary: My wife is technology adverse. This camera exceeds her expectations for simplicity and quality. A few elegant controls are on the body so there is little to learn. Only controls she needed to learn were on/off, display/view, zoom, and shutter buttons. Truly point and shoot. I did have to set up date/time and initial configuration. This was easy to do through a fairly straightforward menu system.
Image quality exceeded my expectations. I am an amateur DSLR photographer who understands camera physics, digital file formats/limitations, and image processing technology. I am surprised at the quality of the images. Over the Holidays we have shot outdoors (sunny and cloudy), indoors at home, and at two large museums. I took pictures of the kids jumping and captured them in mid-air by pre-focusing and timing the shutter release.
Program AE has a good selection of program modes, ISO can be selected, white balance, etc. But with the Auto as good as it is -- why bother?
I used the movie mode at Christmas dinner and was very pleased with the quality and sound. I also used the movie mode outdoors at a changing of the guard ceremony and again was pleased. Good image stabilization, sound, and image quality. This shoots video as .mov files. If you want to convert to mpeg, you will need additional software.
Overall - this camera exceeds expectations for something so small and relatively inexpensive. It was on sale for $150 and I had a store coupon for 10% discount.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

A strong addition to the team.
by PhotoFreak10 on March 29, 2010
Pros: very slim sleek camera, smaller then most but packs a good punch for its size. Very smart and very respectable in low light situations. With a modest shutter lag and smart auto.
Cons: One thing I loved about canon's line up LAST YEAR, is they were the ONLY major company that still offered a view finder on their compact models. This year that under rated feature has gone by the way side and no longer exists in the 2010 line up.

Summary: For the last two years Canon has really impressed me with their point and shoot line up. The SD1400 is no exception, this is a moderate improvement on an already good sub compact the SD780. The 1400 features canon's Dig IV processor which, in my opinion, is one of the best and brightest on the market today. This is a smart camera, with some nice features; Such as the ability to zoom while taking HD Video, color accenting, color swapping, and a pretty quality lens and sensor considering the camera's size. With its modest price tag of 249ish I feel its one of the best little point and shoots your going to find for that price bracket. If your looking for a compact no hassle, quality image camera, look no farther it has arrived.

A Pretty Good Camera
by PCgoneMac on July 9, 2010
Pros: -Nice compact design
-On average, pretty good photos
-Very nice display
-On-board image and video editing executed well.
-Excellent photos in good lighting
-Good flash
-In good lighting, the 720P video capture is excellent and very smooth.Cons: -When on programable mode the picture is almost always blurry if flash is off
-Horrible low-light photos
-Unreliable Auto Mode
-On-board video editing limited to trimming time
-Pretty limited customization of Programable Mode.Summary: I love the design and portability of this camera. I love being able to slip it into a pocket with ease. I am usually satisfied with pictures, however the camera ...
Summary: I love the design and portability of this camera. I love being able to slip it into a pocket with ease. I am usually satisfied with pictures, however the camera can be very unreliable, and the low-light pictures are terrible. When the lighting conditions are right the 720P video rivals the quality of my Flip Mino HD. This camera wasn't the cheapest, but overall I like it. Though it may fail you at times, this camera is good overall.

OMG - one year, thats all this thing lasted.
by johnnypuke123 on July 4, 2011
Pros: So SAD, after reading awsome reviews, this camera just is not tough enough for regular users. Old maids, wimps, and tea-toters enjoy, but if you plan to use this thing for a vacation, or wedding - FORGET IT! What a dismal failure.
Cons: While the atractivly small size and minimalist frame are attractive, there is no staying power for my use. Good quality in the pictures, bad design of the lens cover, and barrel. Dont waste your money. Try something with a real cover or sturdy design.
Summary: Good for a disposible camrea if spending 159+ is disposable. Works for a while, then gets cranky first, then stops all togather after about a year of not heavy use. ...
Summary: Good for a disposible camrea if spending 159+ is disposable. Works for a while, then gets cranky first, then stops all togather after about a year of not heavy use. Keep this thing away from kids, chocolate, sand, wind, crowds, mist, sunlight, flowers, dander, mites, and anything else that is in normal world enviroments. Suggested use, Biosphere II, a controlled enviroment with no chance of accidents.

Summary: I bought this camera a month ago while I was home on leave from Iraq and when I got back to Iraq I got some great pictures and videos out of this camera for the month it worked. Other than being totally bummed my new camera doesnt work and I cant take more pictures of my deployment this camera isnt horrible. Just make sure if for some reason you buy this camera, baby it. keep it safe from getting bumped or and kind of dust, the retracable lens is very very easy to break. I hope this review helped out. have a great day
