Product brief
Intro: The Canon PowerShot SD30 is a 5-megapixel, ultra-compact camera.Compared to other ultra-compact digital cameras on the market, it is expensive at around $375.
Noteworthy Features: Weighing only 3.3 ounces without battery or media, this digital camera is very light for a compact camera.
Weaker Features: Has only a 2.4x optical zoom, which is less favorable than some similarly priced digital cameras. For example, the Konica Minolta Dimage G400, a 4-megapixel digital camera at around $350, has a 3x optical zoom. Also, this digital camera has 5-megapixel resolution, which is somewhat lower than some similarly priced digital cameras.
Suitability: Made for capturing everyday surprises, since it easily slips into your pocket or purse.A recommended use, based on key features, is framed photos for the home. The largest recommended print size, estimated from the camera's resolution, is 10x14.
Value: In general, this digital camera's price seems a bit steep, with respect to its features. For example, when it comes to resolution, the average price of ultra-compact cameras with comparable resolution is quite a bit less, around $265.

Easy to operate, perfect as backup
by Zeuser on January 17, 2007
Pros: Size, Image and functions
Cons: A tad slow, weak flash
Summary: Keep in mind that my primary camera is a Nikon D200 so I consider the SD30 as my backup camera.

I don't like shooting through the LCD screen but hey... it's not a DSLR so I can live with it.
Boot up is actually reasonably fast. But taking the shot is too slow. You press the button and it takes about 1/2 sec. to mesure, focus and snap. Woah! Way too slow.
I love the size and that's the primary reason I bought it. I can just shove it in my pocket and I use it as a backup or when I'm not carrying my really big and heavy D200.
The flash is a bit weak though.
