Canon PowerShot SD750 (black) price range: $499.98

The good: Nicely designed; excellent high-ISO photo quality; relatively fast; above-average movie quality; face detection.
The bad: Photos tend to have purple fringing; no optical viewfinder.
The bottom line: The Canon PowerShot SD750 has an attractive design, large LCD, and excellent photo quality for an ultracompact.
Sandwiched between similar 7-megapixel siblings--the PowerShot SD800 IS on one side and the PowerShot SD1000 on the other--the Canon PowerShot SD750 nevertheless manages to distinguish itself as a well-designed, practical option for snapshooters who favor big LCDs over optical viewfinders.
The 5.3-ounce SD750 doesn't quite match the SD1000 for compactness, but its 3.6x2.2x0.8 inch body will fit just as comfortably in a pants pocket. It comes in silver and silver with black accents, the latter design recalling the early film Elphs. The Touch Dial Control--so named for its optional ability to display a virtual dial when you simply touch the control--quickly accesses the small set of shooting options, including ISO speed, flash mode, macro/infinite focus, and continuous/timer. Though it doesn't offer manual or semi-manual exposure modes, it does supply a host of color enhancements and scene modes, exposure compensation, and a choice of three metering modes.
For focus, Canon provides a face-detection AF mode, which automatically locates a face (just one) and determines focus and metering for it. That's in addition to the company's standard AiAF automatic focus-point selector and center focus. The face-detect AF works reasonably well, but the option is buried within the menus and only works in conjunction with the AiAF; that is, if it doesn't find a face, it falls back on AiAF. I generally don't like the automatic focus selection on any camera--they never seem to find the desired subject, just the closest. So I don't like the face-detection option stuck in a set-it-and-forget-it location. You may feel otherwise.
Overall, however, I find the SD750's layout intelligent and comfortable to use. It has a big 3-inch LCD for framing and playback. The LCD appears bright and easy to see, even in direct sunlight, although it also tends to look a bit coarse.
Photo and movie quality rank high for an ultracompact. In fact, despite almost identical innards with the SD1000--they both use the same sensor, f /2.8-4.9 35mm-105mm (35mm equivalent) 3X zoom lens, and Digic III processor--the photos from the SD750 look a bit better, especially vis-a-vis high ISO noise. As measured by CNET Labs' tests and in photo samples, the SD750's noise profile generally outperformed both the SD1000 and the SD800 IS. With the exception of photos shot under our extremely warm tungsten lights, white balance, exposure, and saturation look very good. Movies look equally good, in part because Canon captures in MJPEG, which uses far less compression than other cameras' MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 formats. As a result, a 30fps 640x480 movie uses about 2MB per second of storage.
On the other hand, the SD750's performance matched that of the SD1000. It takes 1.0 second from start to shoot, with subsequent photos about 1.6 seconds apart without flash and 2.3 seconds with the flash enabled. Shutter lag measures 0.5 second in our high-contrast test, which mimics bright shooting conditions, and 0.9 second in our low-contrast test, which mimics dim shooting conditions. Continuous shooting was the only disappointment--approximately 1.6 frames per second regardless of image size.
It lacks the image stabilization of the SD800 IS and the tiny appeal of the SD1000, but the Canon PowerShot SD750 has a more elegant, cutting-edge design, large LCD and--to my eyes, at least--better photo quality.

Summary: I have a Nikon D80 with several lenses. I can't call me a professional photographer but I know a lot about photography. I decide to buy a compact digital camera since at many of the last concerts I was unable to get in the professional camera. I try other cameras from Sony and Fujifilm. Overall, Canon create nices pictures at different configurations (day, night, indoor, outdoor, moving things, etc). I'm really happy with this camera and the feature it bring.
So I have the best of two world, a professional camera for professional works and a nice compact camera with really nice quality photos.11 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

An ultra-compact camera with a brilliant 3 inch screen and superb build quality.

Pros: Large wide viewing angle screen, very thin and compact, good quality pictures
Cons: Auto-focus does not work during a movie, no battery indicator on the screen.

Summary: I have owned this camera for a bit over a week and have explored most of its features. It is my third ultra-compact digital camera and overall I am pleased with it.
In most respects I am VERY pleased with it, but one aspect which is very disappointing to me is that auto focus is disabled in movie mode!
I know that many ultra-compacts disable ZOOM in movie mode, (to cut out noise pick-up) but to disable FOCUS as well is very bad and is a real issue for me because I have a need to take close up videos.
In Movie Mode the camera focus's the first frame only so if you change the subject distance after that then you will get a blurry movie.
I use the camera in Manual mode all the time because in Auto mode too many things are disabled. For instance you can't have forced (fill-in) flash, you can't trim the exposure, you can't select a particular ISO value etc.
The auto white balance works well and is the best I have seen, so that is one parameter that doesn't usually need to be fiddled with.
I like the fact that Canon now provide on-screen information about the f-number, ISO, and shutter speed.(This information comes up when the shutter button is half pressed).
I also like it that you can have the camera create automatic FOLDERS for you. I set it to create a new folder each month.
The Face Detect focus mode usually works but doesn't really do anything useful; I leave it turned off.
For awhile I couldn't work out why my flash pictures were quite blurry until I realised that "slow synchro" was turned ON. Leave this OFF unless you are shooting in a fairly darkened situation.
Overall the camera is a joy to use and takes very nice pictures. I wanted an ultra-compact with a big screen and this camera certainly fits the bill and has the renowned Canon build-quality as well.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cons: No optical view finder (not a big deal thats old now anyway), No battery bars but warns you when battery is low.

I love this camera ever since i saw it on the internet I tried to find the best deal i could. The performance of this camera overhauls that of my old 4.1MP toshiba camera that randomly stopped working.
The canon sd750 black design is very nicely done, it still has its subtle lines while the 3"LCD screen provides the outstanding picture quality and its major bling factor! Sometimes I think the picture quality on this LCD is better than that of my PC's LCD screen. =P the shutter speed and loading times are ridiculously fast. i can take pic after pic (without flash) without the camera hesitating to take a break and load the pictures into the sdcard. Keep in mind i have an old 128mb sd card that has normal loading speeds. So you can imagine a faster and newer sd cards will do even faster shoot and save speeds. There are plenty of settings to play around with and battery life is very long.
definite key features are as listed.
There were only a couple things i didnt like:
1. there is no battery bar meter
- It does warn you when its getting low but i recommend getting a spare battery or just to charge the battery before you go.
The nice thing about the Li-ion battery is that you dont have to wait to fully discharge just to recharge the battery because the battery has no memory, meaning charge and charge away and your battery will still last a while.
2. I took some night pics and it didnt come out as clear (without flash) there were some white dots all over. but then again that was only at iso800 and at fine setting. I could have increased it to iso1600 and superfine setting. Also even at night i can still see what I am taking a picture of. Whereas my old camera and others I have tested, at night the canon is still better for its price. Again this is no flash, with flash the pics are phenomenal at night. And if you are a night person you can purchase an external flash that flashes up to 30 feet.
Overall: I am very happy with my camera. Lots of features for the price. check out this camera in person to test it out yourself, it is a phenomenal camera that words cant describe well. Also if you want better pics go to canon usa online and you can see better pics of how this camera looks like. Honestly when i first saw these pics on cnet i almost didnt get it. When i checked canons' site and saw it person to confirm, the camera just made me drool all the way home. =P2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Paid over $300 for this camera for my daughter. A year later, as soon as the warrant expired, camera that had very limited use started taking purple photos. 9 out of 10 photos are purple. Called Canon... rep advised to send it in for repair $110. What a lemon! I own a Kodak V705 which is getting constant use - no problems at all. I am not buying another Canon.

Summary: My overall opinion of the camera is it is easy to use. Has a little difficulty in bright lights and dark. The camera is easy to use and I enjoy the slender feel of the camera. Based on previous reviews I'm taking very close attention not to bang or drop this or do anything to hit the lens. Picture quality is very nice. I paid $150.00 for this and for the price it's very nice . One quality I dislike in all Cannon cameras and have no idea why this is so is there is no means to charge the camera using an external power supply like a wall socket or car lighter. That means each time you battery runs down, you need recharge the battery and also put a lot more wear and tear on the camera door and pins the batteries use in the camera.
There is camera that photographs better in the dark/brightness with the same size screen, and can recharge using a wall socket/Car lighter. But that costs about $80.00. If I had that money or discovered it prior to my purchase, I may have bought that because I'm a little lazy. But I'm enjoying this one very much. For the price, I don't believe I could have purchased a better camera. This works great on my Mac-both photos and small movies. If Cannon had a charging system from the wall outlet, I would give it a 9.5. If it worked better in bright / dark light, It would go to a 10. Would like to see a manual mode for the lens where I don't have to rely on the motor if something ever goes wrong with it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excelente!!!

Summary: My wife has a film SLR camera, but wanted a digital. Well digitals cost atleast $600 for a SLR and we wanted something we could put in our pocket and take anywhere. After using her dad's 650, we decied we liked it and would get one. The 650 no loger is available, so we picked up the 750 and we love it. The picture quality is excellent, obviously not as good as a SLR, but very good none the less. My wife is very picky about her pictures and she loves this camera. The small size makes this camera great for travel or just taking it everywhere you go just in case you have a "kodak moment". The only draw backs are the limited zoom (but what do you expect with a pocket size camera), the fact that in dim lit areas, the pictures come out very dark and have some noise in them and if an object is moving the pictures will more than likely come out blurry. Other than that we love this camera and would recommend it to anyone. It has a lot of features for such a small camera and takes excellent pictures, well worth the money.

well i went out and got that beautiful sd 750 in black and what a whopper.. im so happy that i bought it. dude this thing has phenomenal pics even with the flash on i get great pics.. movies are awesome and to show it to people i get it on its great screen.almost compensated for not showin it on a computer with its gorgeous screen and obvious portability. this camera with its artistic colors surely is one the best macines that a gadget man could ever want to have.. i bought an extra battery with it, for 20 dollars, 2 cases, a tamron for tame evenings and a kata ultra protable case which resembles a grenade, for when im out on rugged adventures. dude i dont even need a video camera anymore. i bought a 4gb sdhc card and that baby rocks.. plus i have some fast 2 gigs lying around that are enough for an hours worth of video in high quality. phoah.nice one.
screen beats the hell out of any camera out there currently.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I just got this camera last week and Iam in love with it. I love the big LCD screen and the picture quality. Before this I had the Kodak v530. A month after I bought it I had problems with it. The lense would get stuck sometimes and would be a pain to open up. I sent it in 2 months after I bought it. The SD750 is so much nicer. It "feels" like it will last longer and looks like it too. I would say that the flash may be too bright sometimes. When I use it indoors and its bright enough inside, I turn the flash off becuase it wont pick up background images that well. One thing I have never understood about Canon is why they dont use battery indicators. I assume that they want you to buy an extra battery? But then again how hard is it to charge your battery every now and then after ever few uses. Overall I love this camera. I hope that the customer service and warrenty is better than that of Kodak, hope I dont have to find out first hand though.
