The good: The Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 10-megapixel camera has solid image quality, a very fast low-resolution Burst mode, and simple controls.

At nearly an inch thick and weighing 5.4 ounces, the Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 isn't quite the slimmest member of the Casio Exilim series of digital cameras. It is, however, one of the simplest. Unlike most other Exilims, the EX-Z1050 lacks both mode dial and switch, and holds only a few buttons on its back panel. This simple design betrays the camera's simple feature set. The 10-megapixel EX-Z1050 uses a standard 38mm-to-114mm equivalent 3x zoom lens. Like all Exilims, the EX-Z1050 features Casio's antishake DSP digital-image stabilization and Best Shot scene preset modes. The EX-Z1050 also uses the same control sidebar first seen in the well-received Casio Exilim EX-S770. The sidebar works well with the EX-Z1050's simple design, making almost all commonly used image settings available with a few taps of the direction pad.

The EX-Z1050 sports a 2.6-inch, 115,000-pixel LCD screen. That's a far cry from the 230,000-pixel screens found on a lot of cameras these days. The low resolution makes virtually everything you see through it look soft and grainy. Since the camera doesn't have a viewfinder, you're forced to deal with the disappointing LCD whenever you use it. This makes framing shots difficult, as the coarse, blurry display doesn't clearly show whether the camera has accurately focused.

Despite the bad display, the EX-Z1050 actually shoots pretty well. It performed admirably in our lab tests, with solid shooting speeds and strangely bittersweet Burst mode speeds. After taking 1.4 seconds to start up and capture its first image, the camera snapped shots every 1.9 seconds. With the flash enabled, that time increased to a still-tolerable 2.4 seconds. The EX-Z1050's shutter lagged only 0.5 second in bright light and 1.1 seconds in low light. At full resolution, the camera's burst mode took 0.9 shot per second--respectable for a 10-megapixel camera.

The camera's photos generally look very nice. Colors appear neutral, and pictures stay relatively free of artifacts, save for some purple fringing on the edges of some lighter objects. The photos displayed little noise up to ISO 400, and even at ISO 800 noise remained a fine, fairly unobtrusive fuzz.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 proves how just one flaw can almost ruin an otherwise fine camera. While it takes nice photos and works well, the blurry screen makes framing the simplest shots difficult. For a larger, much more legible screen with the same solid features and small size, consider instead the lower-resolution EX-S770. Another nice choice in this price range is Canon's PowerShot SD1000.

Casio EX-Z1050 beats Canon SD850 IS - for me

Summary: My spouse & I own both the Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 and Canon SD850 IS between us. If I were to choose one again - I'd choose the Casio Exilim. Here's why: 1) Casio Exilim has simply amazing battery life - rated at 370 shots, best in all comparisons by long shot - I get 500+ shots. How do they do it?! Canon's has 1/2 to 2/3 the life. 2) Casio 10MPx, Canon 8Mpx! 3) Casio Exilim price is $100 less!!, for example at Amazon.com. Big savings! 3) Bigger, brighter 2.7" viewing screen on Casio, possibly not quite as sharp as Canon's, however, the difference in minimal and not a factor. (The view-finder on the Canon is useless). 4) Casio has many more excellent Best Shot settings that are very easy to use and really work great, which results in... 5) better balanced color & saturation in photos overall to me. 6) Casio "Auto tracking AF" & Canon "Face Detection" are very similar, but Canon tracks better 7) Blur/Shake reduction are comparable. 8) Casio has 3x Zoom, Canon wins: 4x zoom. 9) Casio video mode superior, MPEG4 format. 10) The Casio Exilim is FAST, 1 second between shots, but a tiny bit slower than the Canon - about 1/10 second in ratings. This is a non-issue. (Casio's burst rate is about 5 shots per second.) 11) Casio's computer software is dreadful, but who uses it anyway? Use Adobe. Canon's is better but still just OK. BOTTOM LINE: Buy the Casio Exilim: Save $100, get more pixels to crop, better internal photo modes for better pix, very good anti-shake mode, and don't forget that unmatched long-life battery!!! - This is THE most under-rated camera on the market.

Sometimes if there are a lot of people in the photo or if your are inside it gets confused but besides that it is great. There is a button for bestshot where you can select what you are going to shoot such as outside inside low light ebay mode or whatever and it helps you take a better picture. I was leery of not being able to use regular batteries. I bought an extra battery and they last a very long time. Overall I would reccommend this camera.

Summary: A very nice camera. The Exilim is pretty compact and fits in a pocket nicely, even in its carrying case. It is fast to turn on and take its first shot. It is pretty easy to use and doesn't take much to figure out how to use the different options. It has a pretty nice zoom. Battery lasts a pretty good amount of time.

Image stabilization could be better. It doesn't take much to get a blurry picture from movement. If you have shaky hands, this camera probably isn't for you. That is really my only complaint.

It is a well priced, small camera that takes some pretty amazing pictures. Besides some blurry pictures here and there, it does a great job. That is why you try to take more than one picture of your target.

Summary: I'm stunned at the abysmal review given by CNET. This camera has yet to fail me when needed. It's taken wonderful shots of both objects and people with absolutely minimal to no blur. The majority of images come out clear and sharp, while a small portion come out less than amazing. This camera is point and shoot; any idiot with an index finger can take an amazing photograph with it. I've taken a photo of my water faucet, and it captured every single drop perfectly, with absolutely no blur. And my cat, who can't ever seem to sit still, a few tries, and I got a picture of her showing every fur on her face in the greatest detail. This camera is amazing, and if I can post links to photos taken with this camera in this post, without the links getting censored, I will. This camera has out-performed a 12 MP Samsung TechWin VLUU NV20. CNET has done a terrible job at reviewing this product, and failed to recognize the everyday person, and advanced photographer alike, when writing this review.

Summary: The third time I went to use the camera I had charged the battery before I left on a trip and went to use the camera and it didn't work. So I put the battery back in the charger. Next morning went to use the camera and it didn't work. I sent the charger and battery back to Casio. A week or so later I got the battery and charger back. No information as to the resolution of the problem was included in the box. I put the battery in the charger. The next morning same problem. No green light on the charger and the camera does not work. Called Casio again. Now I have to send EVERYTHING back to them. I'll give them a second chance to fix it. If I have a problem again I'm returning the camera.

Fast Camera, Poor Indoor Images

Pros: This camera has a very fast reaction time; probably the best I've seen in a Point and Shoot camera. It takes good outdoor shots as long as there is full sun. It's small and compact; very easy to use

Not being able to fully see the images on the screen (terrible LCD), I didn't realize the images were so poor until I took a bunch of shots and then viewed them on my computer. This camera is fine if you're looking for something compact that reacts quickly and are willing to sacrifice on image quality. Otherwise stay clear of this one. It doesn't matter if it has 10 Megapixels if the image is poor. I had mine for two days and returned it. Image wise, it was only slightly better than my 1.3 Megapixel camera phone.
