The good: The Canon Digital Rebel XT's image quality leads its class; competitive price; ultrafast start-up time; very responsive.
The bad: The Canon Rebel XT's lightweight plastic body isn't ergonomically satisfying; no spot meter; limited continuous-shooting mode, unimpressive kit lens; 1.6X lens-conversion factor.
The bottom line: The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is an exceptionally small and lightweight camera designed for amateur digital SLR photographers, but it delivers the responsiveness and image quality you'd expect from a semipro model.

Excellent for Beginners and Amateurs
by aptos2005 on March 26, 2005
Pros: Picture Quality Similar to 20D, Price, Speed, Custom Settings, Better White Balance, and Weight (17.1oz vs. 24.2oz)
Cons: No spot meter, $100 EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6 that is included in kit, Menu and Layout (Quick Control Dial) is different from 20D and other high end EOS Cameras.

Summary: I started shopping for a Digital SLR when my first son turned six months old. Other digital cameras were not fast enough to capture those ?special moments?. When I started my search for an AFFORABLE quality Digital SLR I was leaning towards the NIKON D70 (also a great choice). What changed my mind?
Well my friends who are professional and amateur photographers felt that canon offered some advantages for me. I do not want to start a Canon vs. Nikon war. Nikon is different and has its own advantages over Canon. So if you have decided that the features and benefits of a Canon are important to you, this is why I purchased the Canon Rebel XT over the Canon 20D.
Price! The Rebel XT offered all of the features I needed for $500 less. It was Quick enough 3 frames/second, my finger cannot take pictures much faster. The optional lenses are the same for Rebel XT and 20D. Optional IS (Image Stabilization) lenses offer a sharper picture without a tripod. This is a very good thing when toting a diaper bag and a stroller. Amateurs will definitely upgrade the lens or use there existing canon lenses. It is insane to think that the $100 EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6 that is included in the Canon Rebel XT or 20 D will work like a $1000 "L" series lens!(Top of the LINE!)
Sense I saved $500 dollars on buying the Rebel XT over 20D, I can immediately buy I better lens. Some examples of lenses I like: The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is around $600 and the similar EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM on a 35mm body -EF 28-135 sells for only $400.
Finally, I preformed unscientific test. I took a 20D and the Rebel XT (used the same lens, settings, compact flash card, and a tripod) and took some pictures. With the help of my friends we did not see a difference between the picture quality of XT and 20D in 8 X 10 prints. I am a beginner and not an expert photographer; however the Canon Rebel XT does what I need it to!Updated
Update! I just saw dpreview posted in-depth review on the Canon Rebel XT (350) as of April 6th. DP Review?s conclusion was very similar to my unscientific testing. One added note, dpreview compared the burst speeds of the D70, Canon Rebel XT, and Canon Rebel. The speeds of the Nikon D70 and Canon Rebel XT were essentially the same. If you would like to check out this 29 page in-depth review you can find it at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/21 out of 21 users found this user opinion helpful.

An Outstanding Camera - Worth Every Penny
by strive on April 23, 2005
Pros: Excellent image quality, fast startup, fast focusing, USB 2 connectivity, abundant options for creative control, outstanding performance in the fully automatic mode, great built in flash - no red eye!
Cons: I suppose if you are a professional photographer or someone with hands that are larger than a full sized gorilla, you will find something to critique.

Summary: I waited a long time for a camera to emerge in the marketplace like the Rebel XT. Before making my purchase, I examined every digital camera in the $600 to $1,500 price range. Until the Rebel XT came along, the clear choices for me were either the Nikon D70 or the Canon 20D. Both are great cameras: the D70 having an obvious price advantage of a $400 to $500 over the 20D and the 20D having an advantage in image quality and resolution. With price not being the primary issue for me and with subtle, esoteric performance nuances not likely to impress me, my main gripe with these cameras was their large form factors and weight.
Then came the Rebel XT. It offers astounding image quality, plenty of options for creative control, a small size and light-weight form factor that I had been waiting for in a DSLR and it's REALLY FAST! Start up is almost instantaneous, even if it goes into its sleep mode, just press on the shutter button and it's up and running (if only I could wake up that fast myself every morning). The auto focus is also lightning fast.
I am also thrilled with the quality of the photos I am taking with the built-in flash. Not only is the exposure quality great, but try as I may, I haven't even produced one picture with red-eye. Words cannot describe how much that impresses me. Red-eye just drives me nuts!
Having owned two other digital cameras over the past few years, I find myself in awe of my new Rebel XT. Given this camera's performance, size, price and Canon's reputation for producing quality products, the Rebel XT sets a new standard that will be hard to beat. Way to go Canon!!!17 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I just got it special order and WOW. Please trust me it is perfect in every way but one. It occaisionally doesnt properly auto-focus. However this may later be resolved, it may be due to my error, and besides, auto focus is for lame people! I much prefer manual focus. Anyways, get this camera, take it from a pro, its really the best.

I was looking at the Nikon D70, and it sounded pretty good feature-wise, even a mate has one and raves about it..but it was too expensive and to be honest looked a bit too industrial for me, and its physical weight-distribution is a bit lop-sided.
I knew Canon were coming up with a challenger to it, so i thought i'd wait a few months.. now i'm really glad i did!
I cant believe they got it so right - great quality shots, instant power-on, amazing capacity (i got mine with a 1GB CF card, holds 250 shots at 8Mpixel!).
Really easy to get the hang of (this being my first Canon), and nice touches like the mini-manual for throwing in your camera bag.
I do alot of travelling from London to Swizerland, so its lack of bulk is great.
And finally, it feels great to hold and looks the business! Well impressed!6 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

This is a solid camera that provides a lot of bang for the buck.

Pros: Resolution, DIGIC II processor, super-fast boot up time, fast shutter speed and FPS

Summary: I have been using a Canon PowerShot G3 for a couple of years and it was a great camera, but I was outgrowing it and I decided to make the jump to SLRs. The two cameras that immediately jumped at me were the Rebel XT and the Nikon D70. The Nikon has a good feel to it, but the technology is a little old and its resolution is only about 6 MP compared to the 8 MP on the XT. The small size of the XT weirded me out the first time I picked it up, but it really isn't that much different in size to a film SLR and I became comfortable with it the more I handled it in stores.
The DIGIC I processor on the G3 produced awesome shots and I was a big fan of it. The DIGIC II has not disappointed me. The images are brilliant.
The XT also boots up in an instant. I have not missed a shot because the camera didn't turn on in time.
The Digital XT's top shutter speed of 1/4000 is plenty to catch most action shots and the 3.0 frames per second (FPS) continuous shooting is great. I can capture up to 9 frames in one burst using the Large size and Fine resolution file size.
The only real problem that I have had with the camera is that I will occasionally hit the shutter release timer button by accident. While the design might be better, you could also argue that the user should pay more attention to what he is doing. It's certainly not annoying enough to consider returning the camera though.
In short, Digital Rebel XT is a great camera. You can't find another camera with a similar feature set for this amount of money. The only reason I would recommend the Nikon D70 over the XT is if you already have a bunch of Nikon lenses. Otherwise, I don't think you can get a better camera for the money.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I love the camaera functions.Traded in a G6 and the difference in response time, shutter speed, and overall performance has resulted in noticably better picture quality. I am scratching my head trying to figure out who at Canon put the finish on the black exterior though as it consistently scratches and retains dirt.
Updated
this is my 6th digital camera and I've owned for 1.5 years. It is still the best tech product I have ever purchased and without doubt the best camera I've ever owned.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

best entry SLR!
by akravets on April 11, 2005
Pros: fast, light
Cons: some buttons are too sensitive

Some reviews (dpreview.com, dcresournces.com) say that camera is too small for comftable grip. Not sure if this is true. I can comftably hold it, even with one hand. I don't want to repeat what others said so just read review on camera review sites incuding cnet.com. There are couple of video clips here about Canon 350d, check them out.Updated
When you look at review rating of digital rebel it's 7.6. So, if some sees this right away he thinks it's not such a good product since it gets only 75% out 100% and most will rule the camera out. But the reason it's 7.6 is because two reviewers gave a rating of 3 not knowing what they are talking about. Please think before you review!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is my first digital SLR. I decided to buy this one instead of waiting for the Nikon D50 because of its appearence. Plus, there are 2 more megapixel than the D50. This camera can produce excellent pictures with its flashlight in a total darkness room. Battery life is very good too. You should buy extra zoom lens if you like taking pics of landscapes while you are traveling. Most important, the pictures come out perfect. I love it.

Summary: I just purchased this camera and will say that I am quite satisfied with it. From its long battery life, excellent picture quality and JPEG+RAW capability to its over all ease of use and handling. I would prefer it to be a bit bigger since I have larger hands, but thats not all that much of an issue. It would be nice if it also had a slightly bigger LCD but buts just me being picky. I would recommend this camera to anyone, hands down.
