The good: Thanks to great photo quality, a clever hybrid viewfinder, and a cool, retro design, there's a lot to like about the Fujifilm FinePix X100.
The bad: Sluggish performance, especially for such a high-priced camera, and a frustrating navigation control make shooting with the camera a lot less fluid than it should be.
The bottom line: If you have the bucks and you want the best photo quality possible, the Fujifilm FinePix X100 delivers. But definitely try before you buy to make sure the focusing systems won't make you crazy.

Image Quality the Best of The Lot. New Firmware needed.
by wilswong on June 1, 2011
Pros: Image Quality out of camera JPEG second to none. Manual Controls beat menu based systems hands down. And the manual controls leads on to the retro design (with all the dials and switches, it already looked like the old cameras. It is the usage of metal a
Cons: Although focusing is an issue for some, it is pretty quick if one stop relying on scene auto-focus (i.e. getting the camera to decide what to focus on) and opt for the centre/spot focusing method. Just look for a place where there is the most contrast th

Summary: I've owned a number of nice SLRs and compacts over the years including the Canon 20D, the Digital Rebel, SD1000 Digital Elph, Lumix LX5 to name a few. None of them could bring me the satisfaction that I used to feel when using my old Canon F-1 or Olympus OM-1. The plasticy feel and relatively poor build quality of modern cameras take away from the experience of being a (amateur) photographer.
I thought that I would have to step up to a Leica M9 to feel this kind of excitement about photography again... the only problem was the price. In steps the X100 to fill the gap between my checkbook and my hobby. I've had this camera for a month now, and take it everywhere. The photos are spectacular, and the experience of taking them is fantastic.
I'm rarely enthusiastic about products that I buy, but this is one that I feel genuinely connected to and have grown to love.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Relatively small
VERY VERY low noise at high iso

Summary: Overall I have owned just about every really good pro-sumer camera out there in recent times. Presently own the Pentax K-5, Nikon D-7000, Sony Nex 5n..Canon S95. Well besides going broke buying all these cameras :) just wanted to say by FAR my STANDOUT camera and the one I use most is this Fuji X100 for overall amazing picture quality. At the end of the day when you are done fiddling around with settings, playing with dials..whatever, the X100 is an overall standout as it's pictures are for the most apart AMAZING.
Particularly it's color accuracy and VERY low noise at all isos puts it ahead of most cameras out there. I wish it could zoom..obviously I knew it had a fixed lens...which happens to be GREAT. Just sometimes I find myself at an Arboretum or somewhere whee I just wish I could get closer to my subject be it a swan in the water...geese on a lawn..etc etc. You can use your FEET to zoom but try doing that in a lake haha. Other than the fixed lens, this camera is just wonderful THOUGH not rocket fast for sports etc. For portrait photography, landscapes, nature, even buildings his X100 is very hard to beat. It's build quality is both beautiful and it's also built like a tank. It has a built in distance scale and if you use it, you rarely can can a picture that is not in focus. I have generally had nothing but positive issues with it's focus ability. Yes manual focus is just not so great on it however. To sum up..if you are after beautiful creamy color accurate type photos (produces SKIN TONES best I ever saw)..you jut have to try the X100, to me it's in a class all by itself..HIGHLY recommended!!
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Fujifilm
- Part number: X100
- Description: The FinePix X100 features a custom 12.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS high-performance sensor, internally optimized and developed exclusively for this model. Optimization of the angle-of-incidence in conjunction with the specially developed lens maximizes light gathering efficiency extending to the perimeter of the sensor for a sharper image with exceptional clarity. When shooting HD movies, the combination of the large-sized sensor and the large aperture F2 lens, lets users create a soft out-of-focus image - a capability not available in conventional compact cameras. The ideal combination of a fixed focal length lens, high-sensitivity sensor (approximately 10 times the sensitivity of a conventional compact) and a high-performance image processor captures extremely high quality images from low sensitivity to high sensitivity. In standard form, the planned ISO range is from 200 to 6400, but this can be expanded to include 100 and 12800. The FinePix X100 is a high precision digital compact camera that combines modern technology with a traditional camera design to deliver the ultimate in image quality. Featuring an APS-C CMOS sensor (12.3 megapixel), a FUJINON 23mm Single Focal Length Fixed F2 lens, a 2.8" LCD 460K, and the world's first Hybrid Viewfinder, the FinePix X100 captures exceptionally high quality images.
