- Bottom Line:
- The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera, but there's nothing here that screams out "buy it" over similar competitors. It's also on the expensive side for a point-and-shoot upgrader, but has drawbacks for the more advanced user.

Nikon 1 J1 (with 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses, White) price range: $496.95 - $839.00
- Reviewed by: Lori Grunin

The good: The Nikon 1 J1 delivers excellent video and low-ISO photo quality, plus some aspects of the camera's performance lead its class.
The bad: The CX lens system drops manual focus rings on the lenses; you can't use flash above 1/60 sec; and there's no option for an EVF.
The bottom line: The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera, but there's nothing here that screams out "buy it" over similar competitors. It's also on the expensive side for a point-and-shoot upgrader, but has drawbacks for the more advanced user.

Anyway, let me review Lori Grunin's review:
by E-PL on October 19, 2011
Pros: The reviewer had taken her time to go through almost (see Cons) all features.
Cons: The possibility of using Nikkor AF-S lenses with FT-1 F-mount adaptor, turning your lenses to 2.7x longer was not brought up.
Summary: How can you let people write reviews if they have NEVER used the camera?

Poor feature design
by roger russell on September 26, 2011
Pros: Nice color....but that's all.
Cons: Way too highly priced for a 10.1 megapixel at this stage of the game

I've been an avid user of Nikon for decades....all the back to a Fotomic One. This current J1 is a disappoint to me.

Fast and small powerhouse
by Arkona77 on September 28, 2011
Pros: Smal, fast and acurate auto focus, high burst rate 60 fps, user friendly, simple, uses the same battery as d7000, built-in flash, good image quality for 8x10 prints , excellent for 5x7 and 4x6.
Cons: Not water proof
Summary: Sensor technology will improve with future models, competion m43 and aps-c size of the camera/lens won't get smaller

If it wasn't a Nikon I'd ignore it totally.
by ajdooley on September 27, 2011
Pros: Nikon name. Reportedly decent image quality.
Cons: Too expensive for what you get. Bulky. White will attract attention. There are better alternatives unless you just have to have a Nikon -- and then the P700 may be the answer.
Summary: Nikon will sell quite a few of them by virtue of the name only. White ones will be bought by people who want to be seen with them. But nobody ...
Summary: Nikon will sell quite a few of them by virtue of the name only. White ones will be bought by people who want to be seen with them. But nobody is going to buy this "not quite there" model for serious picture taking. I ues Nikon DSLRs and may get the follow-on to the P700 just as a shirt pocket camera -- but my pockets aren't big enough for this thing!

Worse photo quality than LX5 and P7000
by bob1xxxx on September 28, 2011
Pros: none none none
Cons: over priced, big, fugly, closed lens system, and based on sample photos (dp reviews) worse than PAS with smaller sensors.
Summary: Really nikon ? this is a huge but fugly step backwards. Whats next floppy disks for storage? BOOOOOOO!
