The good: Solid image quality; lots of scene modes; versatile burst mode; in-camera help; innovative shooting and processing aids.
The bad: Few fully manual controls; tiny, inaccurate optical viewfinder; slow autofocus in dim light.
The bottom line: A few fun and useful features spice up this competent 5-megapixel point-and-shoot Nikon Coolpix 5900, aimed at snapshot photographers.
Snapshot photographers will like the Coolpix 5900's good image quality, generous assortment of scene modes (five with framing-assist options), and Best Shot mode, which saves only the sharpest image in a series. But the paucity of manual controls reduces the allure for photo enthusiasts, while poor low-light autofocus and an inaccurate optical viewfinder will disappoint photographers of all sorts.

I love my NIKON COOLPIX 5900!
by Gail O on June 21, 2005
Pros: Fabulous photo quality, easy to use, lightweight and small, terrific grip, large LCD, great battery life, great features,
Cons: No manual controls, but enough options for great control anyway.
Summary: This is a great point-and-shoot camera, with many features that, I believe, put it at the top of its class.

I bought the camera in April, and travelled to Italy for a 2-week vacation shortly afterward. It was an absolute pleasure to use and to carry. The battery life is incredibly long. The resulting photos are fabulous.
I'd definitely recommend this camera. I tried and returned a number of others before deciding on the 5900 (including the Canon A95). No regrets!24 out of 24 users found this user opinion helpful.

One of the best options this camera has is the BSS (Best Shot Selector). This feature takes upto 10 photos of the subject and selects the best one. This way you avoid blurry photos.
I've owned a Kodak EZShare and a Minolta Dimage F100 and this camera goes above and beyond the others.17 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased this camera prior to my trip to Britain and can honestly say it takes the most beautiful photo's in most all situations. I've had more than one person comment on how the shot's look like post card's. It's easy to set-up and line up a shot in the more than adequate view finder.

I just fininshed watching Ms. Aimee Baldridge review this camera on the CNET video review and she states that the camera is plastic. Well, it's NOT! It's an alloy body camera that is light yet very sturdy. In the future Ms. Baldridge do your homework a little better and or have one of the male editors who know the difference between alloy and plastic do the review if your not sure. Great camera by Nikon at a great price!10 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the E5900 in March this year and used it mainly to shoot photos for my school magazine, which I am the editor this year. The camera has great battery life (I can do over 200 shots on a single charge with flash on) and good performance too (there's hardly any shutter lag if you prefocus the subject). It's compact enough to fit into almost any pocket and the battery charges from 0 to 100% in just 2 hours. The only drawback is the tiny and inaccurate viewfinder, which means that you have to use the LCD to shoot, which consumes extra battery life. But since the battery life with the LCD on is already so good, that's not a big matter. Anyway, if you don't need the 7 Megapixel 7900, choose this model because it has slightly better performance in continous shot mode and the battery lasts longer because processing smaller images requires less processing power. Shooting at maximum settings (5 MP, fine mode), the initial number of pictures which can be taken shown on the LCD is only 100, but as you take, you will find that since most of the shots are only around 1 MB, you can take more than 200 shots using a 256 MB card. I find this quirky as these are five megapixel shots and my school's Canon A400 which is only 3 MP produces larger file size images. However, comparing the images with the E5900 and a Nikon D70, there wasn't much difference when samples were enlarged. So overall, this is a great camera, recommended for beginners and more advanced photographers. Remember to read the manual on how to optimally tweak the settings.

Summary: This is my second digital camera. My first was a beginner's camera with moderate features and I wanted to take my digital photography to the next level. After searching for the right camera, the Nikon 5900 was it. I bought it from Comp-U-Plus for somewhere around $250 and a 256MB SD Card for $25. The 256MB can hold 195 pictures on NORMAL quality and 99 on FINE quality. I was very pleased with the way this camera takes photos. Its easy to use but still has profestional level features. The Panorama Assist is great for taking scenery photos too large to fit in one picture. It is also great indoors and for taking portrait photos. All in all, this is a awesome camera for a great price. Definitely look into this camera.
