A pared-down version of the Coolpix 7900, this 7-megapixel, 3X optical-zoom model squarely targets the snapshot set with many of the same hand-holding features as its slightly more sophisticated sibling. The 7.1-ounce Nikon Coolpix 7600 is a little chunkier and doesn't have the same aesthetic appeal, but it delivers where it really counts: helpful features and very good picture quality.

Controls on the Coolpix 7600 have a much roomier layout than on the 7900, thanks to the extra real estate provided by its smaller 1.8-inch LCD. The mode dial is on the back of the camera next to the zoom lever and is easy to ratchet through with your thumb.

As with many Nikon snapshot cameras, the 7600 provides a broad selection of scene modes, and framing guidelines are available for the more common scenes, such as Portrait, Landscape, Sports, and Night Portrait. However, the 7600 falls a couple of options shy of the 7900--there's no underwater mode, for example. The company's Face-Priority autofocus is available in Portrait mode, and red-eye correction and Nikon's D-lighting exposure adjustment are part of the 7600's in-camera postprocessing features. As with the 7900, however, we couldn't summon up any demon eyes in our subjects, making it impossible to test the in-camera fix. D-lighting, which brightens the image after it's shot, worked reasonably well on underexposed and backlit subjects.

Perhaps the most user-friendly aspect of the camera is its built-in help system. Activated from within any of the menu sets, it describes the purpose of each feature and scene. There's little need for it, though; with a nod toward simplicity, there are few imaging options on the 7600. Other than white balance, exposure compensation, color (natural, vivid, black-and-white, sepia, or cyanotype), and picture size, there simply aren't any parameters to adjust. The camera even determines ISO sensitivity automatically.

You can run the 7600 off two alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride AA cells. Oddly, Nikon has a menu setting to switch among the battery types, ostensibly to optimize performance for each chemistry's power-drain characteristics. Overall, performance is slightly above average for its class. Shutter lag ranges from 0.7 second to 1.1 seconds, depending upon scene contrast, but low-light autofocus is hit or miss, even with the AF-assist lamp, and flash recycling felt a bit sluggish. The camera starts up in a sprightly 2.3 seconds, however.

Image quality is quite good, with naturally rendered colors, accurate exposures, and reasonably sharp focus. We saw little purple fringing or other chromatic aberrations. Noise levels were relatively low, and overall, the auto white balance worked well outdoors. Movie mode--especially with vibration reduction enabled--and macro focus delivered above-average results.

For what it is--a basic, easy-to-use snapshot camera for beginners--the 7600 does a very good job. But if you suspect that it might be a little too lightweight on features, you should check out its slightly more expensive sibling, the Coolpix 7900, before clicking that Submit button on your order.

Awesome little camera!

I went from a 5 megapixel to this 7.1 and WOW, I'm shocked by the difference in clarity. I find that Nikon has done something other brands need to think about more, battery life. My batteries seem to last longer on this camera than any of my last four digital cameras. The camera has a setting to that reduces/eliminates red eye,it works great, I've had only a couple of pictures with slight hint of red eye and what bit you can see of red eyes wasn't objectionable. I think once you get all of your settings in line, it's a great point and shoot digital camera, but I also think someone like my Mother would get a bit confused with the the menu and submenus for all of the available settings.(sorry Mom!) For the price and quality I think this little camera packs a punch and is well worth the money! I highly recommend this camera!

Fantastic camera!

Summary: I don't know what camera the reviewers who mentioned poor low light focussing & the inability to portray purple accurately were using, but it couldn't have been the Nicon Coolpix 7600. I've put my new one through its paces thoroughly, & not only did not encounter either of these problems, I found this camera to be the best I have owned out of 4 digital point & shoot cameras.
This unit is incredibly light & compact, which I find a big plus. There are so many features it takes a week of study to go through them all. You can choose 3,5,7 normal, & 7 highest quality megapixels. There are numerous specific scene choices that really improve your pictures in those situations. The quality & resolution of the photos is absolutely excellent - crisp & clear even with zooming & large prints. It takes regular or NiMH or lithium AA batteries, which I like much better than custom batteries just for the unit. I have Monster batteries & a charger & this works great.
I highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants a point & shoot that takes professional quality pictures & that you don't even notice when you're carrying.
Almsot forgot - the price is right, too.

Summary: For the price at 350.00 you get a good camera. Great pictures. Easy to use and figure out all the dials on it. This is also a small camera, you can fit it into your shirt pocket. Only two things I didn't like about it were because it is so small if you don't watch where your finger is you end up with your finger over the flash, so you have to move your finger out of the way. The other is I think they call it slow shutter speed. When you take the picture it takes a second or so for the camera to flash and take the picture. So, it wouldn't be good for someone who needs pictures of the moment. Which I have lost out on because of that. But otherwise I really don't have a lot of those. Unless you are a professional or need a camera for the moment, this camera is well worth it!

Summary: Not good for people with kids. I was told after I bought this by camera store that the 7600 is loaded with OLD technology. Only because I took it back on two differetn occasions trying to make it faster. It would take forever and a day to reload after taking a picture, even with Li-ion batteries and a fast 133x SD card, it made no difference. I was conned into this camera due to rebates, if you want a lightweight, slow camera and fairly easy to use, buy this, if you want a fast camera to keep up with kids, buy what I did the Canon A620 for about 20-50 dollars more.

Summary: After living seven years with my 2.1Mb Canon PowerShot S10, it was time to go get something new. I knew from previous experiences that the type of shooting I do 95% of the time, I wanted something small that could travel easily and would take standard over-the-counter batteries (being in Europe without a recharge sucked!). A bit of reviewing found the 7600 at BeachPhoto for some ludicriously low price brand new, so I ordered it and a 2Gb memory card.
Maybe I was spoiled by the Canon S10, but this seven-year newer Nikon has more menus & choices required to do the same things (and doesn't have many of the same abilities in setting basic ASA rates & exposure times), and also has poorer low-light performance, even when shooting static objects in close flash range (I do a lot of eBay & shoot pics of stuff to list up -- often at night in the den). So, to get the same kind of pic color quality as the S10 means I need to whip out a 500 watt work light for lighting -- standard interior lighting + the built-in flash simply doesn't cut it.
On the other hand, the movie mode in regular daylight & in standard interior light is superb (take 'em for as long as your memory card will not be over-filled; with 2Gb that's about 2 hours). Sound quality is reasonably good, but you need to speak up clearly if you want to be clearly distinguishable from a bunch of background noises (such as party or a TV in the background).
It has some interesting capabilities, such a special night-landscape feature (does a good job of getting lots of depth and detail -- but the shutter will be open for 4 secs at a pop, so it needs to rest on something solid), a scanner-style document shooting mode (to take pictures of pages for OCR purposes - OCR software not included), and even a fireworks mode to take pictures of fireworks (again, a minor bit quirky -- you point, half click to prep it, then wait and right when the firework opens, hit the button for the real shot).
The size is great, readily portable, superlight (hint: case logic makes a case that's just the right size and belt-mountable for about $10). Batteries, even rechargable ones, are cheap and readily available virtually anywhere on the planet (a major reason I choose this camera over the Canon elph/S400/S450/S500/etc). Battery life is quite impressive, and the battery-life meter seems to be highly accurate (as verses to some cameras that simply run til you get a low battery warning).
I'm not really sure why they bothered to put a real viewfinder on it; unless your hands and face are the size of an 6 year old's, you'll probably find it very impractical to look thru the viewfinder (I keep getting cheek smudge-prints on the LCD screen when I try to do so, so I just use the LCD screen instead).
Oh, and a big hands-down to Nikon for trying to making the ability to download the documentation from their website require a serial number from the camera -- many people order their camera and then download the documentation to read while they're waiting for the camera to arrive. Ditto on the software...
Minimum picture/shooting size is 3Mb -- you can't take anything smaller except in movie mode.
Thoughts:
If I was just a rich tourist, I'd probably get a Canon S500. If I was just an eBay'er, I'd probably get an older Canon PowerShot used.
If I did more outdoor and high-quality work, I'd look at Nikon's L1 camera which does pretty much what this one does, but offers a much better lens capability (much more zoom) or the D50 which is a pro-level true SLR ($650 body-only)
For the typical user who uses a camera for a bit of everything (family gatherings, xmas, travel, etc), and who mostly takes the types of shots that were the realm of home-user 35mm cameras, this is the bomb. It won't make you Ansel Adams, but it will give you good pics in very large sizes (at least for now -- in five years, 7Mb pics will be small by then-standards).
Finally, optional accessories:
Nikon only offers a few accessories for this camera - an AC adaptor (for running straight of AC), a case (overpriced IMHO), rechargable batteries & battery charger (easily outclassed in both total power and cost by offerings elsewhere -- look for 2800mAh NiMh batteries on eBay, the web, or your local battery store).
The owner's manual also speaks of a remote flash unit that's compatible, but it's not listed on Nikon's accessory list -- the extra flash unit is triggered by the light from the built-in flash, allowing it to be used for added fill-in lighting; a number of firms offer such flash units and you can use multiple ones if it helps you (I've been considering it for the product pictures for eBay).

Summary: My first exposure (pardon the pun) to digital photography was with a Nikon 4300. I was, and still am, impressed with that camera. When I found out I could get a Nikon 7600 for $300, I jumped at the chance.

The 7600 has an improved ED lens which is important to me since I take pictures of houses for a real estate company. Nikon's reputation for quality lenses was a major factor im my purchase of this camera. The controls are well laid out and the camera is easy to hold. I also purchased a 512MB memory card since the 128MB cards I had for my 4300 won't last long in this camera. As a minimum, I recommend a 256MB memory card.
