Nikon Coolpix 8700 price range: $729.99
- Reviewed by: Eamon Hickey
- Reviewed on: 05/09/2004
- Released on: 02/28/2004
The good: Excellent, highly detailed images; impressive 8X ED-Nikkor zoom lens; sturdy magnesium-alloy body; RAW-file capture.
The bad: Easy to accidentally activate some controls; long RAW shot-to-shot time; slow low-light AF; no live histogram in manual mode; 30-second limit on video clips; full RAW-file editing software costs $99 extra.
The bottom line: It shoots good photos, but mediocre performance and a serious design flaw may keep this 8-megapixel camera out of the hands of enthusiasts.

EXCELLENT for advanced amatuer photographers.
Pros: This camera is an 8.8 not 7.2! Consumer Reports says this is the #1 6-8 megapixel camera! (november 2004 magazine) This is not for beginners or point-and-shooters. In the auto mode, it acts like a point-and-shoot with a large zoom. I have a Canon AT-1 fil
Cons: Screen is on the small side. Does NOT come with memory card! (Be willing to pay extra!) It likes to use 1/4 - 1/2 sec exposure. (Buy a tripod) No AA batteries. (Buy a spare battery, it's worth the money.)The Pro's heavly outweigh the Con's.

Major disappointment but great pictures
by scottandringa on February 26, 2005
Pros: Outstanding picture quality
Cons: Frequent software problems. Flash didn't activate properly. Too complicated for new digital photographers and not sophisticated enough for true cameraphiles.

Summary: First, full disclosure. I have always been a big fan of Nikon cameras and resolved long ago, in the SLR era, that I would have one. So, in the digital era I decided it was time to upgrade, if you'll pardon the metaphor, from a Chevy to a Cadillac. But this camera was a headache from the day I bought it and I quickly realized I was better off in a Malibu than an El Dorado. The thickness of the instruction book alone was enough to cause major buyer's remorse but my fear turned out to be well-founded; problems started early and recurred often, beginning with total system crashes and finally pushing me over the edge when the flash wouldn't pop-up automatically, rendering the camera totally inoperable. Repairs (by Nikon) failed to fix the problems. When it did work, the capture delay was excrutiatingly long; and although I realize that is a function of the card not the camera, I actually upgraded the card when I bought the camera and, incidentally, do not have that problem with the camera I bought to replace this lemon. The final insult was that the camera was $1,000 (give or take a few dollars) when I bought it, but by the time I lost patience and returned it about a year later, the price had dropped by well over $200. In my opinion, what was apparently the beta version of this camera was not ready, and therefore should not have been, on the market. Future buyers should not assume, like I did, that just because the camera is produced by Nikon it must be a high-quality product. While I realize Nikon has many excellent products; perhaps even in it's digital camera lines, this was not one of them. The few excellent pictures it did take were not worth the expense, time and trouble required to make them. So, to sum up, my advice to you would be to bide your time; save your money; and buy a Canon Digital Rebel. Camera snobbery aside; it is a much better value and, frankly, a much better camera.

This camera suits me.
Pros: Size, shape, construction, clarity of photos, fast bright flash, efficient battery use, and not too heavy/light. LCD and TTL viewers both bright and crisp and informative. My favorite feature is the articulating LCD.
Cons: Compact size can be a nuisance when held by large hands. The red-eye lamp is easily covered by the second finger.

an excellent camera
Pros: ability to use viewfinder in brighter light situations, excellent quality pictures, light weight, variety of modes to use besides 2 user modes, and good price, after rebates, and will take microdrive in lieu of regular card, which gives better (more) stor
Cons: can be a little daunting to get camera set for specific purposes, and once a user setting is made, when a change is required, make sure you don't just point and shoot. also sometimes difficult to get to where you want to in the menus.

Excellent Camera, not for the faint of heart

Summary: I brought this camera as a upgrade from my Lumix 10. I was very impressed with the photo quality, colors and the 8MP. I like to shoot a lot of sporting events that my kids/wife are in and wasn't happy to find there was no sport mode. I was about to take it back and get a dSLR, but was persuaded to give it another try. After a lot of trial and error, I was able to capture events with no problems. If you aren't willing to invest the time to learn this camera, I'd suggest saving yourself the time and money and get a point-and-shoot. This is by far the best choice for me.

I'm not sure what the design flaw is supposed to be, but I've yet to find one. I've had this camera for 1 1/2 years and not a single problem has arisen. It doesn't do so well in low light situations, but good editing software can usually correct this problem. All in all, the best digital camera I've ever had, and I've had 3 so far!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

The weight and overall size is nice. the buttons on the side of the lens take a bit getting used to, but if you use it often enough, it won't bother you at all.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Available best 8MP Digital camera in 500-700 USD
by Arunanhshu on April 15, 2005
Pros: 8MP, Compact, taking outstanding pictures, 35-280mm lens and very good look.
Cons: Slow focus in low lights rather can't focus in low lights in all seted modes or metering and only 30s movie.

Summary: I feel it is the best camera in it's 8MP line, it has 35-280mm zoom lens, 8x Zoom-Nikkor lens f = 8.9-71.2mm (equivalent to 35-280mm) F2.8-4.2 with macro; 14 elements in 10 groups; all glass, Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) applied; two glass-molded ED lens elements included,ISO 50-400, Mechanical and charge-coupled electronic shutter; 1/4,000 (with minimum aperture) to 2 s in AUTO mode and Programmed Auto [P]; 1/4,000 to 8 s in Shutter-Priority Auto [S] and Aperture-Priority Auto [A], 1/4,000 to 8 s and Bulb/Time (up to 10 minutes) in Manual [M], 1/8,000 to 1/30 s in Ultra HS (high-speed) mode. At some apertures, maximum shutter speed is 1/2,000 s.where as in Nikon Coolpix 8800 the highest shutter is 1/3000 s. it has very good white balance, taking accurate colour you can enhance it as per requirment. I recomend it for all purpose camera. at present I never found better camera than it with this price.

Excellent point&shoot vs SLR compromise
Pros: Good lense, excellent zoom, and features. I take issue with CNETs reviews....these guys need to start reading their own reviews...the 8700 is an enhancement over the 5700 yet they gave the 8700 a lackluster review while giving the 5700 a stellar one...the
Cons: Complex menu set..., shutter lag (Typical to most digitals of any manufacturer)
