Summary: I bought this camera for my daughter for her 12th birthday. It works great for her on a day to day basis. I shoot with a Nikon D50 and find myself using her little L18 when I need a quick shot or just want to shoot something for fun. Her L11 broke in 3 days, this was a best replacement camera!

great affordable point and shoot camera
by onni1985 on May 29, 2008
Pros: Very easy to use, excellent picture, affordable
Cons: It uses a special Nikon USB cable--not standard mini USB

Summary: I recently picked up this camera before heading on a two week trip to China. For the money I think it's outstanding. I have no complaints other than the silly special Nikon USB cord.
It might not be loaded with special features for advanced photography--although it has plenty. But for a simple point and shoot camera I highly recommend it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Few power-on hours, Lense malfunction, powering off.
by its2am on April 13, 2011
Pros: Price. Large screen.
Cons: Prepare to battle with auto functions. Camera accurately focuses then backs off for some reason rarely taking in-focus images. Most images "fuzzy" and anti shake function a joke.

Summary: Prepare to battle with auto functions. Camera accurately focuses then backs off for some reason rarely taking in-focus images. Most images "fuzzy" and anti shake function a joke. We bought this camera from a very reputable camera store. We are in the process of looking for the extended warranty we purchased, hopefully we are within the two years. This is what happens when shills are hired to post fake consumer reviews, these individuals work FOR the manufacturer and now reviews. once innocent and helpful, are subversive advertisements. But, you never know, I might actually be working for the competition.

Great camera for everyday use and for the price
by sdmytriw on March 20, 2011
Pros: I've had this camera for about 2 years, shot hundreds, if not thousands of shots on walks and trips. It does can do a lot, especially if you use some of the menu items for your situation.
Cons: Has a problem in high contrast areas - ie, forest screnes with many bright lighted areas next to dark foliage ares.
Menu system takes a while to get used to.
Initally had the battery problem, but discovered I was using some very old rechargeable batteriSummary: Light, easy to carry camera that takes very good pictues.

Drains the Batteries - piece of crap
by pamjc on January 13, 2011

Summary: You get what you pay for. This is my second Coolpix in 6 months. I thought the first one was a fluke - it drained batteries in no time then never recognized new batteries - kept saying "Batteries Exhausted" no matter how many batteries I tried. After owning this one for about two months and taking a total of about 20 pictures, it's doing the same thing.

Had it for only a year and the screen is messed up.
by krisz2765 on December 7, 2010
Pros: Easy to use and set up.
Cons: Screen will only take pictures in zoom mode after barely one year of use. Nikon's on line customer service is horrible, they will not reply to my messages to help me.
Summary: Not worth the $100/

Amazing Product, well worth it.
by future_photographer on October 28, 2010
Pros: Great images, steady focus, great zoom, sturdy. Definitely for everyday use.
Cons: Not much to say about the cons, except it has a loud shudder when focusing (compared to many other cameras), and also takes a while to focus.
Summary: I love how it's chic, and how it takes AA batteries. I got this as a birthday gift, but it was in fact used and scratched. I've had ...
Summary: I love how it's chic, and how it takes AA batteries. I got this as a birthday gift, but it was in fact used and scratched. I've had this amazing camera for 1 1/2 years, plus the countless amounts of times my friends and I have dropped it., and its in good condition. The problem with my camera, now, is that my OCD is to turn things off when they aren't in use, so the on and off lens protector has stopped working. Because it's used, and an archive, the warranty, obviously expired. I really want to purchase another one of these, but the price is actually quite high. (I was told the camera was bought for $30.) But all in all, I would LOVE it if it still worked.

I will never buy another Nikon camera again.
by Tiger-sea on August 30, 2010
Pros: You will need lots of AA batteries with you, it drains off overnight.
Cons: uses lots of batteries
Summary: Easy to use camera, but it drains off your AA batteries overnight. My Fuji and Canon can be used for days with one charge.

Best Point-And-Shoot Around!
by in2horses247 on February 10, 2010
Pros: *Excellent quality pictures for a P.a.S.
*Small and lightweight, perfect for pockets
*Very good optionally hi-res video
*Very sturdy; can be used for years or dropped without falling apart
*Huge LCD Live View screenCons: *Mic on video is very sensitive and loud sounds overload it
*Will say it's focused but won't be
*Very little adjustability
*Poor white balance/long exposures become yellow
*Slow turnon/initial adjusting of white balanceSummary: This camera is the best point-and-shoot that I have ever worked with. Its large LCD is very convenient for shots with strange angles. I can carry it in my pocket ...
Summary: This camera is the best point-and-shoot that I have ever worked with. Its large LCD is very convenient for shots with strange angles. I can carry it in my pocket anywhere, even in tight jeans. It is very sturdy; I've dropped it and bumped against corners with it in my pocket multiple times. I've even fallen off a horse onto it, and it didn't break; instead it left bruises on my leg.
Some people have complained that it does not have true Macro, but I do not find this to be a problem as it does take excellent closeups.
The video is excellent if you use the 640 mode, but this does take up a lot of memory, and 340* quality is only average. The mic is very sensitive and tends to overload with loud noises.
This camera has very little adjustibility, but if you learn your way around it, you can trick it into doing certain things for you (Sports scene mode for higher exposure, etc). Indoor pictures aren't great for this camera because artificial light tends to turn yellow in pictures, but low light pictures with natural light are beautiful, especially Sunset Scene or Dusk Scene mode pictures. Sometimes it will say it's focused but won't be, so you must be patient while it figures out what you're looking at. Turnon time is average and white balance takes some time to adjust, but this is not a big deal to me.
All in all, this is an excellent point-and -shoot but comes with standard fallbacks of PAS's. This does not prevent taking of amazing pictures. I've won multiple photography contests with it. People will ask me "Wow, you must have one of those huge SLR's, right?" And I'm proud to say "No, I used my litte Nikon Coolpix L18."
