The good: Great LCD; stereo mic; 10x zoom in an attractive compact body.
The bad: Poor low-light photo quality; no optical zoom while recording movies; mixed shooting performance; no semimanual, manual modes.
The bottom line: A nice design and a couple extra features keep the Nikon Coolpix S8000 from being an also-ran compact megazoom.

A great point and shoot that takes excellent pictures.
by Ed Abramson on June 8, 2010
Pros: Zoom range, quality of the shots, easy to use and the smart portrait system is amazing.
Cons: Placement of the flash. Once you get used to it, it is fine and if you hold it right, placing your left hand at the bottom of the camera and holding it between your thumb and pointing finger, you can hold it steady.

Great pictures, a couple video quirks
by cmhotz on May 15, 2010
Pros: Awesome pictures
Love the sports mode for stop-motion
Video looks great
High quality LCDCons: Have to zoom before starting video (only digital zoom once recording)
When using zoom during video, can hear clicks as it adjusts in the video that is recorded
Flash does not always fully open automaticallySummary: Overall I have been quite pleased with this camera. The still shots at 14MP look fabulous, and the 3MP sports shots are great for capturing motion (we used it to ...
Summary: Overall I have been quite pleased with this camera. The still shots at 14MP look fabulous, and the 3MP sports shots are great for capturing motion (we used it to take rapid-fire shots of kids going down a waterslide and they came out great). With the flash popping up on the top of the left side of the camera you have to be careful not to cover it with your finger. The only real downside that I have found so far is that you cannot use the optical zoom while taking video...and even the digital zoom makes noise (clicks) that can be heard in the recorded video...so you pretty much want to just zoom before starting to record, and then leaving it alone.
USB charging is another great feature...no need to find an outlet, just plug it into the computer.

Fabulous camera for the non-pro

Quick action
Most of the time you don't even need the flash
Sleek look almost sexy
Great zoom
HD quality video is amazing alsoCons: Sometimes takes pictures when you are not expecting it too.

Summary: This camera 14 megapixal camera is great especially for those that are not on the pro level. It is very user friendly. The video quality is very nice unless you don't know how to use it then you will fumble around with it and get poor quality. You just have to read the manual for this option even though most options on this camera don't require the manual. The picture quality is amazing and I can't say it enough!!!
The only reason I did not give this camera a solid 5 is because the HD video part is a little difficult to figure out but that is really the only downfall and if you figure that part out then you really do have the perfect camera.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Average stills, awful video quality

Summary: Sure, the still photography is fine on this. It's also fine on all the other p&s cameras on the market. The reason I bought this over the others is because of the HD video...which is utter junk.
I literally get better video on the 2mp camera on my phone (Samsung Epix) than I do on this camera.
Basically, it looks like the Nikon shoots video in 640x480, and just blows it up to 1280x720.
Moreover, the sound is horrible. There's a high-pitch distortion going on, AND there's some sort of stuttered clicking noise going on ever few seconds. I eliminated all variables on my end in troubleshooting this, but the noise remains.
Bottom line: I wanted a camera that works at least as good as the camera on my mobile phone, one that takes great pics, and as an additional feature, shoots good video. The pics are fine, but the video is HORRIBLE.
So, if you want a camera that shoots great pics with horrible, useless video, this is your camera....but really, if that's what you're looking for, you can probably find one for a lot less than $300, by avoiding the Nikon.
It's surprising & frustrating that the best-selling p&s camera can fall so short.
FujiFilm, Canon, Samsung. and Panasonic ALL make better cameras. I took this back, and exchanged it for the Panasonic Lumix ZS5...which beats this Nikon in every way.3 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Even a pro photographer will find this useful!
by nigelcummings on June 5, 2010
Pros: Very good image stabilisation, sharp lens if used sensibly - it is after all, the photographer, not the camera that is usually at fault when photographs are poor - S8000 is largely automated, so a little sense applied to ISO & zoom usage helps
Cons: Battery is a little on the measly side at approx 200 shots per charge - always carry a spare! Controls can seem a little small for large hands, and thus a little fiddly to use. Tripod socket off centre, video sound quality somewhat hissy and reedy

Summary: Your investment in an S8000 gives you an awful lot of camera and an awful lot of build and picture quality from a box smaller than a pack of playing cards - it is an ideal pocketable precisin camera, that also happens to bbe a great little snap shooter to. The S8000 if used with care (read the manual please before complaining) will provide extremely sharp and colourful images that will please the majority . Used at low ISO settings (100 ISO being the best), the S8000 cannot fail to provide good dynamic range, low noise and accurate colours. I used this camera alongside a Nikon D300S equipped with 18-200mm zoom, during a trip around Europe and North Africa last month (May 2010), images of the Parthenon in Greece, the Pyramids in Egypt, Ephesus in Turkey and the various landmarks of Rome, taken with this 'humble' camera held up very well against those taken with my wieldy DSLR Combo. In fact the S8000 turned out to be exceptionally pleasing with A4 and A3 prints beng the norm. This camera is equipped with a number of 'gimmicky modes' though, such as blink detection and subject tracking, enabling them slows the camera down, best to avoid these unless you feel they are absolutely essential. The ability to dial in extra colour saturation, or for that matter decrease colour saturation at will, proves very useful in fine tuning the results you get from this camera. macro mode too is impressive. Nikon have thoughfully added a D-lighting post processing option on this camera, as well as some limited retouching and resizing facilities - these options work well - D-Lighting in particular will make photos taken in harsh and unfavourable lighting conditions 'stand out' - a case in point being shots I took with the S8000 of the Pyramids, Sphinx and tombs in Egypt (lighting can be harsh in North Africa) - wthout the appication of D-lighting , shadow detail would have been lost, the application of D-Lighting has resulted in very pleasing images. Dont buy this camera if all you intend to do is shoot video - the video facility is good for occasional record use, dont expect to use it to shoot an 'epic'! having said that, if used with a little care results from the video feature on this camera can be most acceptable - the S8000 does not zoom optically during video, so compose your video scenes carefully, keep scene length short (8-10 secs each seems to work well), cut them all together later and you will have a good video record to compliment your still images - despite other comments I have seen here, the video quality is very very very much better than the video quality that can be achieved from camera phones. Audio quality is a little harsh, though the stereo microphones do add a little depth, noticeably lacking on mono audio equipped compacts. Considering the S8000's low price, the fact that it has an impressive sharp 10X zoom lens, superior image stabilisation compared with other compact digital cameras I have also used (Canon, Fuji, Pentax and Ricoh) and good low ISO, image quality - it would be hard to find a better more feature filled 'micro' compact camera at any price. Regarding ISO range - auto 100-400 is a great snap shooter setting - as the ISO level is cranked up, images become softer and more pastel in colour - I would for example only use the 1600 and 3,200 ISO settings in 'emergency' situations to capture images that would otherwise be unobtainable. ISO 100-200 V.Good- ISO 400 displays some film like grain, ISO 800 and above yields noticeably softer images - but what do you expect from such a small image sensor? this camea fits in a shirt pocker for good ness sake!

good at begining, not after 9 months and over 2000 pics
by billcp on November 23, 2011
Pros: easy to use, but began to fail after 9 months of steady use, we took over 2000 pics, but then the close ups began to fail, auto focus was intermittent and time to start and focus became long.
Cons: Sent back to Nikon service in NY was returned after 3 weeks and did not work any better. returned for service and again after 3 weeks it did not work. Returned a third time and Nikon wanted over $100 dollars to fix.
Summary: I would never buy another Nikon product!

Very nice camera for the money
by flea77 on April 21, 2011
Pros: So far the images have been very good. The low light capabilities are good for this class of camera, I never expected them to rival my DSLR in that area. Compact, fast, easy, exactly what I wanted for a little pocket camera.
Cons: Not thrilled about the placement of the pop-up flash, if they could have moved it at least 1/2" towards the center it would have been much better, or not made it a pop-up. It workes fine, just have to hold the camera a little different than normal.
Summary: Overall I am please with the purchase. I bought it for a little pocket vacation/events camera when I do not want to carry around a large DSLR or rangefinder. ...
Summary: Overall I am please with the purchase. I bought it for a little pocket vacation/events camera when I do not want to carry around a large DSLR or rangefinder. It will not even come close to the quality and flexibility that those cameras offer, but then it costs less than 1/10th of what my DSLR and one small lens costs so I definately got more than what I paid for it. With realistic expectations this camera will not disappoint.

Not happy with Nikon Service Department!!
by rogerbrucesmith on March 10, 2011
Pros: Compact, Ease of use
Cons: Didn't hold-up under VERY Tender loving care! This camera died after using it a couple of months! The LCD Screen was defective, PERIOD!! Of course Nikon blamed it on me, I paid them for repairs & chalk it up as a lesson learned! No more Nikons!!
Summary: Started out being a great little camera....Then after owning it a few months, the left side of the LCD Screen became cloudy width vertical lines in it making it ...
Summary: Started out being a great little camera....Then after owning it a few months, the left side of the LCD Screen became cloudy width vertical lines in it making it impossible to view the menu or function properly. It was still well before the warranty ended, so I sent it back to the factory. I waited three weeks and heard nothing so I phoned the Nikon repair department and was informed that I must have dropped it, therefore it wasn't covered. This was totally WRONG. I was taking a picture as this happened & I always carry it in a cushioned case. So to make a long story short....they ripped me off for $107.46 on a LCD repair that was defective!!!
CANON will be my choice of cameras in the future!!! -
shots are grainy and really awful
by clickfitz on February 21, 2011
Pros: The ONLY thing good is the size
Cons: Takes terrible shots, no matter what the settings. I rely on cnet reviews, and shouldn't have on this one. One of the worst purchases I've made
Summary: Every picture is out of focus!!
