The good: The Nikon Coolpix S9100 has fast shooting performance, a wide, long lens in a pocketable body, and several useful and fun shooting modes.
The bad: The Coolpix S9100's photo and video quality is soft, particularly at high ISOs and in low-light conditions. It also lacks auto picture rotation.
The bottom line: Nikon produces another solid point-and-shoot compact megazoom with the Coolpix S9100 by offering fast performance, good photos, and an excellent feature-to-price ratio.

Summary: Bought the camera beginning in April for my trip to Turks it took awesome pictures. I had it half way thru the trip turned it on the it froze up and couldnt take a picture. Went back to the store and they switched it out, now 5 months later on a weekend trip with friends it happened again with new camera. Software issues, I think its time for a different camera. Can't rely on it when you want to use it and I like Nikon. Hope this helps.

It Freezes Up!!!

Summary: The camera comes loaded with features with the 18x optical zoom being its USP but inexplicably it just freezes up without a reason. You could be taking a snap on the auto mode or the scene selector mode or the night mode or maybe operating the full HD video and bang in the middle of it,the camera is dead-something like a laptop or a computer hanging up in which the only solution is ctrl+alt+del...Regrettably nikon doesn't has those buttons and believe it or not you have to take out the battery and reinsert it again for the camera to regain its consciousness..Its something like Tony Soprano passing out in "The Sopranos":)
I bought this camera because my first digicam was a nikon which I bought in 2005 and still use without a problem..and I love the natural image quality of it..Alas the mighty have fallen and how!!!
I want a refund and not a replacement because after researching on the net I have found hundreds of similar cases whereby even replacements of the same model S9100 have been having the same problem.Nikon R U LISTENING!!!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

One of the better new point and shoot cameras
by mbs1948 on March 30, 2011
Pros: Good battery life
Very bright display
Very good photo quality (if you use the right setting)
Good control placement
Good exposure results
Good selection of burst settingsCons: VR or IS vibrates and makes noise (just like the DSLR Nikkor lens) - is somewhat distracting
AF has some trouble searching when shooting landscapes... but much better in landscape mode
Noise in low light situations, even at low ISOSummary: I compared both the Nikon S9100 and Lumix ZS8, and the Nikon was superior in all aspects. Something bad has happened to the ZS8. The photo quality of the earlier ...
Summary: I compared both the Nikon S9100 and Lumix ZS8, and the Nikon was superior in all aspects. Something bad has happened to the ZS8. The photo quality of the earlier Lumix models like the ZS5 was close to the Nikon... and perhaps a little better in marco mode...but the Nikon is still pretty good.

The reviews didn't prepare me - look elsewhere.
by videoismylife on November 23, 2012
Pros: 1. It was cheaper than most pocket zooms (but for a reason)
2. Quite a brick in the hand - felt solid
3. Fast "on".
4. Menu system better than average.
5. Pretty screen - but it didn't help see image flaws.Cons: 1. Excessive, destructive noise reduction.
2. Poor auto-exposure; chooses 1/10s but IS can't handle it.
3. Features like panorama don't work well.
4. Heavy, large, corners too sharp - not a "pocket zoom"
5. IS can't handle 18X; blurry.Summary: The reviews I read didn't prepare me at all. I used this cam for about 400 pics over a couple weeks - I thought it was going well, the ...
Summary: The reviews I read didn't prepare me at all. I used this cam for about 400 pics over a couple weeks - I thought it was going well, the preview on the back seemed to show decent images. Then I tried to print a bunch - they were AWFUL. Grainy and blotchy, even at base ISO poor resolution with noise in the shadows. By ISO 400 hair looks plastic, colors become blotchy and washed out.
I sent it back, got a Panasonic ZS15 and I'm quite happy. The Canon SX260 would be a good choice too. -
Freezes after a period of time
by gecrash on July 4, 2012
Pros: Good shots when carrying a DSLR and a bag of lenses is inconvenient
Cons: Freezes up requiring the battery to be removed in order to reset, eventually just dies altogether.
Summary: After purchasing this and seeing an astonishing lack of firmware updates for it from Nikon (given the huge amount of similar freezing problems among the user base), I will not ...

Summary: Recently we were going on a cruise and our s8100 stopped working. We had to get a new camera since we sent it in ofr warranty work. Wal mart had the s9100 for $199 so i jumped on it. That said, the phone does have some flaws and benefits compared to the s8100 which we got back in working condition.
1) I personally like the red s8100 over the red s9100. the 8100's lens was black, but the 9100 is also red. ugly. We got the black 9100.
2) Boot up times and time to focus are about even. i want to say the 9100 has a slightly slower picture to picture time, but not enough to say ARRRR.
3) The focus. i've taken several pictures side by side and overall, the s8100 has better pictures. while I checked the settings to make sure they are the same, generally, the 8100 has everything in focus in the same area, while the 9100 focuses on one spot and the rest can be slightly blurry. the latest example was standing in my kitchen taking a picture of a bowl of fruit and something else on the counter. I stood in the same spot, zoomed to the same area (f-stops were different though) and snapped away. I focused on the item next to the bowl. that came out fine in both. the mangoes in the bowl was in focus and sharp on the 8100 but slightly blurry on the 9100. almost each and every time. Outside shots they are very similar, but overall, i'd give the 8100 a slight edge. The s9100 just didn't seem to hold up ever so slightly compared to the 8100.
3) I do LOVE the panorama shots on the s9100. ou can do 180 or 360 degree shots, but that isn't entirely accurate. there is a buffer bar on the screen and as you turn, it fills up. The 180 buffer is pretty accurate, but the 360 fills up at about 270 or so. I liked the 180 though as I could stand on the side of the ship and rotate along the side. Pictures came out wonderful except one that I must have jerked as the overlap wasn't quite seamless. just one out of a dozen or so.
4) I hate the new flash method. Before, the 8100 would automatically pop up the flash, even if it was in a bad location on the camera. I could deal with that. The 9100 you need to flip the switch on the side to pop up the flash and you have to manually push it down. Even if you need flash, the camera will tell you to raise the flash, but won't do it automatically. That is annoying.
5) Coming from the 8100, the shutter button was on the right of the setting dial knob. The 9100 has the shutter on the left of the knob and you have to reach your finger over a bit more. i hate that.
While i probably wouldn't have noticed all the flaws if i had just gotten the 9100, I had two L120's that I had tried prior to the s8100 (junk L120 BTW), and hated how the L120's performed. Out of say 100 shots, 10% were of use. I could take one shot and it come out fine, then 10 more of the same spot and same item and they all came out bad. Holding the s8100 next to the L120's was like night and day in quality. Thus i'm biased on the 8100's performance as I know how well it handles. The s9100 fell a bit flat to it. Still good, but not s8100 quality.
I asked the spouse if we should keep the 9100 and the reply was yes due to getting the extended warranty (the 8100 didn't). However, I will use the 8100 also when we need two or if I need a camera when I'm not at home.
for $199, its a good camera. i'd not spend $300 for this, but $199 i would and not look back. except on occasion. -
I was not happy with this camera for the price.
by Lexy30000 on May 26, 2012
Pros: Video camera is excellent. Ease of use and great stabilization.
Cons: Picture quality poor in low light situations. Image stability not good at all causing camera to sometimes not shoot at all. If you are not COMPLETELY still while shooting your subject will com out blurry and unrecognizable.
Summary: I purchased this camera because of the Nikon name. It was overall ok but for the price, it did not live up to my standards. I wouldn't recommend this ...

Summary: I've purchased this camera 3 months ago and after using only twice, I got an error message and the lens would not open. I contacted Nikon and was instructed to ship the camera to their repair center in N.Y. Every time I check the status online it shows on hold waiting for parts. I've contacted them a number of times and they keep giving me the run around. Since then I did an online search and found out that this is a common problem on these cameras - a manufacturing defect - and to make matters worse, the Nikon technical support will give you anything BUT support. Don't waste your money - for the same price you have better options.

It freezes.
by MarkNDark on December 21, 2011
Pros: Some photos are great, nice video also.
Cons: Unfortunatly this camera freezes, and the only way to un-freeze is to pull the battery out slightly for a re-boot. Very sad, since I paid $350 for my first Nikon camera and it is flawed. I googled and see many have this same problem.
Summary: Any suggestions?
