- Bottom Line:
- The Nikon D300s is a great camera, especially if you need the burst speed or slightly improved low-light focus, but if you don't care about video you might consider looking for a really good deal on a D300 and using what you save to splurge on a good lens.

The good: Outstanding performance for its class; excellent photo quality; solidly built; flexible custom settings architecture; video capture; onboard wireless flash controller; dual card slots.
The bad: Some annoying design and interface quirks; no significant improvements in high ISO noise performance.
The bottom line: The Nikon D300s is a great camera, especially if you need the burst speed or slightly improved low-light focus, but if you don't care about video you might consider looking for a really good deal on a D300 and using what you save to splurge on a good lens.

Fantastic still camera with few quirks
by talmy on November 12, 2010
Pros: Sturdy, generally good ergonomics, 100% viewfinder, great rear LCD display, two memory cards, fantastic battery life, works with old lenses.
Cons: Heavy, setting banks are awkward to use, virtual horizon seems tacked on and is single axis only, video is poor if you care about that feature
Summary: I replaced a D200 with the D300s this summer. I shoot mainly landscapes and was unhappy with the D200's battery life and poor operation with a GPS. I was ...
Summary: I replaced a D200 with the D300s this summer. I shoot mainly landscapes and was unhappy with the D200's battery life and poor operation with a GPS. I was concerned about the D300s noise at low ISO and color rendition but I found both to be better than the D200. Overall there was a general increase in quality and the better battery life (2 days on a charge as opposed to only a few hours) made the upgrade well worth it.
I must admit I don't know if the quality improvement can be totally attributed to the camera as I also upgraded my general purpose lens (16-85 VR replacing an 18-70) and improvements to post processing (Adobe CS5 and Aperature 3 replacing Adobe CS3) at about the same time. -

Summary: I recently upgraded from a Nikon D60. I took some great pictures with my D60, but after shooting a few weddings, I started to realize that I needed more control, speed, power and flexibility. The D300s delivered on all of these. With the D60 i could only get off 7-8 shots in continuous shooting mode before the buffer filled up and the shots begin to slow down from 4 shots per second to 1 shot per 1.5 seconds. The D300s shoots 7 per second with no slowdown at all. the buffer is rated for over 100 high resolution shots. I occasionally ran into situations during weddings where no flash was allowed during the ceremony. I could slow down the shutter and get blurry pictures, increase the aperture and/or increase the ISO and get grainy undesirable pictures. The D60 started to show noticeable grain at ISO 600. I have taken shots with the D300s at ISO 3200 with no grain. All in all, this is a great camera for anyone who wants great shots and upgrading from a D60, D90, D3000 etc. The learning curve on a camera such as the D300s is steep. There are NO automatic settings to fall back on. You have to know what shutter speed, ISO and aperture is and how to manipulate all three in harmony. If you have never owned a DSLR, you may want to start with an entry level camera like a D3000 or D5000. They take incredible pictures at a fraction of the cost and although the learning curve is the same for manual mode, you still have the AUTO mode to fall back on if your in a tight situation.

I think its a useless piece of junk

Commander Mode is nifty and easy to set up (wireless flash)

Shoots HD VideoCons: i don't see the point of the neck strap, its completely useless sometimes i even feel that the camera would fall if its let entirely on the neck strap's support.
Summary: I think its only for professionals but its not good for the use of beginner or amateurs.
