The good: Excellent photo quality; well-laid-out controls; interesting, user-friendly Guide mode; full manual controls in video capture.
The bad: Smallish viewfinder; slower than the competition; no bracketing.
The bottom line: A very good entry-level dSLR, the Nikon D3100 delivers excellent photo quality in a body that's streamlined for experienced photographers, but relatively unintimidating for the less advanced. Its only weakness is performance; though solid, it nevertheless lags behind the competition.
Pros: The camera operates much quieter and smoother than previous Nikon models. The focus-lock indicators in the viewfinder are more discreet with the focus-lock beep is much quieter and less and EXPEED 2 is right on the money with detection and adjustment
Cons: Would have loved to see more on-the-fly external camera adjustments similar to the D300. Some adjustments that are needed on the fly are only accessible within the menu.

Summary: Nikon has done an extraordinary job with offering top-level processing and image quality in a so-called beginners line DSLR. The camera has it's Guide function for rookies but produces rich and sharp photos that compete strongly with the D90 and frequently surpasses. The body is slimmer making it easier to shoot your shots with a steadier hand. Make sure if you are considering this camera that you are using all AF-S lenses due to the camera not having an internal focus motor. Some see this as a con, however, if you want to shoot with the sharpest lenses that work harmoniously with the newest technology, you should be shooting with all AF-S lenses. There are some professionals who shoot with non-AF-S lenses for special purposes and do not need the assistance that they offer but most shooters can use the extra hand with exposures, d-lighting, metering, etc....... A 9 out of 10 !!!!!!!
Pros: I SAW A RATING BY A VERY EXERIENCED DSLR USER ON YOU TUBE. HE SIDE BY SIDE COMPARED ISO SETTINGS AND OTHER SETTINGS ALONG WITH A HIGHER RATED AND PRICED DSLR THAT I WILL NOT MENTION FOR REASONS OF RESPECT. I PAID $580 TOTAL WITH KIT LENS.
Cons: BIGGEST CON IS LACK OF EXTERNAL MIC PORT. IMPORTANT FOR SERIOUS MOVIE MAKERS.
Summary: FOR PRICE GIVEN ITS QUALITY AND EASY TO UNDERSATAND AND USE OF THE CONTROLS, BEST DSLR FOR ENTRY LEVEL VIDEO OR SEMI PROS SHOOTING EITHER SINGLE PICS OR FULL VIDEOS.

Summary: I don't say this is an entirely bad camera. It is an average. I am satisfied with the pixels. While viewing the pictures there is a delay in the live view. Video making with this did not come out well. I am not too happy with my buy.
