The good: Strong performance; excellent image quality; low visual noise; simple modes for neophytes; robust burst mode.
The bad: Simplified controls sometimes clumsy to use; small viewfinder; no depth-of-field preview; only one set of custom parameters; raw-file editing/control software costs extra.
The bottom line: Performance and features that rival those of more expensive digital SLR cameras make the 6-megapixel Nikon D50 one of the best entry-level options.
Bargain-hunting digital-SLR consumers will find a few features missing from the D70s's array, including a 1/8,000-second top shutter speed, a depth-of-field preview, and a second command dial; also, the kit lens has about 25 percent less telephoto reach: 27mm to 82.5mm vs. 27mm to 105mm (35mm-camera equivalent). But improved image-processing algorithms give the junior Nikon SLR better noise characteristics at ISO settings up to 1600 and offer gentler treatment of highlights. Budding shutterbugs looking for fast operation coupled with useful features such as a robust burst mode, accurate exposure metering, and iTTL electronic flash control (both internal and external) will find a lot to like about this budget digital SLR contender.
Experienced photographers seeking a backup Nikon camera body might be better off spending a few hundred dollars more for the Nikon D70s. The D50's reliance on SD/MMC media instead of CompactFlash requires an investment in two memory card formats, and multiple differences in the control layout, including the absent subcommand dial, a cursor-pad function swap during playback, and a lack of backlighting for the control panel, complicate switching back and forth.

Great entry level digital SLR for the price
by shickernell on November 25, 2006
Pros: Great point and shoot modes with the option to go manual. Good clear photos
Cons: The included software is the bare minimum. The 28-80 lens is not my favorite.

Summary: I have had a few pocket size point and shoot cameras and all of my indoor shots were out of focus. The D50 solved that problem for me. The built in flash will light up subjects within 16-20 ft. The manual controls also allowed me to get better pics in less than perfect lighting. Spend a few bucks on faster lenses and you'll enjoy taking those birthday and holiday pics again!
when your ready to step up to the next Nikon, you can sell the body and keep your favorite lenses.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A professional quality camera for the SLR beginner.

Pros: Lots of point and shoot features.excellent when used with Nikon auto telephoto lenses.
Cons: For the professional, this camera is difficult to use In the manual modes. Can be frustrating for instants trying to capture depth of field. To do this the camera must be in the Manual mode.

Summary: the camera takes excellent photos in either mode,Auto/Manual, But is designed to do every thing for you. The camera menu offers several data option in jpeg format as well as raw data mode. An excellent camera all the way around. The camera does not take video, but does have a video cable. you could use it as a high resolution web cam for instants,or play back your photos directly on your computer, or TV using the cables that come with the camera. It has all of the point and shoot setting on the function dial of the camera.

Excellent for beginners and enthusiast
by sgtdisturbed47 on September 23, 2007
Pros: Easy to operate, great for beginners and enthusiasts, amazing image quality
Cons: Kit lens (28-80mm) is not meant for this camera. Viewfinder is a bit dark and small but perfectly useable.
Summary: I bought this camera a year ago, and a week later I bought a better lens (18-70mm). The 28-80mm kit lens is pure junk. There is a 1.5x crop ...
Summary: I bought this camera a year ago, and a week later I bought a better lens (18-70mm). The 28-80mm kit lens is pure junk. There is a 1.5x crop factor, so 28-80mm shows up as 42-120. You need to get an 18-55mm or 18-70mm in order to get wide shots at the budget level. The 28-80mm is designed for film Nikons, like the N55.
Now, as for the camera, it is perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike. A huge range of settings and the ease of use, not to mention the great image quality, makes this a perfect starter for those who are coming from using point and shoot digital cameras. It is built rugged, has a well-shaped, comfortable grip, and has plenty of buttons on the back for quick adjustments, most importantly, ISO, white balance, AF area and meter settings.
You could go for the D40, but if you have man-hands and don't want your pinky finger hanging off the bottom, go for the D50 instead. It's much more camera for only a little more money.
