The good: A dust-and-weather-sealed design distinguishes the Olympus OM-D E-M5 from the rest of the interchangeable-lens crowd, and its class-leading performance doesn't hurt, either. Plus, it's got an interesting, relatively streamlined shooting design.
The bad: The photo quality is solid, but not outstanding, especially if you shoot only JPEG.
The bottom line: If you're looking for something a lot better, faster, and more sophisticated than a point-and-shoot that can stand up to your adventures, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a great choice.

Stunning picture quality. Such a joy to carry around.

Pros: I shoot JPEGs and this camera doesn't disappoint. Colours are really natural. Skintones are probably the best I have seen right out of cameras (and I own quite a few different SLRs). Super speedy no-wait performance. AF speed is terrific.
Cons: Darn AF points or what they call "zones" can be a bit large. No 24P video. No AF confirmation in manual focusing.

Summary: I live in Australia and I was over in Melbourne on the weekend with my OM-D and chanced upon the Olympus stand at the local consumer photo show. Olympus in Australia was quite mad (I thought) to set up a massive photo studio with all the professional lights and so forth and did this thing called a "Photo Challenge" where they got members from the public to bring their FULL-FRAME SLRs to do a shoot-out with the OM-D. What I saw was simply the most stunning images from any non-full frame camera I had ever seen. Large 40x30" Epson prints (they used a 9900 model) were made from OM-D jpegs right out of camera with no added sharpening and the prints just took the audiences' breath away. It was quite funny to see the reaction from a lot of the folks who brought their Canon 5D, DII, Nikon D700 and even an D800E to do the 'shoot-out'. Most of them just became really silent when they were showed the comparison prints. And then the big coup came when the Olympus guy pointed out that the full-frame cameras were given the further advantage of being set to RAW whilst the OM-D prints were made with just JPEGs right out of the camera! I bet a lot of OM-Ds were sold through the Melbourne stores that day ;-) ( I think the OM-D they used mainly used the 12-50mm kit lens to compete against various fast aperture pro glass, which is even more astounding considering the cost of the kit lens)
CNET Australia even has a clip of the challenge I am talking about here with a comment from a rather surprised Nikon user:
http://www.cnet.com.au/olympus-om-d-versus-a-full-frame-camera-339338741.htm
So, I am not sure what the reviewer has to complain about the out-of-camera JPEG quality. It's seriously high-end if you ask me. If you think the default noise-filtering is too strong, go into the menu and either set "Noise Filter" to Low or even completely OFF. If you like, shoot RAW and make your choice later.
Finally I can't quite believe that they've managed to pack so much in so little space. Sure it isn't perfect (which camera is tell me?), but this must be the find of the season. I bought the kit with the 12-50mm and went out into the rain with full confidence. The so-called 5-axis stabiliser is quite stunning. I have been able to shoot at much lower speeds than my other cameras in low-light.
I just wished they had a lot more fast glass right now. Might have to buy some Panasonic lenses to be happy. I hope Olympus issues more big aperture lenses soon.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Olympus
- Part number: CNETOM-DE-M5WITH12-50SVR
- Description: Nostalgic in appearance, the Olympus E-M5 takes all the past engineering expertise of the Micro Four Thirds standard and overhauls it with enhanced features on the inside. The jewel in the crown of the E-M5 is its ingenious electronic viewfinder system. Unlike an optical VF, it lets you frame images and get creative with them too - controlling highlights and shadows, white balance, magnification and aspect before even taking the shot. The E-M5's incredible image quality owes a great deal to its 16-megapixel live MOS sensor, fully utilized by the powerful TruePic VI image processor. It gives you all the detail of 16-megapixel resolution, plus greatly reduced noise, high range of sensitivity, a wide dynamic range, rich gradation and accurate color reproduction. Team this up with the world's fast AF system with vastly improved functionality and you can look forward to incredible sharpness with greater control than ever before. The list of pioneering technological breakthroughs is truly extensive: yet another is the world's first 5-axis image stabilization: visible and controllable through the viewfinder, this sophisticated in-built mechanism compensates for every blur giving you razor-sharp stills and movies. This is one tough tool on the outside too: The magnesium alloy body has a dust- and splash-proof design that can handle some pretty rugged conditions.
