The good: Nice features, design for its price; 1GB of built-in storage; one-touch movie recording.
The bad: Soft, noisy photos above ISO 200; long shutter lag; ineffective image stabilization.
The bottom line: The Olympus SP-600UZ is easy on your wallet for a megazoom, but its photos and performance require a lot of compromise.

Just a couple of comments
by bobharris77 on October 4, 2010
Pros: Excellent photo and movie quality. Excellent audio quality.
Cons: I would prefer that it was a smaller and there are too many options, which sometimes requires too much scrolling to get to the one I want.

Summary: This seems to be an excellent product. I looked at quite a few different cameras in this price range and bought this one with the understanding that it could be returned if it was unsatisfactory. But I honestly cannot find any serious issues to complain about.
The review is wrong on a couple of points, BTW. The SP-600 uses 4 batteries, not 2 and you zoom in and out in movie mode, so long as you turn off the microphone.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

What happed to the manual features of SP-***UZ lines?
by jcforoly on November 18, 2010
Pros: Good camera for those rely on automatic features of digital photography.
Cons: SP-***UZ was supposedly a advance digital camera with a lots of manual capability. No more, I guess... SP-***UZ is now just a automated digital camera which is no longer distinguishable between cheap cameras from Canon and Knikon.

Olympus you have only slightly failed me.....
by jsnjay6 on October 7, 2010
Pros: This camera is amazing. I happen to own the sp-600 and i love the programmable auto mode. The auto mode does do very well in most cases and i have yet to explore the cameras artsy modes but I will post my revised review when such features are used.
Cons: This is where Olympus has failed. No full manual mode. If you need to do specific night shots while zoomed in there are settings that need to be manually adjusted such as shutter speed.
Summary: Bottom line is this is an excellent camera for the point and shoot category, and is only missing full manual mode. I would recommend this to the average user.

Amazing... Except for the batteries.
by IRTehDuckie on February 29, 2012
Pros: Amazingly detailed pictures, Epic zoom proportion.
Cons: It takes batteries. I absolutely hate the fact that it takes batteries, I don't know about anybody else, but mine eats batteries alive. Hubby says get the rechargeable batteries, but it doesn't matter, my camera will go through 4 batteries a week.
Summary: Its a really good camera, don't get me wrong. I love it and wouldn't change it for a different one, It's perfect for what I use it ...

Point and shooter wanted more of a challenge.
by SpcDee49 on December 26, 2011
Pros: Good quality photos. Easy to change options. The video quality is great. Sounds and video are good quality, you just have to stop the recording to zoom in or out and restart. I am impressed with the stabilization with full zoom and video.
Cons: No option to change shutter speed. It would be nice to have a setting where the shutter speed would be faster, even if you loose an option someplace else.
Lag time from shot to shot can be frustrating unless your in the multishot mode.Summary: Over all I am very happy with this camera. I am a point and shooter who wanted a little more challenge. It took me awhile of frustration to realize that ...
Summary: Over all I am very happy with this camera. I am a point and shooter who wanted a little more challenge. It took me awhile of frustration to realize that low lighting can cause more of a lag on the shutter speed. Lost several good photo ops the other night. I am playing with options to see if I can increase the shutter speed while keeping the picture quality. Taking photos outside in day light are turning out beautiful, but taking pictures of the active grandkids inside are a challenge. I am sure I just need to work with the settings more before they come over again.

Good entry level camera
by bandidow123 on August 21, 2011
Pros: 1. Nice size view screen
2. fairly easy to flip through modes
3. HELP button with good feaures
4. has that SLR feel when shooting pictures - for those that don't like shooting pictures with a "deck of cards"
styleof cameraCons: 1. Video mode - no zoom with audio, only zoom without audio (that sucks)
2. Lens cap falls off easily - won't stay on when lens is extended (that sucks) - do not bang your lens!
3. picture quality ok - I expected better
4. Hard time downloading pics toSummary: Good entry level camera. DOes the basics pretty well. I sometimes wish I had waited and did a little more research. It came on sale and I needed something NOW. ...
Summary: Good entry level camera. DOes the basics pretty well. I sometimes wish I had waited and did a little more research. It came on sale and I needed something NOW. Overall I am fairly happy with the unit. It has taken some amazing pictures, it does lack adaptability in some situations, but depending on what you are doing with the unit it works just fine. Definately isn't a CANON Rebel or or other High-Quality Digital SLR . . . but then again it isn't a $1000 camera either. Overall I am glad I bought it, but I might have held off if I had the time to do more research. I was looking for something a little more advanced. For the price - it is a good little unit!

Firmware crash ruined European vacation pics.
by WLHarrison on May 1, 2011
Pros: Easy to operate. Great zoom steadycam.
Cons: No shutter priority. Firmware crash while on vacation in Europe resulted in NO FONTS on menus, so unable to read menus. One-in-a-lifetime photos reverted to 640X480.

Summary: I bought this as a bridge camera for my trip to Europe. First day into trip, camera locked up, displayed NO FONTS on every page, so that I couldn't adjust anything because I couldn't read the menus. Reverted to 640X480 on all my photos. Contacted Olympus and will have to send in under warranty to be fixed. Very disappointed in camera. I should have stuck with my Exlim.

Summary: I have just taken back a Sony camcorder which I wasn't very happy with at all so I went to get money back and/or get an alternative. I thought it would mean the phone style types, the bloggie and similar but I found this so exchanged for it..
after the disappointment of last week when I bought the Sony with my hard earned money I am very pleased on first impressions.
much much better in every department (ok, perhaps not the sound) great video and great photos for my keen amateur hands. -

Great buy for the money!

Pros: 15X optical Zoom...built-in 1Gb memory...fast start-up time and fast picture process to next shot... four battery capacity that lasts very long even on alakline!

Summary: I bought this for a couple of reasons... 1. 15X zoom, i had a canon with 5x but it never seemed strong enough but with this Olympus I can sit in my beech chair and take great clear close shots of the wife kids in the surf without havinf to chase them to get a good shot. 2. the four battery capacity was very useful... it came with four alaklines in the box and I was able to shoot well over 200 pictures and they were still going strong. I just replaced them with four lithium and have taken over 300 pics including dozens of flash shots and they still show 50%+ charged. 3. The price I got this for $129 on a boxing week sale and there was nothing else like this quality of camera for the price anywhere. Last I have taken about 30 shots of the family in action playing tennis and they came out fantastic! I say Well worth the money for the features offered.
