The good: Decent image quality at low sensitivity; helpful low-light features.
The bad: Noisy at high sensitivity; distinct purple fringing; sluggish; burst and high-ISO modes only shoot at half-resolution or lower.
The bottom line: This small 10-megapixel shooter can produce great shots if the scene is well lit, but watch out for noise at about ISO 200.
The Stylus 1000's sturdy metal body has a gentle wedge shape, making the camera extremely comfortable for one-handed use. However, the tapered left side makes it even more awkward for left-handed users than most point-and-shoots. The controls are mostly flat buttons that are responsive under the thumb, but extremely similar in feel. It's easy to accidentally hit the menu button instead of the direction pad when reviewing your photos. The power and the image-stabilization buttons sit on either side of the shutter release, but they're recessed enough that you probably won't accidentally press them while shooting.
Though light on the manual controls, the Stylus 1000 has some very nice features. Like all Stylii, its metal body has rubber gaskets and seals to keep water and gunk out. You can't shoot underwater, but you can splash it without fear or hesitation. For low-light and action shots, the Stylus includes digital image stabilization and can shoot at as much as ISO 6,400, but images greater than ISO 1,600 are cut down to five megapixels. The camera lacks an autofocus light, but it does automatically increase the gain of its 2.5-inch screen when shooting in low light, making it easier to frame your shot. Besides some basic controls, such as exposure compensation, ISO, and white balance, it has 24 scene modes that let casual shooters set the camera for the type of shot they want. The camera also includes a 30fps VGA movie mode for shooting video clips.
The Stylus 1000 performed sluggishly in our tests, especially in dim light. It took only 1.7 seconds from power-on to first shot, but after that we endured a 3.3-second wait between shots without flash. That pause increased to an even 4 seconds with the onboard flash enabled. Shutter lag measured a respectable 0.7 second in bright light, increasing to 1.3 seconds in dim conditions. Burst mode could shoot at only half-resolution or less, but proved quite fast at 3.8fps.
Noise is the Stylus 1000's greatest weakness. It started to manifest at ISO 200 and became quite noticeable at ISO 400. At ISO 800 and 1,600, images suffered from a distinct, greenish-purple grain, and details became horribly softened. At the 5-megapixel settings of ISO 3,200 and 6,400, even coarse details were completely destroyed by noise.
However, at low ISO settings, the Stylus's 10-megapixel images were large and quite crisp, with fine details showing up clearly. We noticed distinct purple fringing on the edges of white objects and some slight barrel distortion at the lens's widest angle, but otherwise the camera's images looked very good.
The Olympus Stylus 1000 offers high-resolution images and a water-resistant metal body. Unfortunately, noise issues and slow performance mean poor photos in low light. Unless splashability is a major factor in your purchase, you might want to look at other 10-megapixel cameras. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 offers a great lens and tons of manual controls, while the Canon PowerShot SD900 stuffs its 10-megapixel sensor into a frame even smaller and sleeker than the Stylus 1000's.

Summary: This is the second Olympus camera I own and since I loved my 4 megapixel one, I've decided to buy Olympus again. Before purchase I compared the similar products at the stores and also got some feedback from my friends. Well, I was truly disappointed with Sony and Canon, plus ALL my friends always complemented my pictures taken with my previous Olympus camera on different trips or events. I almost bought Olympus 720 SW b/c it's water- and fallproof, but last minute decided to go for more megapixels. And I don't regret it.
First pros: I was delighted with quality of LCD, when zooming in on picture taken, it provided great detail (I was taking some pictures for a friend who's an interior designer student). It takes outstanding pictures with sufficient light, indoors, provides superior quality when taking pics of documents. I used it to take pics of anatomy plastic models (I'm in school) and it was great to "blow up" the picture to see every single detail. Original battery provides decent time, but I also bought an extra one (since the AA bateries are not an option) and I don't like to miss a shot just because the battery is dead. When I was on a trip recently I took a lot of outdoor pics, just make sure it's in appropriate mode.
Now cons: the auction mode in menu is quite strange because it automatically takes 3 shots but turns of the flash, and even though I tried to set the flash the setting wouldn't allow me to modify it. So I just changed it to portrait setting with micro feature and set flash and it worked better than the "auction mode". I also had to take 3-4 same pics in dim lighting just to make sure at least one will turn out good. The movie mode provides decent video quality but poor audio, but it's not a problem for me since I own IAUDIO 5XL with great voice recording quality. And yes, the NOISE! It's not as loud as they describe it!
Overall, it's a great point and shoot camera. And I know, since it's 10 megapixels it's a bit expensive than 7-8 ones but I bought a package including 1 Gig xd card, card reader, extra battery, tripod (which I used, it worked out great), the carrying case and protective film for LCD. So if subtract the cost of extras, I only paid maybe 30$ more for my camera than a 7-8 megapixels one. 10$ per 1 megapixel. I can deal with that.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: i love this camera. i take it absolutely everywhere i go and take about 100 pictures a day. the only problems i've had so far are that if you're trying to capture pictures quickly during an event, its close to impossible. thats what video is for though i suppose. another issue is taking pictures in low light. if u do the lighting edit on the camera it comes back very grainy. the other issue is its zoom. i used it this morning for a friend's daughter's 6th grade graduation and i couldn't get very close at all for the pictures. however you can crop them on the camera to be close and they look fine.
good things about the camera totally outweigh the bad for me so far. this camera takes amazing self portraits, portraits, party pictures, and family pictures. the pictures in bright sunlight are great and so are sunsets and poolside pics.
BUY THIS CAMERA! YOU'LL LOVE IT!
