Solid performer, ultra portable, go anywhere!
by BigBrownHand on November 8, 2008
Pros: Shock proof
Water proof
Big range of built-in shooting settings (all accessible via a simple dial)
Rugged.Cons: Limited to use only XD cards which are often double the price of other memory for the same capacity.

You can take it anywhere - because it is ultracompact. We often have it stuffed in our trouser pocket along with the pocket knife.
You can store it anywhere - because it is well-built and shock-proof. In particular, the lens and lens cap are somewhat protected by the casing and the lens cap is a lot more solid than most ultracompacts and compacts.
You can use it anywhere - because it is water-proof and snow-proof. Don't worry if you are in a tropical rainstorm, crossing a river or snorkelling. If you are toboganning or snow-boarding, this is just perfect to stick in the hip pocket of your ski gear.
And the camera comes with a large range of built-in settings that adjust for strong light (snow), blue filter (underwater), indoor lighting (incandescent, fluro), available light, etc. To get to these settings, just spin the dial and your last used setting is already selected.
Connecting camera to my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium) was simple plug-and-play. It is accessible via any TWAIN compatible software once connected. (I have yet to find a piece of software that did not access my Olympus automatically.)
I wished only that Olympus would go with a standard memory card.
(Note that on close-ups, the flash can be a bit bright and throws a fairly solid shadow behind the main subject. You can compensate by standing further away and then zooming in to soften the flash effect.)4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Dont buy this camera. I couldnt even believe it broke so fast. The irony is that water got in, & broke my camera lens. Only a few drops of water got in, so the lcd screen & everything still worked. I checked the whole camera looking for where the water could have leaked into, & it turns out the USB port hole slowly became misaligned. The leak proof seals only work when all the ports/holes/compartments on the camera are aligned. Even before it broke, the camera took forever to take. It's definitly not a "point & shoot." Also the suto focus is annoying since you cant choose what to focus on! Other than that, I really loved this camera. I mean all my friends were jealous of my underwater camera (:
Well, I bought it from walmart so I went to my local walmart looking for an exchange. I figured I would rather go to walmart than find a way to send it back to Olympus (have a one year warranty). I asked for an exchange, though the lady told me, "Many people have been returning underwater cameras, especially this model. I don't think you want an exchange."
So if you were looking to buy this camera, DONT!
I'm also looking for a new BETTER underwater camera that is more durable.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Worst camera I have owned.

Summary: This is absolutely the worst point and shoot we have ever owned. I purchased it because my wife tends to drop cameras and break them. I hope the happens soon with this one. The picture quality is terrible. It is way too slow. The auto focus is terrible. We recently went on a cruise with some family and had to transfer their pictures to our computer because ours were so bad. We stopped using it after the first day. We will most likely donate this and go back to Canon. I certainly will never buy another Olympus product.

Would never purchase another Olympus camera......
by gmaheu on June 15, 2009
Pros: Small, easy to use, the on/off slider is a nice feature, the alarm clock is also nice.
Cons: Is not as durable as they claim. Mine broke within 29 days.

Summary: I bought this camera because I intended on using it on a regular basis underwater and on hiking trips. It said that it was drop proof, freezeproof and waterproof. Not totally true. I did use the camera underwater several times which worked great but soon the camera picked up this black spot about the size of a pea that showed up on every image and every video. I sent in for warranty and they said that I would need to pay $101.85 to have this fixed. I complained stating that it should be under warranty but that didn't help. As far as Im concerned this camera is junk. Ill never purchase an Olympus product again.

DEAD after falling off dinner table
by mknwvs on July 12, 2011

Cons: NOT TOUGH or SHOCKPROOF......... Fell off dinner table about 4 feet high and hasn't turned on since.

Summary: Will never buy another Olympus "TOUGH" or SHOCKPROOF camera. I have the 1050SW, an okay everyday camera that I thought I could carry in my purse and use when I needed. Purchased at Costco for about $250 so therre was no extended warranty available (I will never buy electronics unless I can get an extended warranty now because of this) wasn't expecting it to last forever but thought I'd get a few good years out of it. I also thought it was suppossed to be "shockproof" so I was surprised when it went dead after it fell off the table. Thought maybe there was a little glitch and a quick fix, but I've gone to two camera shops and basically have been told to toss it and get as new one.

Summary: I borrowed this camera from a friend. In optimal settings, it produced "okay" pictures at best. Other than that, it took WAY too long to power up and the playback quality is awful. I was terrified when I saw the quality of the pictures on the camera, but once they were uploaded onto my computer, most of them were okay.
I guess it's pretty nifty that it's shockproof and waterproof, but I'd rather have quality over those features. -
Great camera for all those campers/hikers.
by KMO357 on July 26, 2010
Pros: Waterproof (Great underwater pics)
Shockproof (Dropped a few times and still works great)
Sliding thing to protect the lensCons: Very Bright Flash
little slow, but I got used to it

Summary: I love this camera. I go camping practically every 2 weeks and it's perfect. This is especially great for those wonderful mountain views. There are also some problems, though, but I found little ways to fix them, kinda.
1-The Zoom: When i'm close to an object and zoom in and take the pic, it gets really blurry. Try to move the camera as close to the object you can before zooming and the pic looks better.
2-The Blur: I used to keep the settings on panoramic, but the pics kept coming out blurry when the objects are close to each other. I them used the auto and turned off the flash. Then the pics came out better.
I can't find a way to fix the major slow dilemma, but you have to get used to it. Even though there were some bad parts, there are also some great ones.
1-Waterproof: I love this camera for the underwater pics. I go to the pool and they come out great. The only problem is you can't see the screen underwater, but they come out good at any angle, just the water needs to be clean.
2-Shockproof: The shock absorbency is great. I drop it a few times and still works. i just wish it could be more that 5 feet because i'm tall and normally doesn't carry the camera five feet and below.
3-The Sliding Thingy: This is great to protect the lens. The worst thing about it, though is that it can un-slid and turn on in my pocket, draining the battery. I got a little case for about $10 or less for the camera to stop this.
Overall this is great for those adventurers out there. I hope i get to go somewhere with beautiful waters to take exotic pics underwater and go to even more mountains to get the gorgeous views. I would get this camera any day. -
good camera, good for the water and snow
by scubbabubbles34 on June 28, 2010
Pros: it's overall a great camera. i don't know what happened with the other buyers. i've had it for a little over a year now and it's working properly. i've used it in the pool, the beach and the snow and i haven't had any problems with leaks.
Cons: it's kinda slow
pics aren't consistent, sometimes they're good sometimes they're horribleSummary: a great camera for a teenager that loves taking pictures and travels in different types of terrain

Very useful for snorkling and the beach, but too slow.
by LindaRu on September 6, 2009
Pros: My husband and I bought this camera so that I wouldn't have to worry about my Nikon D40x getting sand or salt water on it when we went to Mexico. It worked great for snorkling! I got some excellent pictures both underwater and on the beach!
Cons: There is so much shutter lag on this camera that it's not funny. You push the button, wait like...five seconds...and then the picture takes. If anything is moving, you totally miss your shot.
Summary: Ultimately, this camera works great for beach vacation or for hiking trips. I'm a klutz, and have dropped this camera several times and never had a problem with it ...
Summary: Ultimately, this camera works great for beach vacation or for hiking trips. I'm a klutz, and have dropped this camera several times and never had a problem with it breaking as a result. When in the ocean, if there's sand all over it, I just dunk it in seawater, and it works great. I've left it in my purse in the car, in cold and ridiculously hot weather, and it always works fine. It's fun to take into the pool and shoot pictures of kids swimming around.
If you AREN'T planning on using it for snorkling or the beach, however, there are far better cameras out there for just taking point-and-shoot pictures. All of my friends' Canon Powershots do a way better job than this thing does for taking pictures of casual things on land. By the time you snap a picture indoors, your subjects have already moved. The flash is slow and drains the battery quickly. You definitely need to charge the battery after about 150-200 shots, depending on whether or not you used the flash.
The colors were less vivid than what I prefer, no matter what setting I used, so I created a Lightroom setting called "Olympus 1050 Fixed" that takes the exposure down a little and ups the color saturation. After this, all the images taken with this camera ended up looking absolutely beautiful.
I do not regret this purchase. It works very well for what I bought it for--a beach vacation snorkling camera. However, I wouldn't recommend it for your day-to-day shooting, due to the shutter lag.
