Constant Companion!
by slashmand on June 8, 2010
Pros: Lots of options/functionality. Panorama options, digital zoom, low-light shots, video, underwater use, easy transfer to computer, light,
Cons: After one or two uses in a pool, the little icons on the settings dial disappeared, but I use the camera so much that I can easily find whatever settings I am after.
Summary: I take this with me a lot and am always glad. I like to shut the flash off because I prefer more natural lighting (there is a "Available Light" setting ...
Summary: I take this with me a lot and am always glad. I like to shut the flash off because I prefer more natural lighting (there is a "Available Light" setting which works well, although makes some shots grainy). I have also had a lot of fun with the panorama options. I have seen iPhones do a little better job with this lately, but I don't have one of those, so...
I have had this for a couple of years. I bought an extra battery from Microcenter and keep it charged and ready-to-go. One battery charge lasts a good amount of time anyway, but I like never having to worry when I'm out. In the couple of years I have used this, I have gone through one set of two batteries in this fashion, but I found them cheap enough that I had no problems replacing them.
I haven't played around with different image qualities. I am satisfied with whatever "normal" is because I use this mostly for sharing with my friends, but I have captured plenty of stunning shots which get oohs and ahhs from them.
I have dropped this a few times with no problems. It would be nice if the computer USB adapter were of a more common connector type. Because it isn't, I have to really be sure to keep track of the chord that came with the camera. If I lost it, however, it is easy to pop out the memory card and get the pixs to the computer in a different way. -
Be sure to get an extended warranty - hardly waterproof
by Yancy73 on April 1, 2010
Pros: Camera takes EXCELLENT day / sunlight photos and it fairly easy to use.
Cons: The waterproof components quit working after exactly one year and now the camera is giving me problems. Also, night photos are not great quality, but then again, I have yet to get a camera that can take decent night photos.
Summary: If you are considering purchasing this camera for the waterproof capabilities, I would rethink my decision.

Great for outdoor adventures
by Giddyupcupcake on January 24, 2010
Pros: Has functioned well as a sturdy camera during outdoor, athletic adventures. I've taken pictures with this camera during week-long cycling adventures, canoeing in the Everglades, snowshoeing in the Rockies and swimming in the ocean.
Cons: As good as it is in handling adverse conditions, the picture quality does not meet my standards for landscapes and portraits.
Summary: Great, worry-free camera for adverse conditions but may need a second camera for higher quality photos during normal activity.

Don't buy for Olympus image quality... or toughness...
by hsoj_porrah on May 11, 2009
Pros: OK price, presumably tough in many regards - the concept should be applauded - the execution....:(
Cons: Mediocre image, poor intuition/interpretation of programmed conditions, Screen broke within 2months in non-challenging conditions
Summary: Seems they forgot to toughen the screen. Camera survived skiing etc, but screen cracked while in my pocket at a restaurant. I guess the Tough is only as tough as ...
Summary: Seems they forgot to toughen the screen. Camera survived skiing etc, but screen cracked while in my pocket at a restaurant. I guess the Tough is only as tough as its weakest component. As stated elsewhere, image quality etc not good but passable if it lived up to its tough name. Pretty much does it's own thing (takes the picture it, not you, wants) so you have to learn to force it to do what you want with workarounds - not awfully convenient. Interface is painfully archaic (think space invaders) and use didnt come too intuitively. It also appears that some functions aren't availble if using an SD adaptor - something not clear until after you have bought the card and tried it out.
Waiting for a decent competitor -
Good All Around Snap Shot Camera
by MENDOBOB on February 23, 2009
Pros: Rugged, good picture quality, relatively easy to use
Cons: It would be nice to have an optical view finder for bright conditions
Summary: have had this camera for a out a year. The best thing is that I can take it hiking or kayaking without worrying. I would buy one again

If I had to do it again, I would get another camera.
by trinchinoo on December 9, 2008
Pros: Durability, you don't have to worry about it. Don't take it to the beach and get into the water.
Cons: Not a point and shoot camera. Constantly adjusting to get the right shot. Pictures are like a box of chocolates you never know what your going to get.
Summary: It's expensive and for cheaper you can get a better quality camera.

Good quality... But not all of the time.
by Sparklypie on November 16, 2008
Pros: Good quality pictures, waterproof and takes clear underwater pictures, shockproof so when you drop it it's fine ad different modes to help you along the way.
Cons: The photos often blur and it takes a while to focus. When using no flash, the quality is very poor. You'll get used to it but you'll never be in any of the photos as other people won't understand how to take a decent photo.
Summary: I took it on holiday with me and I was amazed at the digital waterproof camera which enabled me to take photos of everything that I did on holiday. I ...
Summary: I took it on holiday with me and I was amazed at the digital waterproof camera which enabled me to take photos of everything that I did on holiday. I was upset that when I finally got up on stage to do an embarrassing perfomance, my partner couldn't get the camera to focus and all of the photos of me were either blurred or very poor quality. With the flash on, it picked up everything in front of me which made me too dark to see and without the flash I was either blurred or 'speckled'. The battery runs out very easily as you have to spend minutes trying to focus the camera. For the money I think you could probably get a better quality camera but maybe it won't be waterproof.

Great Pictures Sometimes
by jefairchild on August 18, 2008
Pros: Clear Photos great in the dark. Very cool for underwater or just around the water. Stylish Easy to use
Cons: Not always clear underwater. Zoom is horrible. Slow speed even in sports mode. Battery is horrible even if you dont use the camera you have to charge it every few days
Summary: Decent Camera my battery was done for after 3 mos. So i returned it and am going to upgrade. Buy it somewhere with an easy return policy so you can ...

Good everyday use camera
by Kapaa on July 2, 2008

Summary: The camera overall is great. Good in and out of the water but it's good for only 1 hour in water depths of 10 feet which isnt a long time in the ocean. It's small so thats a good and bad thing. But overall I love it. Love the many features. The menu is kind of confusing and you can access features only in certain modes. If you have the cash buy the 1030 but the 850 is good for an every day use camera. Esp if you live in hawaii!!
