As a tough device, it wins. As a camera, it fails
by consumerfriendly on June 5, 2010
Pros: Tough, will take a beating and doesn't miss a beat underwater. 14 megapixels. HD video. Ease of use.
Cons: Very poor picture quality. Feels weak and flimsy for a supposed "tough" camera. Some features plain don't work. Blurry pictures a near constant occasion.
Summary: .As a tough device, it wins. As a camera, it fails. Simply doesn't not take nice pictures and is a downgrade from the old 1030 SW.

As Olympus claims, these things will take a beating and it's a handy feature that you can take it anywhere, even underwater, and not really have to worry about it. The toughness of this camera is by far its main draw. However, its got a plastic, flimsy feeling body that does not instill peace of mind. It does not feel sturdy in your hand, unlike its 8000, 8010, and 1030 SW series metal body brothers. The buttons as well feel cheaply put together.
While it is 14 megapixels, there are way better cameras out there if you're interested in nice looking pictures. This camera cannot take a good picture at night, dusk, or in limited lighting to save itself and if anything is moving or you don't have the steadiest hand, your picture will be blurry. I've had this camera for three months and after weeks of frustration I'm fed up with trying to get a good picture around sunset.
The panorama automatic/manual feature does not work. Period. In the automatic mode you'll find yourself chasing that little dot well beyond where you should have to and should you somehow miraculously be able to accomplish getting it in the right spot, chances are the camera will not splice the pictures right. This feature is simply taking up space.
Unless you're a statue and everything is well lit you're not getting a good picture. I've ended up at times taking nearly 10 pictures with someone in a pose and maybe gotten one nice picture. Stands don't help much either.
The bottom-line is that you would be wasting your money with this. If you want a tough camera, I've heard good things about the Stylus Tough 8010 and I loved my Olympus 1030 SW. But this... seems like it was made very cheaply. I'd recommend staying far away.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lousy camera!
by cannonlee on October 6, 2011
Pros: There are no pros.
Cons: We took this on a camping trip. By the time we realized it didn't work, it was too late to do anything about it. I agree, it's tough but it doesn't help if it never works. We liked our prior Olympus, because it was tough too, but in retrospect we realize
Summary: Not worth the effort.
