The good: The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is water-, dust-, freeze-, shock-, and crushproof; has fast shooting performance for its class; and has a fast lens with the capability to add on converter lenses for more shooting flexibility.
The bad: The TG-1 iHS has some minor design issues, such as a proprietary charging cable, that might turn some buyers off.
The bottom line: The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS combines a bright lens, a high-sensitivity, high-speed sensor, and some nice extras to make it a top rugged compact camera.

Excellent tough camera.

Summary: I have had this camera over a month. I pre-ordered and got the camera a few days ahead of the release date. Right out of the box I liked the camera but wanted to wait till after a trip to Disney to really see how it preformed. I shoot almost everything with pro-level Canon bodies and L series lenses but wanted something I could carry around on vacation without the fear of rain on bumps damaging the camera. This thing did great. The first two days we walked around in Hurricane Debbie and the rain never bothered the camera. I even got some cool shots because I did not care about the camera getting wet. On the third day my daughter was in the pool with a bunch of dance friends (They were there to dance in Dance The World for Disney). The kids had a great time taking pictures in the pool. When we got back to the room I dried the outside and checked under the seals and nothing. Completely dry under both doors. We put the pictures on my MacBook and the underwater pictures were great.
During the main dance event I did shoot with my high end Canon DSLR. Later in the week they repeated the same number on a different stage so I decided to play with this little gem during that performance. All I can say is WOW. I put the camera in high-speed mode and it froze the dancers. The picture is a bit flat but hay it is a tough camera what do you want.
Latter in the night I decided to try the fireworks setting out shooting the show over Cinderella's castle. Worked fantastic and gave some nice shots.
I do have one complaint and that is I would like full control over shutter speed and aperture. In a couple of cases to get the camera to choose a higher aperture I turned the ISO up. I would like to be able to use my own experience in some situations to tell the camera what is best.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Audio too poor to function as a video camera
by xiong_mao on May 5, 2013
Pros: Has different functions to change the image
Cons: - Slow, laggy at times
- Loud annoying clicking noise when recording, even worse when zooming in the record function
- VERY easy to damage/ scratch despite being 'tough'...Summary: Would not recommend this camera, unimpressed and a waste of money. Do not buy

Don't buy this camera video has horrible ticking noise!
by diccarlson on March 25, 2013
Pros: Takes nice pictures
Cons: Holy moley! You can't take video without a horrible ticking noise in the video. Trust me you can't fix it and Olympus won't take it back past the return date. The camera is not usable for video at all! They didn't even fix the TG 2.
Summary: Buy any other camera - you'll be better off.

Perfect, until it met sand

Summary: Bought the camera for the family cruise to the Bahamas this week, and it was perfect until we got to the beach. Within the first hour, the shutter button started sticking, then all the other buttons did as well, sand that got in between them had dug themselves so far into the camera that I couldn't turn the camera off. My battery drained and when I tried to unlock the port cover it wouldn't open! The battery and SD card covers won't open either, my husband is still trying to figure out a way to get it off so I can take the the SD card full of memories out before I turn it in for a refund/replacement.

I have 2 other rugged cams but this is the best.
by EJRay on December 11, 2012
Pros: This cam has some great features. The dog face recognition and locking focus point are very handy. I have a 3D TV so I like the 3D photo feature. The OLED display is great. Only compact cam that I can us a polorizing filter with.
Cons: This cam only shoots in 4x3 or 16x9. If you want to print a 4x6 you have to crop it. The 3D photos can only be viewed from the camera connected to the TV. You can't save them to a USB drive.

Summary: Great cam for rugged use as well as general use. I like to attach it to the outside top of my Jeep windshield to capture off road adventures and general driving. The GPS works well for that. Although pricy I feel the cam is well worth it. I do wish it had a remote though.

They finally made a camera for me!
by garbidz2 on November 16, 2012
Pros: Rapid, excellent handling, picture quality good, rugged, IdiotAuto mode very practical, face focus snappy, works with Eye-Fi card, rugged.
Cons: Why not a micro USB cable?

I have been impressed by the ease of use and the speed of this camera. A real point-and-shoot, especially in the iAuto mode. I have not been shooting in candlelight nor have I done any serious attempts at video so I do not say anything about those subjects. In good light the picture quality is sufficient at least for net images. The in-camera processing seems to be so about right.
In short, I am very happy with this little camera. It surpassed my expectations by a great margin.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Olympus
- Part number: TG-1 iHS
- Description: This tough model features ultra-bright, high-speed f2.0 lens on a tough camera allowing you to capture dramatically better images in low-light and fast action situations than any other rugged model currently on the market. The combination of durability and outstanding image quality makes it possible to shoot in even the harshest of conditions. Just imagine: capture beautiful underwater scenes and aquatic life, snap photos of triumphant arrivals to dusk-lit peaks, and record your ride down the rapids in dazzling 1080p Full HD video. The possibilities are truly endless. The TG-1 iHS is the rugged camera on the market to include an ultra-bright, high-speed f2.0 lens so you can capture scenes that were previously "impossible" with a point and shoot. This lens strengthens the camera's shooting capabilities making high-quality images and blazing fast shutter speeds possible even when a flash cannot be used or when shooting fast action or in low light.
