- Though we still really like Panasonic's GF series, there are several trade-offs to take into account before you buy the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2. Its raw-format images look extremely good, but JPEG shooters looking for best-possible photo quality may get frustrated by image artifacts. And while lots of photographers will appreciate its relatively compact but functional design and zippy performance--though still not for action shooting--there's nothing special about its feature set, including underpowered video capture.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 (with 14mm lens, Red) price range: $399.00 - $699.95

The good: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 delivers excellent performance for its class, in a relatively compact, comfortable design with a streamlined, usable touch-screen interface implementation.
The bad: Panasonic's JPEG processing remains subpar for this class of camera, and the GF2's inability to lock the focus area from accidental screen presses--a flaw of all the company's touch-screen ILCs--remains a huge point of frustration. It also has a disappointingly banal feature set, including a lack of manual controls during video capture. Also, an EVF costs extra, and the battery doesn't last very long.

Me: Somewhat amateur photographer who enjoys macro photography, portraits, and taking pictures and videos at concerts.
My Camera: Small enough to go in a pocket or purse, something versatile, long battery life, simple enough that I will *think* I have it figured out after an hour of having it, higher quality than an everyday point and shoot, halfway affordable, etc.
The GF2:
Well, so far it's meeting just about every requirement I had. Within 10 minutes of holding it in my hands (without reading a manual!), I was taking pictures that already far surpassed anything my ol' point n' shoot could do. One of my favorite things about this camera is the auto-focus touch screen and touch to shoot feature. Considering it's "auto focus," it does a relatively decent job about figuring out what you want to focus on. That aside, it's just down right cool to be able to touch the screen and take a picture!
So far, I've taken my camera out to a concert, shot inside and outside macro photos, taken self portraits, and took it around to shoot some buildings in my little down town area. Here's what I've learned...
Manual focus is awesome, and pictures taken with manual focus look infinitely better. However, I now see what the big deal about a camera not having an EVF (Electronic View Finder) built in is. The LCD works relatively well, but EVF would definitely improve shooting.
There is a built in zoom feature - sort of... You get the choice of 2x or 4x, and to zoom at all, you have to go into a whole array of menus to find it. In fact, I didn't find where the zoom was until about an hour ago. Needless to say... it's pretty useless for on the fly zooming, which is unfortunate in numerous scenarios. (Yes I am aware they make true lenses for this... I have one on the way actually.)
It is easy as pie to take this camera absolutely anywhere. Even with the 14mm lens attached, it still fits in my coat pocket! Awesome.
At concerts, without a zoom, photos still turn out pretty nice if you are directly against the stage. The camera holds up very well (remember - I'm comparing this to point n' shoots) in low light, and it captures stage lighting so well, that I never even had to turn the flash on. I've discovered that concerts are not the place to attempt using manual focus, as people are moving around far too much for you to be able to get anything in focus quick enough.
As for videos: The stereo sound quality is quite high, all things considered. For some reason, they placed the mic on the back of the camera, which I don't like, since most subjects that I'm filming tend to be in front of the lens! And for video quality, well, I couldn't honestly speak for it. I took a couple of videos before I realized that the manual focus mode for video-ing was on, which explains the poor focus in all of them! Oops.
You may have noticed I mentioned battery life in the pros. I was amazed. The battery life exceeded that of the point n' shoot I'd been using by a long shot. After using it for pretty much 4 straight hours (combo of photos and video) and filling up at 16gb memory card with excess of 700 photos, I still had 2 out of 3 bars of battery life.
Portrait photos and candid photos are so much more professional looking. Maybe not to somebody who has a true dSLR, but for the everyday person who just likes a candid photo here and there, this is awesome. There is a dedicated button that allows you to dictate how soft and in focus the background is as well. Works wonderfully.
So, for those looking for the tl;dr (too long; didn't read) version:
If you're thinking about upgrading from a point n' shoot - do it! You could get a dSLR for about the same price, but you get rid of the compactness. For the same price, you get something that you can take with you easily everywhere, you get quality that FAR surpasses any point n' shoot, and you still get the ability to pick and choose your lens.
If you own a dSLR - well, I don't have anything to compare to.
My opinion: I love it and can't put it down. Thumbs up to Panasonic and recommendation from me!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Four Star Performance

Pros: almost dslr-like output, retro design but will look better if the knob of gf1 was retained, usable touch screen, solid body
Cons: expensive lenses, battery grip too small, poor lowlight capability
Summary: Highly recommended for street photography, hot shoe accepts remote triggers although you have to try what brand will fit in,one of the best cameras that I have ever owned

Summary: Outstanding little camera with some baffing flaws. Really quick operation in every aspects, including AF and handling via touch-screen. It has excellent image quality in RAW but only moderate performance in jpegs (not bad at all). The low-light performance is poor compared to Olympus because of the lack of in-body stabilisation and worse ISO performance. ISO is good up to 400, acceptable at 800, but at 1600 it is less contrasty and less colorful, with some visible NR artefacts. However, with a good NR software (Lightroom, Noise Ninja) you can get acceptable result from RAW at 1600. However, with the 20mm / f1.7 lens or with the not-yet-released but announced 25/1.4 you probably won't have any situations that needed higher than ISO 800.
The lack of flash compensation and 2nd curtain flash sync is simply nonsense (GF1 has it).
But you can bend back the flash when opened and direct its light towards the ceiling. You can achive much more pleasant result than flashing directly to the subject (or sometimes ever better than not using flash at all). This is a pleasant feature (which GF1 does not have), but in most cases ISO has to be boosted up to 400 to get statisfying result.
Buy it, if you want
-very little size
-good handling
-quick response
-good image qualty
-interchangeable lens
Don't buy, if you want
-good low-light performance
-in-body image stabilisation
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Panasonic
- Part number: DMC-GF2CR
- Description: The DMC-GF2 is a small and light digital interchangeable lens camera with built-in flash, featuring a touch-screen operation. While shooting, you can operate the auto focus and shutter release at the same time with just a touch. While playing back, you can quickly select an image to view by scrolling images. In the iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, 7 detection functions work automatically and simultaneously to optimize your settings, making it easier than ever to take beautiful images every time. The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor offers the best of both worlds - the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. The Venus engine FHD features advanced signal processing capabilities in both photo and movie recording. With the advanced noise reduction system, you can capture beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels. The DMC-GF2 also features accurate, fast contrast AF system. The DMC-GF2 can record full-HD 1920 x 1080 movies in AVCHD format with high sound quality of Dolby Digital Stereo Creator. A dedicated button on the top lets you instantly start recording movies without any having to make any extra settings. The touch AF in movie recording lets you enjoy professional-like rack focusing. The DMC-GF2 can save a frame of movie as photo during playback. With the video divide function, you can divide a single video into two parts using only the camera. The DMC-GF2 features the My Color mode with a total of 8 preset modes, including the cinema mode which gives the movie cinema-like gradation. In iA mode and the My Color mode, the range of defocus can be adjusted by just moving the slider with your finger. The DMC-GF2 provides a total of 17 scene modes, and most of these modes can be used when shooting movies too. With the full-time live view function, you can see how these settings will affect the images before they shoot, which makes it easier to capture the exact mood or atmosphere desired.
