The good: Excellent video quality; articulating display with generally good touch-screen interface; variable frame-rate movie mode.
The bad: Annoying AVCHD-imposed limitations for video; no way to lock AF area on touch screen; middling battery life.
The bottom line: It's speedy, feature-packed, and an excellent ILC for shooting video, but to consistently get really good photos out of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 requires shooting raw.

Summary: I've been happily using Panasonic DSLRs, superzooms, and now 4/3rd and micro 4/3 cameras for some years, and I'm well aware of their previous limitations, especially noise at high ISO settings and slower focusing than DSLRS. The GH2 conquers those problems. I took the GH2 to East Africa for three weeks, with 14-140 and 100-300 lenses, and the results are spectacular: animals, birds, street shooting, video-all what I wanted from this outfit. Noise is noticeably lower than previous Panasonics. Focus locks on quickly. Burst shooting is more than adequate for all but sports photographers. The body's size and light weight make it a pleasure to use, and the controls are where they should be. Switching from still mode to video mode and back is quick and certain. I've never enjoyed using any camera as much as the GH2, and II've used a wide variety, from Box Brownies as a kid through Leicas, Rolleis, and Hasselbalds.

Excellent video, very good stills, the future of ILCs?
by John_M_Flores on February 1, 2011
Pros: Compact size
Quiet shutter
Light weight
Video is excellent
20mm F1.7 lens is excellent
EVF is very good
Using manual focus lenses is very good
ISO1600 is clean
Touchscreen focus and shoot is neat - getting interesting shots from it.Cons: low light performance not on par with the best (i.e., Pentax K-5)
2.5mm mic socket is a PITA (Dear Panasonic, most of the world is 3.5mm)
No monitoring of audio
No intervalometer
Colors are a little "plastic"/oversaturatedSummary: I'm a Pentax shooter that was very tempted by the new K-5, particularly it's low light performance and dynamic range. But I'm getting more into video, and ...
Summary: I'm a Pentax shooter that was very tempted by the new K-5, particularly it's low light performance and dynamic range. But I'm getting more into video, and decided to sacrifice a little still performance for the best video on the market. I'm not disappointed. The video is drool-worthy. And the stills? They've been a pleasant surprise; on par with my K20d and a step behind the newer Pentax K-x (esp in terms of low light).
The fact is, all dSLRs and ILC/System cameras made in the last 5 years are capable of stunning images....in good light. The difference between the best and the has-beens can be seen in challenging light situations - low light, high contrast, etc... And so it is with the GH2 - great in good light, ok in challenging light, and left behind by the best in candlelight. Still, if you struggle to take a good photo with this camera, consider photography lessons before blaming the gear LOL.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Panasonic
- Part number: CNETPanasonicLumixDMC-GH2black-14-140mmlens
- Description: The DMC-GH2 boasts its high performance to make the photographic experience even more comfortable and fun. It features the world's fastest level light speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by doubling the drive speed from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second. Not only the accuracy but also the speed excels by far than the high-end DSLRs with phase difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in the DMC-GH2. Combined with the touch AF control, setting and focusing at the subject is incredibly easy and quick, never missing the spur-of-the-moment. Panasonic also refined its comprehensive digital imaging technologies for every camera of Lumix G micro system to raise the level of image quality that rivals or even surpasses D-SLR cameras. The developed 16.05-megapixel multi-aspect live MOS sensor adopts the high speed digital ?Maicovicon. In addition to the high speed, which is an advantage of the CMOS sensor, Panasonic adds its original pixel mix technology. A dedicated process exclusively for ?Maicovicon of the DMC-GH2 is developed by applying the top-class high performance transistor and its interconnection process needed for the high speed operation of digital circuit to make low-noise photodiode and transistor with reduced wiring to achieve both high resolution and high aperture-ratio as the DMC-GH1.
