Camera that does it all in a rugged setup

Waterproof / Shockproof

Ease of UseCons: Bundled Applications are sub-par and lacks some Mac Support
Lack of applications that support AVCHD Lite

Summary: I bought this camera specifically for my trip to Hawaii. I was not disappointed. I took this camera everywhere from the summit of Diamondhead to Hanauma Bay. Both video and pictures taken with this camera were absolutely stunning. I used the iA (Intelligent Auto) function most of the time and it's pretty obvious where I didn't. The feature is really good at figuring out the best exposure for the situation. The video recording was just as great. One cool feature with the video recording was the built-in LED light that turns on when in low light conditions and off when light conditions are optimal. So many things amazed me about this camera that the only thing I wish it had was a phone function. I have photos posted on my picasaweb page (zsoldier) (Hawaii 2009) and some videos on my youtube site (exzsoldier) taken with this camera that you can view as reference to have a better idea of what this camera is capable of.

Unbelievable!
by dow317 on January 5, 2010
Pros: Took good pictures for the little time it worked.
Cons: Isn't mildly waterproof or resistant. Panasonic has the worst customer support or service.

Summary: I hate the fact that I bought a $400 waterproof camera for travel and it didn't even last 2 months. The camera got a little wet while taking pictures at a pool, nowhere near it's 3M rating. The camera completely shorted out. When I had the camera sent back to the manufacturer for repair, they refused to service it and didn't care that I didn't take it anywhere near the 3M depth rating. Don't market a rugged waterproof camera if it's only intended for rain! They refused to admit that it was a product defect and left me hanging high and wet. Futhermore the extended warranty from Fry's electronics where I bought it was even more disappointing as they too informed me that they wouldn't honor their warranty if the manufacturer wouldn't. Both companies are deceptive. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere because this camera is not worth the money or hassle.

not waterproof or alble to handle heat in the tropics
by sueneill on November 11, 2010
Pros: The concept is good but does not work. It looks good too but not of much use if it won't work.
Cons: My first one failed in one foot of water - it leaked right through the camera. Panasonic would not replace but the dealer did. The replacement is even worse. It keeps going to system error and asks to be shut down. The flash will not work.
Summary: I have 3 Panasonic Lumix cameras .. the cheapest one is the best.

NOT Waterproof
by JasonHanley on September 25, 2010
Pros: Good pictures and great HD video.
Cons: Died after several snorkeling trips. No visible water in any of the compartments, but clearly the death was water-related.
Summary: Many other reviews (check DMC-FT1 too -- same camera) have noted dead camera after minimal water use.
Do not buy this if you plan to take it underwater.Summary: Many other reviews (check DMC-FT1 too -- same camera) have noted dead camera after minimal water use.

Good pictures, poor waterproofing
by cparker83 on May 19, 2010
Pros: The camera took great pictures and even better video. Didn't have to worry about bumping it around or taking it out in the snow.
Cons: Water leaked in and killed the camera

Summary: In my opinion this camera took great pictures and video (compared to what I upgraded from), and was very user friendly with lots of fun features. I really loved this camera until it died 2 days into an 8 day trip. Water managed to leak in and it died. Needless to say I was not happy. I had however had the camera in the water previously and didn't have any problems, and took great underwater pictures. I have been impressed with Panasonic as they have exchanged my camera, no problem, and are actually sending me a newer model (hopefully one that will stand do what it's made to do), and the exchange process only took 2 weeks (including shipping to and from).

Beware of purchase!

Summary: I Purchased the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 on 02/3/10 along with the Panasonic marine camera case. One of the main reasons for purchasing the Lumix DMC-TS1 was the "waterproof" camera itself. I thought in the seemingly rare case that the marine housing were to leak the camera itself would be "waterproof". I thought I had a good back up plan. However on a shore dive (only the third vacation of using the Panasonic camera and housing), the housing leaked allowing water in the case. The shore dive was fairly shallow, no greater than 30 feet.
When I returned to the resort from the dive, I quickly removed the camera from the housing that was 1/2 full of water. I rinsed the camera off with tap water to rid the salt water. I let the camera air out for 24 hours before reassessing. I expected the camera to turn on, when it failed to turn on I was shocked. This is the first time the camera ever came in contact with water and it was while it was in the marine housing. My brother has a Canon that accidently got wet when his housing leaked and it still works, and it is not advertised as being a "waterproof" camera.
So I have two failed pieces of equipment from Panasonic each costing over $200 dollars. It happens to be 3 weeks over the year warranty . I have the wonderful opportunity of mailing in the defective equipment ( at my cost) and for $45 I can have their technician look at it. After it has been assessed , a repair fee will be given and thankfully I can apply the $45 dollars to the repair fee.
I have a Sealife camera and marine casing that has never leaked over the years of use. If you are planning on taking pictures while diving, you might want to consider other cameras.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Panasonic
- Part number: DMC-TS1D
- Description: The camera body is waterproof to 3m. It's dustproof too, so you don't have to worry about dust or sand getting inside. And it has passed drop tests at a height of about 1.5m. This is one tough little camera that you can take wherever action takes you. The TS1 records HD motion images with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. It uses the AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264) format, via AVCHD Lite which stores less data than other formats and thus lets you shoot more minutes of HD motion images before running out of memory. Just set the camera to iA mode, aim and shoot. The camera does the rest for you. It automatically sets the optimal mode for the shooting situation, and helps correct blurring, focus, and brightness problems. It also activates the Face Recognition function, which finds familiar faces in a group of people and captures them in a clear focus and with proper exposure. A retracting lens with folding optics is used in this 4.6x zoom lens system, which lets you take shots from the 28mm wide-angle to 129mm telephoto. This gives you the flexibility for virtually any shooting situation - even underwater shots, where the angle of view is naturally narrowed, or when you just want to fill the frame with your subject.
