The camera I've been waiting for has finally arrived
by Rainy99 on March 29, 2010
Pros: 12-16x zoom, Excellent Auto mode, 720p AVCHD and JPEG HD, 16x9 pics that are not cropped 4x3. Great viewing on Panasonic Viera device via SD card slot. Oh yeah, geotagging is very cool.
Cons: AVCHD is a pain to work with on a Mac, though iMovie 9 (8.0.3) will import AVCHD but converts to a quicktime format.

Summary: I love this camera. I am strictly a casual point-and-shoot user and have gone through 3 or 4 digital cameras from the bulky but excellent Canon S1 to the compact, rugged and mediocre Olympus Stylus 790SW. I've gladly given up the bombproof ruggedness of the Olympus for the features of the DMC-ZS7. The 12x optical zoom increases to 16x iZoom with little or no degradation and works for both photos and video. For my requirements the quality of both photos and 720p HD movies is excellent. I also bought a Panasonic Blu-Ray player with SD card slot that plays both photos and AVCHD video. Since we are using the the TV for playback the quality of 16x9 photos is really important. There is a good explanation on panasonic.net, but basically on the ZS7 a 16x9 aspect ratio is not a cropped 4x3 photo and it shows. Playback on our HDTV is simply stunning. No need for the family to huddle in front of a computer anymore. For taking pics I've mostly set the mode on Auto and let it do it's thing with very nice results. The number of options in Scenes mode is limited but the basics are there (snow/beach/landscape/etc). It also has a fully manual mode which I don't think I will ever use. I guess the ZS-3 got slammed for not having it so they included it in the ZS-7. I highly recommend this camera.

exceptional value--great zoom--sharp pictures

THE compact digital camera with everything!
by labdog1957 on November 23, 2010
Pros: 1. Picture quality is fantastic. 2. Feature-rich from fully auto to custom manual settings. 3. Scene options fit almost any situation. 4. Wide angle and Zoom is incredible; from 25 -300mm! 5. GPS feature gives you pinpoint location records.
Cons: The battery / memory card cover is flimsy. In fact, the lock mechanism can come apart if you apply too much pressure so you have to be very careful about changing the battery or the compact flash card.

Summary: I use to only take pictures on special occasions. Now since I have the Panasonic Lumix ZS7 I use it almost every day. It has incredible features that have put the fun back into taking pictures. The zoom has unbelievable distance not to mention the super wide-angle at the low end. That 25mm wide-angle means no more having everybody squeeze together and stand sideways for a group photo. The zoom allowed me to take just the torch of the Statue of Liberty from the top of the Empire State building several miles away! Not only that, using a tripod I have pictures of the Moon and planets that show detail like I've only seen in telescopes. The macro close-ups of flowers and butterflies have detail and color that is not only in focus but has tremendous detail. The pre-set Scene feature covers just about any situation from sunsets to the beach to an indoor party to a candle-lit wedding. The GPS feature when used with Google Earth shows me the exact location of my picture whether it was taken in the front yard or around the swimming pool in the back. The ability to set shutter speeds, aperture, and exposure manually is a bonus that has really broadened my picture taking skills. And since I can save up to three different custom settings it quickly allows me to have a just what I need when I need it. Of course the Intelligent Auto and the Program AE mode make everything automatic so even if all you want to do is point and shoot the pictures will turn out great. There is a long list of features and even after owning it for 4 months I have yet to try them all out. Some of the ones I enjoy the most are the trip picture organizer that saves and arranges the pictures based on when you start and end your trip, the face recognition feature that learns who you take pictures of the most so that focus priority and color balance is optimized for those people, What about video? There are 3 different high definition settings that give you complete flexibility to capture video recordings that will play on the camera, your PC, or the big screen TV. Video recordings can also be zoomed just like a standard video camera which is not something you find on most compact digital cameras on the market today. The camera can also use the new ultra-high capacity SDXC flash cards which can store pictures and video all the way up to 64 gigs! The software program that comes with the camera is pretty easy to use and includes good instructions. Though not as feature-rich as Photoshop Elements or as easy to use as I-Photo you can still download and organize your pictures as well as make albums, slideshows, and prints. Bottom-line: I love this camera and cannot imagine enjoying and using any other compact digital camera as much as I do the Panasonic Lumix ZS7.

Almost perfect travel camera
by stevespears1 on August 4, 2010
Pros: 1. Consistently takes perfect pictures in iA setting. 2. Realistic skin tones, not dry like a lot of other digital cameras. 3. High quality zoom lens with terrific range. 4. Very good anti-shake to make #3 usable. Easy to use video. 5. 3" LCD.
Cons: 1. Needs a viewfinder. LCD is useless in sunlight. 2. If you have to use an LCD to compose your pictures, at least make it hinged so you can avoid the glare from the sun. 3. GPS needs an external switch so you don't have to go thru menus.
Summary: I think its a great little camera. I can work around the cons above.

Great features for stills, video, GPS and Apple support
by russatcnet on June 23, 2010
Pros: I wanted a camera that could take very high resolution stills, Motion imagery, and GPS. This camera offers it all. It's small as well. I also needed a camera that is compatible with Apple Mac computers/software. This camera has it.
Cons: .. not sure I've found anything yet I would call a "con". However, while the Mac doesn't support AVCHD, the camera will record in HD video format (.MOV) that is compatible with QuickTime, iMovie, iPhoto and Aperture3.
Summary: Very good camera. Very sharp photos. Very clean video.
.. note Apple doesn't support AVCHD and AVCHD Lite; but HD Video with .MOV is supported.

Best Digital Camera for the price
by BikerBry on February 10, 2011
Pros: Price...$210 on sale at Newegg. LECIA Lense and CCD are an excellent combo. Picture quality is awesome, videos are very good for a camera and this has plenty of manual settings to keep anybody satisfied. Zoom is huge.
Cons: Would like the USB to charge it as well. Thought the flash was a little hot and washed some detail out of pictures my Sony never did. The software is crap, but so is most of it out there today that comes bundled with a camera.
Summary: I am very surprised the editor's rating wasn't higher for this camera.
This camera is about a year old and the price has come down on it significantly. ...Summary: I am very surprised the editor's rating wasn't higher for this camera.
This camera is about a year old and the price has come down on it significantly. It originally retailed for $399 and I got it for $210 brand new. It has a LEICA lense and excellent CCD. The batterylife is good and the image quality is fantastic. If you are in the market for a compact point and shoot, or something for amature photography, this camera will not disappoint. The wide angle lense is very good and so is the zoom.
If I had an unlimited budget and needed a new camera, I would buy it again. The value for the price is unbeatable. Yes, I like it that much.
Check Amazon and Neweggif you are looking at purchasing one of these. For an everyday camera, it cannot be beat.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice zoom and HD video, lost details.
by FeiWang1 on January 2, 2011
Pros: Quick zoom and always focused. I see other big zoom cameras takes a second to focus.
Nice video. The 720p video looks even better than the photo!Cons: Details could be lost in the bright area;
Indoor photos shown some grains;

Summary: I bought Panasonic Lumix ZS6 before Christmas and brought it to a cruise vacation. Since it costs twice as a typical point and shot, I expect betrter picture quality and performance. I don't care about big zoom. Actually, big zoom causes image distorsions.
I use iA (intelligent auto) mode all the time. It starts up quickly and the shutter the lag is minimal. However, it could take 5~6 seconds between shots when the flash is used.
I'm a little supprised to notice the lost of details in the bright area. In one photo, the details of a white scupture is quite vague, no direct sun shine on it. In another photo, part of a door has sune shine on it and you cannot see those big door knobs. What you see is just a white area. Again, those are outdoor photos and I use the auto mode. Wish I could post my photos here.
Indoor photos are good as a point and shot cameras. However, pictures show some grains. One bid issue is that you cannot set flash on with auto mode. You can set flash to OFF or AUTO, but you cannot set it ON!? This makes it difficult to take pictures when the subject is against a window. The face and the interior will be too dark.
Bottom line: this is a nice point and shot camera especially strong at zoom and video. I know it is not fare, but it is too early to expect a compact DSLR.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

The Point-and-Shoot for the picky DSLR user.
by JBKphotography on September 25, 2010
Pros: My "pro" DSLR is HEAVY, and sometimes it's overkill for my needs. Now I can "get the shot" as well as shoot amazing HD long-range video. No need to lug lenses! AVCHD lite footage easy to edit on a Mac in Imovie '09.
Cons: Photos can be "noisy," Tough to shoot fast moving children/objects. Also, I wish that I could isolate focus better on subject, it always seems to be shooting at "infinity" even when the aperture is low. For all of this, I give it less than 5 stars.
Summary: The Point-and-Shoot option for a picky DSLR owner.
Fully customizable for the "pro" user, or easy to use in IA Mode (Intelligent Auto) for ease. I'm very impressed with ...Summary: The Point-and-Shoot option for a picky DSLR owner.
Update: per inquiry. I did not have to "convert" the footage prior to import in Imovie '09. I simply used a card reader and launched Imovie and then asked it to "import from camera"...it found the card reader, showed me the clips, and I imported clips.. Clips then show up in Event Panel, and then I created a Project. Very easy.
Fully customizable for the "pro" user, or easy to use in IA Mode (Intelligent Auto) for ease. I'm very impressed with the quality of the AVCHD lite video. This was my main concern, and it hasn't let me down! I found low-light video to be very good! Easy to edit on a Mac in Imovie '09.
Bottom line, I don't leave home without it!

Per Apple on supported cameras: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3290#3
Updated on Sep 30, 2010Sorry for another update...but I'm still trying to figure this camera out, if possible! At this point, I do NOT recommend it for taking pictures of fast-moving children. It's best on landscapes & stationary objects. The most redeeming quality of the camera for me, is the video. If it weren't for that, I'd send it back. Perhaps my limitations are "in the settings" and I just have to figure it out....but for now, I'm disappointed in photo quality!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great value, lots of options, poor night photos
by satre_21 on August 7, 2011
Pros: GPS, big screen, plenty of options for the professional user, underwater housing available, great zoom in compact body.
Cons: Poor night shots. With plenty of light, the photos are dazzling. As soon as the sun starts to set, however, watch out! The images become pixelated and blurred. I didn't think it would be that big a deal, but it's enough to keep it from a 5 star rating

Panasonic ZS7 About As Advertised
by blxmckay on January 8, 2011
Pros: zoom, gps, text ID of pictures; if you take time to learn about the camera s quirks and take care you should like it
Cons: lack of viewfinder, need to do all sorts of odd things to see lcd in sunny weather even with lighted option turned on ; pix can be noisy without care; strange setup of options; very frustrating in some situations; Panasonic not much help with support
Summary: I'd buy it again, pros more important than cons, but lack of viewfinder a big problem (although all competitive cameras also lack viewfinder)
