The good: Excellent high-ISO-sensitivity photo quality; quiet, fast lenses good for shooting video and comfortable for manual focus; compact, with a nice physical design and control layout; large, tilting LCD.
The bad: No EVF option; frequently annoying user interface; unusual amount of distortion on 18-55mm kit lens; no neutral image color settings.
The bottom line: For a lot of people, the excellent high-sensitivity photo quality, competitive performance, and an ultracompact body will likely outweigh the Sony Alpha NEX-5's quirks and operational annoyances.

Excellent camera with a few quirks
by tomser on May 27, 2011
Pros: APS-C sensor, sharp image, great color reproduction, noise profile better than many SLRs out there, useful HDR mode, very fast burst shooting for this class (7fps), also shoots flash burst at about 2fps (a welcome and very useful feature in low light), gr
Cons: Very few lenses, no EVF, E-mount not compatible with Sony alpha SLR lenses, no hotshoe, menu system overly complicated, not discrete (very noise shutter), average battery life,

Summary: The sony alpha NEX-5 targets a very narrow niche in the market. It's a camera for users who want good image quality and are looking to upgrade from a point-and-shoot but not quite ready to carry an SLR. It can also be a useful addition for a pro that wants to pack light.
I have the 16mm lens and although it's not the best fit for a primary lens, it does the job well and without the distortion of it's 18-55mm brother. I would have preferred a 28mm f/1.8 for this camera. An f/1.8 or f/2.0 teamed up with the camera's excellent noise profile would allow for the kind of low-light performance that you expect from $5000+ SLRs at a 600 price point. The burst shooting performs better than expected, the 7fps is maintained even at low shutter speed although it drops to around 4fps past 1/13 shutter speed. The video is pretty good, although I would have liked a 720p/60fps mode. I wish I could change the aperture while shooting a clip, but one must do so before starting to film.
In synthesis, it's a great camera that offers SLR-like image quality and performance in a smaller package than many of its hybrid counterparts. -
Excellant walk around camera
by taxfool on April 5, 2011
Pros: Ultra compact and discreet, sharp photos, very good high iso quality, relatively long HD video recording (most if not all dslrs overheat after 5 minutes), live video flip screen, and fast autofocus.
Cons: Very few lenses available, difficult to change settings, maximum iso of 1600 at auto mode, noisy shutter, different flash hotshoe than typical Sony flashes, cannot wirelessly trigger Sony or Minolta flashes, and does not have a built in optical viewfinder

Summary: I shoot with a Sony A700 and Minolta 7D and was pleasantly surprised at how sharp my photos turned out with the NEX-5 even under low light conditions. The camera focuses quickly during the day but slows down a bit at night (although it's still not too bad). I like the fact that it can fit in your pocket and shoot a decent amount of video before overheating. Plus, it's discreet, lite, ultra portable and flexible.
It's a fantastic upgrade for a point and shoot user or for a dslr user that wants to pack superlite. -
Great point and shoot with manual functions of a SLR
by hakbinahn on January 5, 2011
Pros: Low Light, great color, display screen of high resolution. Very powerful feature in a small camera, tilting viewing screen, 1080 Video, and build quality is solid.
Cons: menu system
Summary: For a Small camera body it does not compare to any other mirror-less interchangeable lenses camera.
Love the camera and Glad I picked this over the Panasonic GF-2....Summary: For a Small camera body it does not compare to any other mirror-less interchangeable lenses camera.

Great camera, crappy lenses
by llaitner on December 20, 2010
Pros: The large sensor combined with a compact size makes for a great camera that you will have with you when you need it.
Cons: Why on earth did they offer a 16mm f/2.8 lens as the only prime lens? A 25mm f/1.8 lens would have serious photographers drooling over the camera. The f/3.5 zoom lens has to be a joke too. The large sensor is just wasted with these lame lenses.
Summary: I can't wait for Nikon or Canon to get this EVIL camera right. Give me a compact camera with an APS sized sensor and some good bright prime lenses ...

Underful camera.
by oijmark on September 17, 2010
Pros: You don´t need a flash indoors anymore
Cons: So Sony built an quite expensy camera and the screen will be easy damed. I can´t understand that. That a big scandal! Buy an proteced screen when you buy the camera!
