It does a great job at streaming videos and audio files
by M7a4r3k on September 23, 2010
Pros: It is designed to do one thing and one thing only - and it does it perfectly.
Cons: I have had difficulties setting up and running the wireless under WPA2-PSK. I ended running a wired connection. I think this is an issue with my router. No static IP capability. Limited user customization options. Limited documentation.
Summary: I think its funny to read another user's complaint about it not being able to access local media files. The ROKU is not a media server and I don'...
Summary: I think its funny to read another user's complaint about it not being able to access local media files. The ROKU is not a media server and I don't expect it to function in an area that it was not designed to do.
It does what it is designed to do and does it well.
Make sure to go to the ROKU site and compare the various versions and pick the one that will work for you tomorrow and not just meet your needs today.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

very good player
by bubazoo on September 22, 2010
Pros: For those of us who are visually challenged, like me, who don't need blu-ray or HD 1080p video, this player is perfect. I got rid of my Comcast Cable TV entirely after getting this box, spending the money saved on faster internet instead
Cons: I agree about lack of hulu support, but Roku could always add that. Blu-Ray or game systems don't either so I don't see that as a disadvantage really. They really couldn't have done any better, I would recommend this to anyone

Summary: I love everything about this product. despite the fact they could add a better channel lineup, they could always do that with a simple software upgrade at any time, so I think this player is definitely worth investing in. It has no hardware flaws whatsoever and I've had mine for years now. You can watch movies, leo's twit.tv broadcasts, on-demand amazon video, like I said, I got rid of my cable TV service for this little box and I haven't looked back since. In fact I got rid of Cable TV, subscribed for 2x faster internet, and still saving money over cable TV and internet combined.

Great, more affordable alternative to Apple TV
by Mystakill on September 23, 2010
Pros: Great little streamer box. Plays from numerous sources, including your own local media with the Roksbox channel (http://roksbox.com).
Cons: Lack of video connections. Only Composite and HDMI on this particular model; component was dropped in order to shrink things down.

Roku is great, but there are alternatives.
by FranklinH10 on September 23, 2010
Pros: You can shut down your desktop and still use the Roku,
Cons: Cnet has little info about alternatives including the WD TV Live Plus HD, and actually no mention at all of the brite-View CinemaGo or CinemaTube media extenders, all of which can do Netflix.
Summary: Do a search on Cnet and you would never find a single mention of brite-View, as if it doesn't exist, and yet their media xtenders and many others on ...
Summary: Do a search on Cnet and you would never find a single mention of brite-View, as if it doesn't exist, and yet their media xtenders and many others on the market can do what people really want: watch Netflix AND allow you to use wifi to have videos and photos from a desktop on your tv

Cheap solid access to Netflix on the big screen TV
by logos on September 22, 2010
Pros: Now that Roku have stabilized their firmware on the box, it's really an excellent way to stream netflix. Added to that, the new firmware allows the instant play netflix catalog to be searched and added to your queue. It also does youtube
Cons: Using the HDMI cable on my Sony hd tv creates a green screen on the Roku if left for a few days without use. Must be an HDMI handshake issue with the Sony. Resorted to using component cables and haven't had a problem since.

Summary: Overall, it does the job pretty well. In fact it plays netflix content better than on my Sony XBR9's built in netflix app. The Sony doesn't stretch 4:3 content to wide screen with SD streaming content, whereas the Roku box does. Also, the quality of the picture seems to be better. I originally was concerned that not having an off switch would cause the box to fail prematurely, but standby mode seems to work just fine and doesn't use a lot of power. Overall, the fact that Roku continues to provide firmware updates to improve the box and other users are creating private channels to boost content is a plus, but if your sole use is for Netflix streaming, you won't be disappointed by the picture quality or the new search feature. It's also just so user friendly even your grandparents could work it.

Great for Netflix, good for everything else
by mdavis03 on September 24, 2010
Pros: Smooth operation in Netflix, large library through Amazon VOD, Pandora through my home theater system sounded great
Cons: Main menu can be sluggish, lost wifi settings, no Youtube support, majority of "channels" require a subscription, finding a specific channel can be a challenge, no Hulu plus support
Summary: If all you do is watch streaming Netflix, the Roku players won't let you down. I owned mine a week before I returned it (found out they were releasing ...
Summary: If all you do is watch streaming Netflix, the Roku players won't let you down. I owned mine a week before I returned it (found out they were releasing three new models...) and the interface is pretty easy to use, if not a bit sluggish when it is first loading up. It lost my wifi settings once or twice when I was first setting it up and wouldn't work at one point because of a service issue regarding the Roku channels. The remote is dead simple to use but I do with there was a power button available instead of just letting it go into a sleep/hibernate mode.
Overall, a very good player but for what my wife and I wanted to do, the Roku player didnt fit the bill. When we had it, we realized we wanted disc playback abilities, the option to surf the internet, facebook, youtube, etc and figured a HTPC would fit the bill much better on our HDTV.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cute but Disappointing
by wildbillc777 on August 15, 2011
Pros: Small physical footprint
Low power consumption
Produces surprisingly good HD video
Good client for LOTS of internet-based media services.
Glitch free, intuitive user interface.Cons: While Roku is a good client for Internet media servers, it's EPIC FAIL as a client for my in-home media servers. Duh.
There's no on/off switch.Summary: Broadcast TV is a social disgrace. Cable/Satellite TV is clinically dead. M2M (Media 2 ME) is king.....and Roku is a good M2M device. But.........
My TV does all ...Summary: Broadcast TV is a social disgrace. Cable/Satellite TV is clinically dead. M2M (Media 2 ME) is king.....and Roku is a good M2M device. But.........
My TV does all the same stuff, so does my Blu-Ray player, so does my laptop, so does my desktop, so does my Android phone. Roku could have chosen to be a KILLER APP box, but in the end, chose to be just another of dozens of emerging internet client appliances. There is nothing to recommend Roku over the others...except that they are early to market. I bought two Rokus and have since sold them both. Save your money until Roku wakes up and smells the "what the public really wants" coffee. If they figure it out how to client my in-home media, buy all the Roku stock you can. -
Great for watching Netflix and Hulu Plus
by lhiatt on May 17, 2011
Pros: I bought the Roku with the intentions of either cancelling cable or downgrading to basic. My daughter watches Netflix almost exclusively, and I watch most of my current shows on Hulu using my Hulu Plus account. There are other little channels, like HGTV a
Cons: Sometimes when I watch on HULU and I try to pause a show, I get some weird issues, like picture in picture and its all out of sinc. Not sure if that's user error or not! but other than that, I have no issues with it. Maybe more channels?
Summary: To lower my cable bill, and try to keep my family from watching so much mindless TV, I bought this device. So far it is doing exactly what I want! ...

Don't bother with Roku
by petown on May 12, 2011
Pros: Only pro item: the device is the best way right now to view Amazon content.
Apple TV doesn't provide this.Cons: Clunky interface, primitive networking, slow response on a fast network, very limited content, extra cost for other channels have no value due to lack of worthwhile content, and NO technical or billing support from Roku beyond basic hardware functions.
Summary: I purchased the Roku HD and Apple TV at the same time to do a head-to-head comparison and was really disappointed in the Roku player, technology, execution and support. The ...
Summary: I purchased the Roku HD and Apple TV at the same time to do a head-to-head comparison and was really disappointed in the Roku player, technology, execution and support. The Roku device fails on almost every level! Interface is awkward, clunky and primitive. Search features are very basic and almost useless. Additional channel content is sorely lacking. This cannot be the future of video streaming or video on demand.
Support was non existent, despite the website and phone numbers. Call center is in India and emails to Roku go unanswered for months, literally.
This market is still evolving so hope springs eternal, but for now, Roku is a second class citizen in the game.
Here is why Apple TV is better and the device leader, for now:
1. interface and navigation between home and sub menus is smoother, more intuitive and smarter.
2. Search functions are better than Roku (especially when comparing Netflix channel).
3. The remote works better, easy to use.
4. The device has the ability to sleep (Roku suggests unplugging their device to turn it off). -
great device
by alleriodrone on March 16, 2011
Pros: great size easy to set up and great to use
Cons: only that it has limited amount of shows
