Roku HD XR Player price range: $399.00

The good: Affordable sub-$130 price tag; streams a variety of Internet video and audio services, including Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, Major League Baseball games, and Mediafly podcasts; dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi; works with all TVs; upgradable firmware allows for periodic update of content and features; good HD video quality (on channels and programming that support it).
The bad: Ever cheaper Blu-ray players offer many of the same Internet viewing options plus disc playback; video quality varies from channel to channel, depending upon provider and source material; setup and content queues usually require at least some PC interaction; yet another box under the TV; no centralized way to access and manipulate channel providers.
The bottom line: New content channels and faster Wi-Fi make the Roku HD XR Player a good choice for anyone who wants a quick and easy way to add Netflix--and a variety of other Internet media channels--to any TV.

Don't waste your time.
by D-Mascus on December 27, 2010
Pros: Great idea and presentation. Works for a little while but is very undependable.
Cons: You have to wait forever and reconnect just about every time you want to watch something. You're much better off getting a tv, game console, or DVD player with the internet capabilities built in.
Summary: I bought it because of Netflix and was fairly satisfied for a month or so. I also bought a Sony Bravia tv for a different part of the house with ...
Summary: I bought it because of Netflix and was fairly satisfied for a month or so. I also bought a Sony Bravia tv for a different part of the house with the internet capabilities and immediately realized that Roku was in big trouble as far as wireless connectivity. The wired connection may be great.....15 years ago. We're in the bluetooth/wireless world now.

Summary: This did exactly what I wanted it to - gave me access to Netflix. And, as a bonus, I just figured out how to set up Squeezebox server on my computer, and by adding that "channel" on the Roku I can now access my itunes library! Not knowing that they were about to come out with new versions, I bought mine used for $60 but I still think I got a great value. Roku has alot more options than the new bottom-end Blu-ray player I got for our other TV.

GREAT Value! Easy Setup! Easy to Use!
by jre401k on August 28, 2010
Pros: More content and more value than game platform for now. This is a great alternative to existing media. It has the potential to replace the boob tube content.
Once you get past your home network issues this is a dream to use.Cons: -Poor network support
-Poor handling of critical networking troubleshooting tools or recommendations
-Library is not as robust as I would like, so ontent is fairly dated.
-Web browsing is non existent so you are stuck with their apps.Summary: First and foremost, The ROKU is a fabulous device offering much content at a very good value. Furthermore, this is a great device if your network is in good working ...
Summary: First and foremost, The ROKU is a fabulous device offering much content at a very good value. Furthermore, this is a great device if your network is in good working order.
However, I had lots of networking problems. -Set up of the unit was easy, but it crashed my network multiple times
When I step back and look at my problems, they were all my own infrastructure problems with a fragile and overtaxed network. So start out your search for a media streaming device by getting the best possible router you can afford!! Until, I figured this out, using the ROKU virtually collapsed my major brand nPlus router network everytime I used it wired or wireless. My PS3 did not seem to have this problem. So, I thought I was good to go with ROKU.
After I upgraded my router substatially (perhaps beyond the minimum requirements), Voila, no problems whatsoever!
So, my only complaint was that there was absolutely no documentation or help available to sort out network problems. It would be helpful if they could help you to navigate the home networking solutions or perhaps even recommend various router configurations, etc.
As of August, 2010 ROJU is the best thing going!
Note that my 85 year old mother has a very simple wirelss network and there were no problems setting this up for her. It is simple enough that she can access much content on her own. -
Fantastic. After recent update
by pdtate22 on July 29, 2010
Pros: Ease of use. Growing line up of channels. After the most recent update netflix app is MUCH easier to use.
Cons: Controller is lack luster. Program to your cable box and fast forwarding is much easier. Also fast forwarding is frame by frame regardless.
Summary: Very cool device.
