Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex TV price range: $94.99 - $218.25

The good: Built-in Ethernet for streaming files from a networked PC or accessing Internet services; supports Netflix streaming and other online media access; HD output up to 1080p; integrated slot for FreeAgent GoFlex storage drive; compact, stylish design; you can connect up to two mass USB storage devices--including a camera--at one time; HDMI and component video connectivity; plays Flip camcorder video files.
The bad: No built-in Wi-Fi (wireless option costs an extra $50); Blu-ray players with similar features are available for not much more money; the drive sticks out when installed; Seagate's 1TB GoFlex drive doesn't fit inside the device; no Pandora streaming.
The bottom line: The inclusion of Netflix and other online-streaming options make the FreeAgent GoFlex TV a compelling option for file hoarders who also want access to cloud-based media.

Waste of money for something that is just a money grab.
by 2lmantim2 on October 13, 2011
Pros: it works sometimes.
Cons: Remote is useless, unit always locks up, you rarely gete to watch an entire movie before it locks up and then you can't control it with the remote. Most times you end up having to unplug it. Can't rewind or fast forward through divx movies, can only do it
Summary: Junk, don't waste your money.

WARNING DO NOT BUY!!!
by barkley007 on August 29, 2011
Pros: small stylish unit
Cons: constantly freezes during play back. Not all go flex hard drive fit inside of unit, and the ones that do stick out (destroying all of the aesthetics). Seagate usually turns out quality products but this is not one of them! The lack of support, and complai

Very slow and mostly unresponsive, crappy support.
by vanaya on June 29, 2011
Pros: Simple setup to HDTV from network. Small sleek design, and the best part is the option to slide GoFlex drives for glitch/hesitation free streaming.
Cons: Where do we start:
? Remote control sucks, I always had to point directly to unit and double push buttons for response/action.
? No available apps. Official forum site states the apps are coming but nothing yet.
? Official forum support is a joke. SeagatSummary: I can not recommend this item.

Can't play 1080p at all!
by etalk on January 17, 2011
Pros: It seems to recognize many format, but I couldn't get it to recognize .iso files. Cheap and big remote control (unlike WD media player).
Cons: - Couldn't get it output 1080p at al. It could only output 480p, which looks terrible on my 42in Vizio HDTV.
Summary: Whatever i did, i couldn't make it to output 1080p. All i got was 480 SD. I even tried to connect it directly to my TV's HDMI port. ...
Summary: Whatever i did, i couldn't make it to output 1080p. All i got was 480 SD. I even tried to connect it directly to my TV's HDMI port. Terrible. I am returning it to Micro Center. This is the 2nd Media player I returned. I tried out the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus HD Media Player yesterday. After 3 hours, I gave it up. It can play .mov and certain movie files really well, along with photos and music. But for certain files, it couldn't play audio, just movies. I just ordered the Iomega Director 1TB. Hopefully, 3rd time is a charm.

Several more features required to be worth buying this.
by porthosvine on January 10, 2011
Pros: 1. It works for viewing Netflix quite well with an ethernet cable attached.
2. It plays .flac. .wav, .ogg and quite a number of other file formats.
3. Small and portable size.Cons: 1. Cannot stream directly from computer's browser.
2. Would be nice if it upconverted to 1080p.
3. Needs to have wifi integrated into the box. Having to purchase a wifi dongle is a rip off.
4. User interface needs file search feature.Summary: In future versions of the GoFlex TV, Seagate needs to make the following inprovements and keep the cost well under $159.00, which is the discount cost of many Blu-Ray ...
Summary: In future versions of the GoFlex TV, Seagate needs to make the following inprovements and keep the cost well under $159.00, which is the discount cost of many Blu-Ray players that enable Netflix and streaming.
1. The Seagate GoFlex TV cannot stream directly from your computer's browser to watch Hulu and other sites. This device needs to be able to do that to be worth its price.
Seagate's documentation is misleading in regard to this. The only way you can stream a movie from your computer to the Seagate GoFlex TV is through a "hard file" placed in your shared folder. I want stream Hulu and other programs available on my computer's browser directly on my television and the latest version (avail Jan. 2011) of the GoFlex TV does not do this.
2. The Seagate GoFlex TV needs to be able to upconvert to 1080p. This device needs to be able to do that to be worth its price.
3. The price is ridiculous in consideration of the fact that you need to purchase a Wifi dongle to free yourself from an ethernet cable. Wifi should be integrated into the box itself for a more streamlined, less awkward appearance, useage and increased portability. Users don't need a bunch of extra objects hanging off their equipment. Streamlined and integrated is what is desired.
4. GoFlex TV needs direct links to more internet services, such as Pandora and Hulu.
5. Seagate needs to improve GoFlex TV's interface, because it takes forever to navigate to your desired files on an attached hard drive. A search and choose feature would be nice, but is not really a deal breaker.
6. The cheap-ee made in China remote control does not respond sometimes and skips other times.
Summation: Seagate needs to consider its direct competition, namely Roku Streaming Player, WD TV Network Media Players, and Sony Network Media Player. However, Roku and Sony will loose out if they fail to produce a media player that plays .flac and the other media formats supported by Seagate GoFlex TV. -
Wanted to link the comp to the TV, got this box instead
by Il Sogno on January 2, 2011
Pros: Small, HD picture competent.
Cons: Has difficulty detecting and accessing Windows 7 home network via LAN, remote control POS, locks up, doesn't display video thumbnails, none of the software that came with the FreeAgent HD or the GoFlex TV properly syncs.
Summary: A friend recently bought a WD TV hub. Saw this product at the store and thought I'd give it a chance.
Wish someone had reviewed this before I.

This plastic box locks up when viewing photos/video, the LAN documentation is sparse, and does not seem to be able to access shared directories on my wired local area network, which was the principle reason I purchased this box.
The LED is very bright, particularly for an object that is designed for home entertainment purposes. The component cables that came with this device are ludicrously small, limiting placement.
The remote control is unresponsive; at times the box has locked up and wouldn't shut down.
Both the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex TV and the Seagate FreeAgent Hard drive (purchased separately) came with multiple syncing software packages; none of which correctly updated the HD. But they did happen to install a plethora of junk-ware that has prompted me to update forty-freaking-thousand times.
Look, Seagate, I don't want software to track packages.

Meets Needs and Expectations
by tonyltalks on July 30, 2010
Pros: It is convienent for a lot of different uses. It has the capacities to work with different media servers such as PLAYON, VUZE . You can use media servers to stream your content which resides any network connected computer.
Cons: Native content is still limited but you do get Netflix and Youtube , Mediafly for Podcasts, and different photo websites. Not a broad range as the Roku channels but this product is still new. Hopefully there will be more content providers .

Summary: I'm networking five computers and several media devices. I have two Roku players and a D-Link NAS. Roku's are limited in that you can not use them to stream (natively) from your networked computer to your tv. A few content providers are working on this but hard to set up. Roku does not yet work with the media servers but The Seagate TV does. Note servers must meet computer requirements, but self contained units like the Roku and Seagate TV do not. There is a wider range of content providers on the Roku but media servers like PLAYON are increase their range of content. Content on PLAYON is more interesting and HULU is available, where as HULU is not available on the Roku. If you have a good computer system that exceeds the minmal computer reqirements you can serve more TV and Movie programs to the Seagate TV. Both Seagate and Roku have Youtube and Netflix which play very well. Roku has Amazon natively but you can get Amazon using PLAYON with the Seagate TV. (Amazon is good for renting or purchasing content somewaht newer that Netflix but Netflix seems to be catching up. If you are interesting in having a lot of podcasting services Roku offers more variety, but both Roku and Seagate do have Medifly. If you are interesting in viewing older TV shows you can find many on Netflix. I still like the Rockford Files, etc. But newer stuff can be rented or purchased on Amazon. But if you are cheap and don't mind the commercials then viewing newer stuff and older on Hulu might be for you, providing you use a media server like PlayOn . Just be aware that Hulu will be charging a monthly fee soon for certain content. Some content providers for Roku also charge a low monthly fee. Netflix charges $9 a month. For me I have two 30" flat screen TV's so most content from Roku and Seagate play well for me. I enjoy using the Seagate which allows me to serve my own content which I stream using the media servers and D-Link which also has a media server built in. They also have a softwhare based media server that also works well with Seagate. Although I haven't tried Linux based media servers they should also work well. The one that comes with Vuze for Linux should work very well (past experience with other devices).
Bottom line Seagate TV is a good device especially if an internet connected Blueray DVD player is not wanted and out of your price range. I am using a wired connection for my Seagate as it does not have WiFi built in. The WiFi adapter has to be specific to Seagate as it is advertized. I do have other adpters that are working with Linux based computers I have but have not yet tried them with the Seagate TV. I've been using the Seagate TV for a little more than a few weeks.
