worst tech product ever
by edensw on October 20, 2006
Pros: when it works, 100 hours
Cons: hardly ever works
Summary: Continual problems--freezes up, black screen, features on remote stop working. Requires continual resets. Tech support at Directv absolutely the worst--they cannot help with this. A nightmare.

Far Inferior to TiVo

Summary: This device has more features than the Dish dvr I replaced this with, but I'm very close to moving my smaller hard drive TiVo back into the main TV room.
I tried to allow enough time to become accustomed to the new device, but there are severe flaws. The SeriesLink feature is nice, but has very limited options and does a poor job of differentiating between first run and repeat showings.
The DVR is very slow. I don't understand why a company releases a device that is absolutely incapable of performing as it is supposed to.
Worst of all, it freezes up on nearly a daily basis.
I will be calling DirecTV to complain about this DVR and demand satisfaction. -

Summary: I fail to see why I should be held to a commitment on faulty equipment that never worked. After the company TIVO parted ways from your company you tried to produce your own DVR an was unsuccessful. I was sent 3 to 4 receivers (I LOST COUNT AT SOME POINT...IT MAY HAVE BEEN 5) that would overheat and shut down automatically. It was an inconvenience and a safety hazard to me and my family. Your company willingly and knowingly leased defective equipment after you could not produce the patented TIVO DVR.

The WORST DVR I have ever owned
by Starfish Jim on January 24, 2007

Summary: What in the world was DirecTv thinking????! It must have just been $$$ signs because their decision to drop TIVO and go with their own severely flawed unit simply smacks of corporate suicide. About a year ago my first Hughes TIVO died due to a hard disk crash, DirecTV, to their credit, replaced it with an R10 model for free. That has been wonderful as it still used the TIVO operating system. But just last week, the Hughes TIVO in the bedroom crashed and DirecTV once again sent out a replacement. But this time it was an R15. I only had to take one look at the totally brain-dead remote to realize this was going to be a nightmare. And sure enough, just as soon as I had it connected up and turned on, it rebooted 3 times all by itself, right in the middle of configuring the satelite and remote.
What people are saying is absolutely true. This is a piece of garbage compared to our old TIVO units. In summary:
1. The remote's key placement and design is 100% retarded. It nearly takes two hands to use it.
2. The response to button presses is delayed and sluggish.
3. The failure to allow managing 2 tuners and their buffers is a major oversight and setback from the TIVO units.
4. The user interface is completely awkward and unintuitive. Even as an engineer, I had to thoroughly read the manual just to figure out how to record a program. If your mother can't figure out how to make her VCR record, she is NEVER, EVER going to figure out this beast.
5. It is not possible to turn off our TV without having to slide the remote's selector switch all the way over to "TV", even though I have programmed the remote for our TV's codes and it works OK to MUTE and change the volume.
6. The fonts on the display are so small and narrow that it is very hard to read on our small (19") bedroom TV. TIVO had nice big screens but these DirecTV guys must assume every TV you own is a giant 50" plasma model because that's the only way you are going to read the screen without squinting.
I could go on and on. I'm so dissapointed with this piece of junk and the fact that DirecTV has caused me to even waste my time on this negative review but I feel very strongly that the world needs to know that DirecTV has REALLY, REALLY made a SERIOUS error in judgement this time. I have been with DirecTV for over 12 years since I bought my first $600 receiver from RadioShack in 1995. But I can confidently say that if this is their new direction and policy then I will be happily terminating my connection with DirecTV and sending my hard earned dollars to ComCast or DishNetwork very soon.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Error-Bug "City" A Piece of Crap
by carrera329 on December 3, 2006
Pros: NEGATED, bookmarks good idea if worked more than half the time
Cons: Does Not Record ALL Programs that are Scheduled

Summary: Hum, where do I benign I've had the distinct pleasure of dealing with the R15-100 Hour after first dealing with its predecessor R15-80 Hour. I received the R15-100 after I finally got DIRECTV to agree that my assessment of the receiver was correct “Defective.” Stooped recording certain programs set to record “Season-Pass” an example would be a news program that comes on Monday thru Friday. This receiver Freezes at times where you have to reset it or unplug the receiver, half the time you try to set a bookmark for a show you are watching the receiver won’t allow you too!! At times the receiver R15-100 will for no reason reset itself as your right in the middle of watching a program.
The manual for the R15-100 was made for the person who can’t Walk and Talk on the cell phone at the same time if you know what I mean. So you have to figure out most of the “advance features” for your self.
This is the worst designed Remote control UI (user interface) I have ever come across. The remote sur cumbersome, to bulky the key cowardly placed.
I have to down grade DIRECTV form 5 Star service to 2.5 stars’s as I’ve was told on two separate occasions the receiver would download and upgrade the firmware with the must up-to-date Patch to fix any other errors/bugs, this has not happened as my receiver is still working off the original 0x1022 version, nor does DIRECTV offer a update you can download to a USB Flash Drive with auto install program attached.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
