The good: Can record two HD programs simultaneously while playing back a third, previously recorded one; huge 1TB storage capacity; expandable storage; accepts cable TV and over-the-air signals; 30-second commercial skip; excellent easy-to-use interface and remote; impressive Internet and home-networking features, including video content from Netflix, Amazon, and CinemaNow, Rhapsody subscription music service, online and cell phone scheduling, photo and music streaming; TiVo To Go transfers recordings to PCs and portable devices; able to download and view most standard digital video file formats from networked PCs (with premium Desktop Plus PC software).
The bad: Requires subscription fee in addition to cable bill; sluggish transitions between menu screens; does not work with video-on-demand services; requires extra tuner box for cable systems with switched digital video services; must program 30-second skip; no picture-in-picture; TiVo To Go requires long, slow transfer and transcoding times; some premium features (Netflix, Amazon, Rhapsody, Desktop Plus, Wi-Fi adapter, expandable storage) require additional one-time expenses or subscription fees.
The bottom line: The TiVo HD XL charges a hefty premium for its spacious recording capacity and THX certification, but most users will be content sticking to the all-but-identical standard TiVo HD DVR.

Only improvements on the TIVO 2 Series DVR.
by kawh80 on September 19, 2008
Pros: Size of Hard Drive, I'll never have a problem of premature deletion of shows.
User friendly Menus
Save time (time is money) by skipping commercials of recorded programsCons: Pricey, expensive box and lifetime service equals high price tag for this luxury.

Summary: I've had a TIVO 2 for five years with the lifetime membership that literally paid for itself. For the past year I've wanted a HD recorder like TIVO but didn't want to pay the high price for a low amount of storage space. Although I've had it for a short time the quaity of recordings in HD have already improved the TV experience.

contains a design flaw not mentioned before
by silvercup7 on March 17, 2011
Pros: does everything I could ever want it to do. I love using it. all information is at your fingertips
Cons: There is a design flaw that I have not seen mentioned anywhere else. They will admit to the design flaw if pressed. When you delete a program, it is stored in the "recently deleted items folder. It will hold 100's of shows that you have deleted. As that f

Summary: I worked out the problem on my own. every couple of days, I go to the deleted items folder & manually delete all the stored old programs. By keeping the folder empty, I can avoid all the freeze-ups.
There is no excuse for this. They have had plenty of time to fix the problem but have done nothing about it. In the beginning, they told me it was my unit. They sent me a new one but it had the same problem. I know two other people that have had the same problem.
They simply cannot or do not want to fix the problem. Since I discovered how to fix it myself, I am much happier. I love my Tivo but feel cheated & deceived by them. -
Contains a design flaw.
by mclark305 on September 30, 2010
Pros: Nice picture quality. Provides great program information about a specific program including the number of seasons it aired and the episode lineup for each season, which allows viewers to watch episodes sequentially within a season.
Cons: This box has a basic design flaw that requires a video signal above 90 percent to operate. Don't buy it unless you know for a fact that the video signal will consistently remain above 90 percent.
Summary: We bought the box through TIVO during a promotional they offered in December 2009. We received the box at a greatly reduced price. Although we were promised it was new, ...
Summary: We bought the box through TIVO during a promotional they offered in December 2009. We received the box at a greatly reduced price. Although we were promised it was new, I have my doubts. If the video signal does not remain above 90 percent, it won't record the program. We have to reset the box once a week. TIVO tells us it's a cable problem and will not return our money or exchange it for a different box. They will only replace it with the same box. We have done everything they suggested and it still won't work properly. We installed a cable card, a signal amplifier, and switched to digital cable. But the box continues to fail.

had to upgrade
by dvzee1 on September 17, 2009
Pros: Had the cable DVR , OK if you don't know better but if you were a previous TIVO user it was a big let down. Upgraded to HDXL and very happy with it.
Cons: THE COST of the box

Best Thing I Bought This Year
by lovethegadget on June 1, 2009
Pros: - get rid of your ugly dish
- Tivo interface (which is awesome)
- HUGE storage capacity
- works with my ReadyNAS storage
- fits in my existing media cabinetCons: - very expensive
- sometimes reception is interrupted in snow or rain
- wish the remote could program in my other componentsSummary: I bit the bullet & upgraded from my Gen 1 Tivo. This thing is so huge, there are never deleted shows. Plus you can download Netflix directly from the interface ...
Summary: I bit the bullet & upgraded from my Gen 1 Tivo. This thing is so huge, there are never deleted shows. Plus you can download Netflix directly from the interface - no more Roku box (which was a total waste of money). The hi-def display is beautiful. But the best part is you get the easy to use Tivo interface. No complaints - it's a total winner. I've recommended it to many people over a dish.

Love it! I just want picture in picture search
by moogle2 on March 1, 2009
Pros: love the interface, love netflix, love you-tube, love the little bloo-bloop noises.
Cons: TiVo interface is standard def and stretched- now i know. now i notice I REALLY want picture in picture when I search. Not a huge fan of the price,I hope it's going to great new updates soon! Is not compatible with the future tru2way :(
Summary: Ok, bottom line- the price is what will kill it for most- it killed it for me for years. Well, I'm so happy I have it. I know this ...

I know this isn't the most informative review- but it lets you know one more guy decided to bite the bullet and go and do it- and he's quite happy he did! I suppose you should too!
