The good: TiVo pauses live TV; controls cable and satellite boxes; ergonomic remote; excellent user interface and searchable program guide; supports networked audio, photos, and programming options.
The bad: TiVo requires additional monthly or lifetime charges; needs non-VoIP landline for initial setup; no HDTV support.
The bottom line: The best interface on the planet and cool network options make TiVo Series2 the standalone DVR of choice.

A great product that keeps getting better
by nateb on March 22, 2005
Pros: Easy to use, streams music from my computer, 30-second skip
Cons: Not enough record options, newer software updates have slowed the system down

Recording shows is easy, and with a broadband connection, programming can be done from anywhere with web access. I'd like a few more options though, such as being able to start recording late, not just finish late.
Watching sporting events is more fun now with pause, replay and frame-by-frame features.
In addition to television features, it's nice to be able to play the music collection stored on my computer. I'd like to see Tivo play iTunes Music Store files, however.
I can't speak to product support, since I've had nothing to contact them about. Any questions I've had are easily answered by browsing the Tivo website.
The only feature that doesn't work well is Tivo-to-go, which allows you to move shows to a computer for viewing elsewhere. The system update for this feature made the interface very sluggish, and copying to a computer takes a prohibitively long time.
Overall, this is probably my favorite piece of electronics in the house.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice, but picture worse with Tivo than without
Pros: Very friendly to use, makes recording very easy
Cons: I get a lot of pixel-ization when watching 'live' tv on my direct-view tv...the picture just isn't the same quality as it was when I only had the digital cable piped in

We love our Tivo
by rkerry on February 26, 2008
Pros: No more commercials, rock solid performance and a great interface, best remote ever made
Cons: Once a year the wireless connection will get lost (that's barely a con)

Summary: Out of all the technology items we own, this one has stood the test of time. I mean how many other tech products do you own and use for over 5 years and still think, I don't need a replacement or upgrade, this thing still rocks.
I love the Amazon Unbox integration, the downloadable programs (CNET has a great one), the interface is great!!! Probably one of my favorite interfaces of all products.
The remote alone will make me keep this product as long as possible. It's simple and easy to use.
The only reason to upgrade will be to get HD, but I'll buy a Tivo for that too, they won me over and I won't trust a cable company to do my DVR work. -
super awesome
by chrisemcleod on February 4, 2008
Pros: its a tivo
Cons: cant think of any
Summary: Tivo is awesome. If you have one, you are hooked. If you don't, you should be jealous.

more. i don't like it changing channels to record something while watching a program and having to go back to what i was watching. the telephone or network connection i chose the internet connection and had to buy a usb to usb connector that was a pain. now they have a dedicated unit for tivo wireless connection like everything else i have it.
it works. thats it. i like that it will pick programs that i would like to watch in the future and has recorded programs to watch if nothing intesting is on. -
Completely changes the way you watch TV

Summary: Since I got my tivo, I almost never watch live tv; I can watch whatever I want. The interface is nice-looking and easy to use. It also has the advantage of network connectivity, and the software is always having features added. Cnet is wrong in saying you need a landline; I have broadband and Voip, and I never had to use a phone line.

Have both Tivo and Dish and Tivo wins

Support Is the worst!
Pros: Nice interface, easy to use once setup.
Cons: Need analog phone line. These days with cells, cable internet, IP phones (won't work) this is major problem and had to take box to friend who has analog line to setup. Then when I decided to cancel, they took my credit card online, but refused to let me c

DirecTV TIVO allows 2 rec at once
Pros: I have the series 2 tivo with DirecTV. DirecTV version allows recording of two shows at once! The interface is a dream and the season pass feature is wonderful. DirecTV version is more efficient at storing shows since it is digital to digital so you ma
Cons: The reliability of the units is not the best. I had to get my series 1 unit replaced and if the power source is not perfect with my direcTV series 2 box it can cut out. I now have it plugged into a UPS and it has helped dramatically.
