Summary: I have been through a couple of laptop coolers and none of them worked all that well. I have an IBM T60p laptop using an external monitor. The position of the video out is right near the CPU and fan builtin the laptop. The external video causes the laptop to overheat and basically lock up the video.
I have used the Allsop metal (passive) cooler. It raies the laptop about 3" off the desk, and really it is designed to stack stuff under the laptop, but since it's all metal it does a semi-decent job of cooling.
I have also used a Gear Head dual fan pad that sits under the laptop. It is powered by USB, and I got it pretty cheap ($10). It is terribly noisy, and the fans seem to do nothing at all to cool the laptop. In order to get better performance from it I had to reverse the cooling pad (upside down) and raise it off the desk about 2 inches. I also tried using it in combination with the Allsop, but this just didn't work.
I came across the Antec Notebook Cooler Togo at Fry's on sale for $10 (the non "S" model; mine is black plastic). I was skeptical that any laptop cooler would work, and boy was I wrong. This Antec is amazing. Two fans, USB powered, and I believe the fans have ball bearings in them because it is crazy quiet (compared to the other one I used). I had to position the Antec a little further back from the backside of the laptop so that the fans were fully open. I am also using this in conjunction with the Allsop (which raises the laptop about 3 inches off the desk). This combination has SIGNIFICANTLY cooled off the laptop, and it hasn't overheated once since I got it (two months ago). I use my PC approximately 10 hours a day 5-6 days a week. This is the only device that has been able to keep up with my schedule. I fully recommend this Antec Notebook Cooler Togo.
