Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand (white) price range: $11.60 - $28.83

The good: Attractive white design; effective cooling, built-in tilt stand.
The bad: Only one fan; small footprint unsuitable for bigger laptops.
The bottom line: The Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand manages to both look good and offer effective cooling, despite having only a single fan.
The most-effective laptop cooling devices we've seen involve fans that suck warm air away from the laptop's bottom. Both the Antec Notebook Cooler and the smaller Antec Notebook Cooler S use dual fans, but the $29.99 Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand manages to offer effective cooling with only a single fan.
Measuring 11.5 inches wide by 11.25 inches deep by a little more than one inch high, the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand is best suited for 15-inch or smaller laptops. A larger desktop replacement will have to balance on top, extending over the left and right sides by several inches. Rubber pads on the top prevent slippage, but a wider cooling stand, such as the Antec Notebook Cooler, would be a bit more stable. For the aesthetically oriented, the Belkin's white, curved design is a nice change from the gray/silver industrial look of the other devices we've looked at.
A small plastic panel folds out from the bottom of the device, elevating the rear slightly for better ergonomics. The single fan, powered by a USB port on your laptop, sits in the middle of the slightly concave cooling stand, and hot air is channeled out to the left and right sides of your laptop.
Using a popular business laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T60, we put the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand to the test by running CNET Labs' grueling Multitasking test on the system and recording the CPU temperature.
Running the test without the laptop desk, the CPU got as hot as 80.8 degrees. After a cool-down period, we ran the test again, this time with the laptop sitting on the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand. The highest temperature recorded during the second test was 75 degrees, a solid decrease and virtually indistinguishable from our two other leading laptop coolers, the passive Xpad Laptop Desk and the dual-fan Antec Notebook Cooler.

A great solution to a common problem. Perfect fit for my 15" Toshiba laptop and my Sumdex bag.
by bbclurman on October 19, 2007
Pros: Effective cooling, light weight, works well on lap or table top.
Cons: flimsy usb connector, plastic compartment and fold down stand somewhat difficult to open and close.

Summary: The Belkin cooling pad deserves its top rating. It is a stable work stand for a small or moderate size computer. It creates a much more pleasant work enviroment. Working without the constant heat generated by a laptop is boon in and of itself the ability to achieve it with almost no additional noise is almost miraculous. This is a best buy for the right size computer. My computer bag is designed for a 15.4" laptop with sufficient room for the pad as well as my cables etc.

Does its job cooling, but has bad proportions
by johnaar on October 17, 2007
Pros: Good cooling; Good non-slip strips on the top and bottom edges of the stand
Cons: Arched design prevents storage in a laptop bag; narrow width and length causes average laptops to hang off of all four sides of the stand resulting in poor stability

Summary: 90% of the time I strongly agree with CNET's ratings, but I strongly disagree with CNET's rating of this product. I suspect CNET's rating was primarily based on cooling and style.
I have a Gateway M250, which is a widescreen laptop. My laptop significantly hangs off the left and right sides, and slightly hangs off the top and bottom sides. This over-hanging causes my laptop to be somewhat unstable on the laptop stand. The only thing that keeps my laptop from falling off is the non-slip strips on the top and bottom of the laptop stand. This laptop stand has a sleek look and cools appropriately, but its awkward shape prevents it from being portable and its small size makes typing an endeavor with fear of rocking your laptop off the stand as you type. (I cannot pack this product in my laptop bag and my bag is reasonably spacious). This is one type of product in which the importance functionality far outweighs style. I recommend buying a more functional, flatter, longer, and wider laptop stand.
Bottom Line: While cooling is important, flatness and surface area matters.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good laptop cooler for desktop use
by bigsnaff on August 25, 2008

Summary: While this cooler may have been designed for a 15" computer, I have no problems using it with my 17" Dell. The rubber grips well and as long as the laptop is centered, it will stay solidly on the cooler. The angle is very nice and ergonomic. I only bought this for desktop use to help extend the life of my laptop (I keep it on all the time) and 99% of the time, that's where it stays where it does a fine job. The one time I did pick it up to move it and use it on my lap, my finger went into the fan on the back and I almost dropped the the computer. Watch out for fan bite! When I put it on my lap, it blocked the fan completely and clothing was able to get into the fan slot and stop it. Also, the legs don't lock out solidly so moving it around on the desktop will cause them to collapse. Not major, just annoying. Not good for lap use, but fine for desktop.
Would love to see a two or three fan extra long version come out for large laptops like mine that stay on desktops for more cooling and stability, but this is ok.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: All laptops have the same design fault. The cooling port is blocked off by lap, pillow, rug etc. Cooling Stands help, but not because of their fans. The small "centrifugal fans" necessarily suck in their centre and blow on their perimeter. The CPU fan sucks air from directly beneath up into the laptop and out the sides. A Cooling Stand fan sucks down and sideways from the same space the laptop is trying to suck up. This doesn't help. It takes power and makes noise. However the Stand does solve the real problem but doesn't need the fan to do it. It conveniently and cheaply makes sure the normal laptop cooling air passage is not impeded.
Here's a solution with hobby store materials.

Good Cooling Properties, Crappy Fan
by westernwoman26 on November 23, 2009
Pros: The cooling fan is very efficient and allows the air to easily be passed through the bottom of the laptop, maximizing cooling.
Cons: Within two weeks, the first fan stopped working. I received a replacement, and within a month, two of the fan blades have broken on the outer edges of the fan casing.
Summary: Great cooling properties and good design, but the fan's own design is very poor. Be prepared to replace the entire thing very frequently.

Does the job
by JulzPlanet on November 10, 2009
Pros: built in tilt and cools laptop nicely
Cons: a little noisy and fan tends to clip the finger tips when lifting the tilter.
Summary: the price was right, does a nice job of keeping the laptop cool, and I've had it for over 2 years and it keeps going and going.

Design Flaw
by neeciejax on October 28, 2009
Pros: nice design, but cannot sit down without it sucking up the couch, carpet etc.
Cons: Went to put the flap down to put it at an angle. My finger went into the fan and cut it and it bled. needs to have a screen of some sort to prevent injury!

OK at cooling but very noisy
by kfinnell on October 26, 2009
Pros: It has an attractive design & does it's job of cooling the laptop fairly well.
Cons: The fan is very noisy so I am constantly having to adjust laptop placement to try & quiet the sound.
Summary: Not worth the hassle.

Piece of Garbage. DON'T BUY
by adammccune on September 8, 2009
Pros: Looked like it was from Star Trek
Cons: Everything. I brought it home, set it up, and my laptop slides off of it all the time. The rubber pads aren't hefty enough to hold a widescreen laptop. The plug for the cord kept breaking. I opened it, it was GLUED in. What? Breaks all the time.
Summary: I've noticed that Belkin produces nice looking stuff that isn't too hefty. It's like buying a Mercedes with the interior from a Yugo. Makes no sense. This ...
