Don't Let the Inexpensive Price Fool You - This Is a Very Dissapointing Product
by MikeCronin on April 12, 2007
Pros: Small and lightweight design
Cons: Does not handle heat well; is poorly constructed and too flimsy to handle any medium to large latop

Summary: I purchased the Targus Notebook LapDesk system as a tool to use with my 17" Dell Laptop. I work (and play) on the laptop from the couch and my bed, so the combination of a wide "tray" system and propping design seemed like a perfect fit. Unfortunately, this product did not deliver for either purpose.
As a laptop "tray" system, the device is too small and flimsy to handle the weight and size of most medium to large laptops (I tested with both my 15.4" and 17" screen laptops. While the width of the product is good, it is not deep enough to support the full size of the laptop, causing both the front and rear of the base to essentially hang off.
Any claims regarding heat management are completely false as a tray system as well. Not only does my laptop get just as hot when using this, the lack of insulation causes the bottom of the plastic to get so hot it burns my leg sometimes. What's worse, the cheap rubber "feet" on the top do not adequately hold the laptop in place, and they give off an aweful smell from being heated up.
Enough of the tray system, how does it work when used to prop the laptop up on an angle? Not at all! The cheap metal leg used to lock the folder-over plastic into place is help in place by flimsy plastic. Within the first two days of use, the metal broke out of its grove and it could no longer be used in this fashion.
While I have not yet tried any alternative products, I can't imagine them working any more poorly than this device did. Buyer beware!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not quite up to task

Summary: I read many reviews on this item, but decided to make my own decision and try it since it was the only one available at Best Buy near me. Well, it does function but I'm not impressed. My laptop is a new HP dv9000 and I use it primarily for gaming, so I needed a mouse area which is another reason I bought this. I want the ability to sit on my couch and game away rather than a chair (I work at a desk all day as it is). I had previously made a make-shift lapdesk by taking a top off of a wooden t.v. dinner tray and it worked great except it was too small and kind of heavy. This Targus item only seemed to work well and give good ventilation to the laptop fan when it was on top of the wood table top, which defeats the whole purpose. It does have a mouse area, which is sufficient for a Trackball mouse (so you don't have to actually move the mouse), but would be better for a smaller and lighter laptop than mine. To their credit, the package does say it is for laptops up to 5lbs I think, and mine is like 7.5 or somewhere in that range. I just don't think most people are going to be satisfied with this product unless you are strictly doing word processing or spreadsheet type work in an airport or in a vehicle. It lacks a lot of integrity, and basically, a lot of users need a larger surface to work with.

Don't Bother to buy this
by bipindra on April 9, 2006
Pros: Light Weight
Cons: Will break / crack if you have a little heavy laptop
Summary: Don't even bother to buy this. It is just waste of time and not worth it, rather buy a vegetable cutting board wit holes.

Summary: This is the most versatile laptop platform for your lap OR the desk. I have used it on my lap for hours at a time, and it has kept my laptop from overheating. You do get warmth through the device, but it is far less than you would have with your laptop sitting directly on you. You're also not holding on to the laptop all the time thanks to the size of the LapDesk.

This thing is Junk!!
by kbrobeil on November 22, 2007
Pros: lightweight
Cons: flimsy. i have had two (one was a replacement form the company. Both broke in the hinges simply using it open and flat on my lap for a laptop.
Summary: this is simply not a good value I have had two break in less than 18 months. better off getting something solid like Staples sells.
