Summary: This is a great platformer in the Mario-style genre. I love this game and this is certainly a good way to get my fix when I don't have my GBA copies of Super Mario World or Super Mario Brothers 3. If you're not a fan, this won't make you turn around and try it, but for us fanboys it is a must-have.
It doesn't have the world's best features, unfortunately. You can't play multi-player in the main game of this title, as you could in previous Mario side-scrollers. This is a big minus for me because I love passing the Mario love around on buses during chorus trips (high school) or hanging out with my girlfriend. It was a good way for me and her to have fun together while playing video games. It was a feature that fostered both cooperation AND competition, and it didn't require multiple systems. You could just pass the game back and forth. For shame, Nintendo...for shame.
The multi-player mode, however, is pretty decent as is. It's not the co-op from before, but it's okay if your friend has a DS.
Also, the mini-games are directly recycled from Super Mario 64 DS, which is simply shameful again.
The true saving grace of this game is its
main game. The platforming action is engaging, simple, challenging, and fun all over. Veterans won't be thrilled and will find a short game, but those of us who aren't the best will find a game with a reduced difficulty and more than adequate length. It doesn't destroy the challenge, but it's just a little bit less intimidating.
In short: Multi-player not the world's best, but the Single-player will bring you to your knees, in a good way.0 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

The New Super Mario Bros. Game for the Nintendo DS boosts the best visuals and audio of any classic Super Mario game in the franchise with a catchy tune.
I owned the Nintendo DS along with this game for under 48 hours.
I returned it the moment I had realized that this game was more frustration than enjoyment.
While the first world full of levels were easy enough to get started, the following levels changed things enough.
By the time I had played half of the 4th World (out of 8), I had enough.
I am not a hardcore video gamer like most fanboys. I prefer games that are not just fun, but also entertaining without restriction and I feel that Nintendo made enough frustrating levels to warrant this game to be annoyingly frustrating.
In this game, the player must complete a multitude of levels (some have multiple endings).
This game is not as entertaining as "Super Mario Bros. 3" for me in where I can strategize the gameplay with a full inventory control at my disposal.
In this new Mario adventure, the level maps hide the details of your power ups.
For example, you might see a flying question block hovering above the entrance to a particular level.
What you don't see is what type of power-up it is.
So, if you require a particular item to complete the level, you are unable to strategize and chose which item to use.
Perhaps if I didn't mind wasting countless hours on trying to complete a certain level to obtain a certain exit by using a certain item, then I might feel different.
If you are a hard-core video game player, you can disregard this product review, but if you are a casual player who is just looking for a few blissful hours of enjoyment, then I will offer my subjective review for your consideration.

The characters of the Super Mario franchise are usually consistent across the various "Super Mario" games - except for this one.
As a perfect example, all the usual characters from the past games (Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, etc.) all return in their 3D visual perspective.
But some of the newer characters arrive flat and look like a child hand drawn them.
Look at the swimming levels as a perfect example.
There is a particular swimming level where this gigantic fish swims across the screen.
This fish looks flat, like it was hand drawn by a kid.
I was shocked to see something of such low quality actually in this (DS) game.
On another level, an end boss did not resemble any of the Super Mario characters.
It was this creature that rose from under the ground. You must bop it on the head 3 times and it spit out boulders.
While I only provided two examples of how inconsistent this game is, it was enough to warrant this review.

Updated on Oct 8, 2010Here I am, several years later and after watching videos on YouTube that illustrate how to play this (difficult) game, I decided to give it another try.
After playing this game from start to finish several times, achieving a perfect game -- I can say that this game is very good.
It is not for everyone.
You will need to acquire superior gameplay skills that involve very precise jumps with absolute perfect timing.
With good strategy and plenty of practice, this game delivers -- but you will need to earn it.
If you are a casual player like myself, be prepared for a serious and tedious learning curve.
Recommended: Yes, but not for everyone.0 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.
