The good: Fast DVD burner; lots of solid software included; can squeeze extra data onto standard CDs; excellent manual; toll-free phone support.
The bad: Roxio software is last year's edition.
The bottom line: Though double-layer burning is getting all the hype, you're still better off with a single-layer burner: this one.

Not as wonderful as I expected
by outsdr on February 28, 2005
Pros: Has options no other burner has
Cons: Customer service needs work, only burns on selected brands of media

Summary: I bought this drive after reading many reviews saying it was _the_ DVD burner to have, especially for backing up game disks. I have had this drive for almost 2 months, and have yet to get it to properly burn a re-writable disc, be it CD or DVD. I tried many different brands of media, with no luck. I even went as far as doing a drive format and reinstallation of Windows XP Pro.
Finally, I detailed everything I had done and tried in an email sent to Plextor customer service... they obviously didn't even read it, as the reply that came back days later suggested I run the self-diagnostics, which my original email had already clearly stated I had done already.
After I pointed this out, the next email suggested I try diferent brands of media from the approved list. Again, I wrote back to remind them that this was something I had already done, as I stated in my original email. The rep also told me not to use a brand that _was_ on the approved list, and recommended as reliable a brand that _was not_ on the approved list. Finally, I was approved for an RMA.
The ticket number took 3 days to be issued, I submitted my RMA request one week ago and have not yet had a reply.
This is not what I expected from a supposedly reliable and reputable company.9 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

This burner simply doesn't work as advertised

Pros: I can't think of any

Summary: This burner simply doesn't burn DVDs as fast as it should. I had some TDK 4x +R disks that it could supposedly burn at 8X. Will it did, as long as you don't mind errors. I also tried to burn 8x -R Verbatim disks at 8X and also got errors. It can't even burn some 48X CD-R media at 48x (TDK brand), although it does burn Mitsui Gold disks at 48x. Then there's the firmware upgrade issue. I believe it was version 1.05 that was nonfunctional.
That's it for me-I've bought my last Plextor product, after buying 4 previously.7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Extremely disappointing.. Max DVD burn speed is 4X
by arrgh on February 28, 2005
Pros: Rips DVDs extremely well

Summary: I specified my new system with a PX712A based on Plextor's reputation and some good reviews. My experience is that the drive performs no better than my 4 year old Sony 4X drive for DVD burning, which I do a LOT of. I tried several premium brands including Verbatim 16X... none would burn DVDs reliably at more than 4X. Don't waste your money on this one.

Don't get burned with non-DL
Pros: This is a fabulous drive - Plextor always offers a great feature set, incredibly speedy accross formats, it even looks good. . . however. . .
Cons: I can't dismiss DL capabilities as easily as CNET apparently can. If you want to "back up" DVD movies without significant data loss or have the option of placing massive amounts of data on your DVDs, you will want DL functionality. Considering that Plex

Summary: This dvd burner is junk. It took plextor several months to get the first firmware out so i could burn at 8x. That lasted for 3 months and then back to the same problem. A more recent firmware is released and I install the new one and it works for like a 2 months. Now i'm back to 2x and 1x burning. Overated junk I'm telling you.

Fast & reliable
Pros: Got one of these (in black) for my home-brew system. Works great, very fast and reliable. No coasters so far. Fun to tweak settings.
Cons: Expensive. May be obsoleted by newer DVD formats. Middling software bundle.

Fast, but problems
Pros: Burns fast
Cons: High pitched whine, thought first unit was defective and returned it on advice from Plextor support but 2nd unit has same whine. 12x DVD burn is deceptive, next to impossible to find the few media that it can burn at that speed. Even CD burner will only u
