The good: Excellent image quality; upscaling to 1080p over HDMI; attractive, understated black design; multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI; DivX/Xvid support; aspect-ratio control; can be made region-free with a simple hack.
The bad: Worth it only for use with 1080p TVs with an HDMI input; no component video output.
The bottom line: Performing nearly as well as players costing four times the price, the Oppo DV-981HD is an unbeatable bargain for videophiles and enthusiasts.

Almost HD!

Summary: I tried a Sony BDP S301, and returned it after several weeks use. I was totally frustrated by sluggish performance, the format "war", and lack of available titles among other things. Oppo playback image quality does not quite equal that of a really good blu-ray disc, but it is close enough. My standard discs now have a quality that has to be seen!
I am now happy to wait until the dust has settled on the HD player issues. -
Great way to wait out the format war and prices.

Pros: Awesome picture and audio decoding capability...
Cons: very few...possibly a mutliple dvd tray in the future?

Summary: The Oppo really is a great player to have in my component system, because I am not replacing my regular DVD collection anytime soon. The picture and upscaling is wonderful.
One point often overlooked with the Oppo is the audio decoding capabilty of this player. The super-DVD and DVD-audio add another dimension to the listening experience. For me this was one of the biggest reasons to buy this player. I could find other upscaling players, but it was difficult to find a player that would do as much audio decoding (especially at this price).
Bottom line- The Oppo is a great choice for those who have a decent HDMI ready HT receiver, HD TV, and a substantial standard DVD collection. If you don't want to run out and spend a small fortune on new generation players and DVDs, the Oppo is smart. You won't be disappointed.
Also, I think the player looks better in real life than it does on the Oppo web sight. -
Worth taking a look at

Summary: I have a Pioneer 4270HD tv and this dvd player has done wonders with the picture and sound in comparison with my old Toshiba upconverting player. For those who don't know, this dvd player has a faroudja chip which pretty much cleans the picture by taking out the jagged lines(jaggies) seen with most player. Few things to know: 1. if your tv has anything less than a 10 bit proccessor you will have macroblocking. The higher the better. 2. I've found a bit of noise on flat backgrounds. 3. If your tv is not 1080p use 720p not 1080i. 4. Another thing I've noticed is in stable backgrounds the image moves or shifts really quickly. If anyone else noticed this please email me.
None the less, it gives you a great picture. If you have video of a waving flag, watch how smooth it is. The colours are well represented and the images has great detail. Even though I have a crappy Bose 3-2-1 system, the sound was improved with the Oppo. Overall my final recomendation is this, if your equipment is not up to date(namely your tv), this may not be the dvd player for you. Other wise, it's everything and more than you'd get with anything remotely close to this price range.
Next I'm going to upgrade my tv and sound system. For any further info on home theatre related topics email me dbuudo07@hotmail.com and I'll reply as soon as possible. -

Fantastic DVD Player
by ehaze on June 15, 2007
Pros: Plays most any DVD, good upscale via HDMI
Cons: blue is too dark to read from more than 5 ft away, better remote
Summary: HAD A Sony DVP-NS75H UPSCALING DVD PLAYER BEFORE THIS ONE. THIS ONE COST ALMOST TWICE AS MUCH, BUT WORTH IT FOR PICTURE QUAILITY FOR ANY REGULAR DVD COLLECTION. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Summary: Sound quality is strong and rich, easy remote and great picture once you get upconverting to cooperate. Maybe I am doing something wrong (and if i am please say so), but there is no picture on my Pioneer 5070HD unless i stop the disc and toggle the HDMI button on the remote to whatever works....
for example i had the Oppo set to 1080i and it worked for one dvd movie "blow" then i replace it with a U2 concert DVD and i got audio only till i stopped the disc and hit the HDMI button to select 480 or 720...no picture and manual resolution searching....????
the pioneer 5070hd i have is the top 2006 model but its native resolution is 1365 x 768 but according to cnet it can accept a 1080p signal...can it display one? Be sure to check how far you can upconvert based on how much your tv can accept -

Summary: Wow! what an amazing purchase. The difference between this player and my old DVD - holy cow! I had to find bad things to ay about this player. Really, often you would think that you arte watching HD images. I realy do not notice th build quality because the player is tucked away and I use the remote to slide the tray in nd out and to otherwise control the player. I would recommend this player to anyone and thats for sure!

Tough to beat!
by Ed Mueller on May 7, 2007
Pros: Fantastic Upconversion, Great option set
Cons: 1080p makes some standard DVD's look worse, Chose to set the unit at 720p.
Summary: Lives up to advertised promises, and to the Oppo hype. Outperforms any upscaling DVD player I have used to date (which includes Pioneer, Denon, Toshiba, RCA and Sony). For the ...

Summary: I have the predecessor to the 981. The 971, which for the money is damn hard to beat. If you have a high definition TV or not this is the player..The audio side isn't great for high end audio, but for basic home theater setups its great..I also have the Denon 955S $799, which is great as well but much more costly
