Ok Picture....but it won't play dvd's
by GddyAz on May 28, 2011
Pros: Easy setup, decent picture, cheap prices
Cons: Skips/Pauses on playback (even with brand new dvds)
Summary: I purchased this dvd player wanting an upconverting player for my collection of dvd's.

From the get go, it would skip and pause while playing back. I thought perhaps my dvd's were too scratched. I purchased a new dvd a while later, and it still happened. Now I know it isn't a scratched dvd issue, but the 90 day warranty is out. Congratulations, Philips wants nothing to do with me. I figured that since dvd players have been available for 10+ years, making a quality product would be a no brainer. Not the case for Philips.
Features, picture and price are great. But beware of quality. Now I have a useless dvd player.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good for the price; Wide format acceptance.
by SunnyDanSan on November 14, 2011
Pros: MPEG1, MPEG2, MP3, JPEG, WMV, and WMA format compatibility on DVD, CD, and USB. Cheap ($40). Good 480p and 480i performance. Simple, intuitive remote.
Cons: Remote squishy and sometimes unresponsive. USB only supports FAT32 and FAT16 drive formatting. Overscan on CRT not avoidable.
Summary: Philips 3560/F7. Overall, this is a good unit for the money. That said, I should note that I am running this unit in 480p with the component hookups; I ...
Summary: Philips 3560/F7. Overall, this is a good unit for the money. That said, I should note that I am running this unit in 480p with the component hookups; I am not running HDMI and not running the up-conversion. At the time of this review, I've watched about 12 hours of commercial DVDs (mostly scuffed up NetFlix DVDs), 24 hours of burned DVDs (RW and -R), and 4 hours from USB thumb-drive (FAT32 format).
The bad: The remote is soft and sometimes unresponsive. The picture does seem to overscan (project larger than the screen) on my CRT, but the picture frames correctly on my girlfriend's LCD (provided overscan is turned off on the TV). The overscan is most annoying during JPEG slideshows. I did have one random pause and one artifact on one burned DVD.
The mediocre: It does not play NTFS or exFAT formatted USB devices. Why is this an issue? FAT32 (the largest supported format for USB on this DVD player) will not hold single files larger than 4GB; thus uncompressed, full-length, HD movies will not load onto compatible USB devices. Though limited, USB thumb-drive access for shorter or appropriately compressed video, music, or JPEG slideshows is nice. It doesn't support MP4 with h264 (the more common MP4 codec).
The good: Besides the one DVD mentioned above, playback was flawless. Burned DVDs, be they regular format, MPEG1, or MPEG2, play well. Burned MP3 CDs, JPEG CDs, and CDA CDs play fine. Same with USB stuff of the same formats. It does what it is supposed to, at least at 480p.
Sure, it is constructed of the cheapest plastic around, and the remote is the least impressive I've owned. But if you want a cheap player that accepts more formats that the typical player, this is the way to go. $40 isn't likely to buy you the latest and greatest, so don't expect it; but it will buy you a perfectly acceptable player.
If you don't want the broad format acceptance, Sony has a model in this price range without upconversion, which has resume-from-last-stop (my favorite feature). If you want superior overall video and very broad format acceptance, you should shell out for a good BluRay and a separate WDTV settop box.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

THIS IS A TOP NOTCH BARGAIN DO IT ALL DVD PLAYER!
by Jusbeinhonest on February 12, 2011
Pros: Compact and stylish, 2.0 USB Port that plays .avi and just about any format movie file downloaded from your PC. Upscaling is more than adequate. LOW PRICE.
Cons: Remote is semi cheesy and has a limited range.

Summary: This is one of a very few DVD players that basically does everything but make you breakfast. It is fast, sleek and does everything it claims to do. If you are looking for a very inexpensive upscaling DVD player with a powerful USB port to allow you to do basically anything, this is for you. Best DVD player I have ever owned.
Note: I still have my four year old Philips that did all the same, but lacked the USB port. Philips is quality.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
