The good: Excellent image quality in 1080i and 1080p/24 mode; Ethernet jack for firmware updates; Dolby TrueHD decoding.
The bad: Image quality in 1080p mode disappointing; no analog multichannel outputs; not much of an upgrade over cheaper HD-A3.
The bottom line: The Toshiba HD-A30 is a solid third-generation HD DVD player, but for most people it's not worth the extra dough.

Summary: Bought this player for my new plasma. Wow! Picture is sharp and detailed in 1080p/24 mode. I wouldn't run it any other way. Makes my old DVD collection look HD "like". It's a very good player for it's price point for sure.

Summary: I expected 40 to 60 second start up times, turned out to be more like 60 to 120 seconds. I expected excellent 1080p output, turned out to be a notch less than excellent. I expected it to play DVD's better than my progressive scan 6 year old Pioneer, it did not.
won't knock your socks off

Summary: I have to say I expected the HD-A30 to knock my socks off with 1080P. But after the first 15 minutes of the Bourne Identity I realized that I was caught up in the hype of an inferior product. Maybe not a product, but an inferior technology. I'm not trying to say that this is a bad machine. I'm saying for the money, and all of the hype, I expect more. Does it look better than SD? Of course. But no different from the 1080i my satellite broadcast. If I pay for 1080p I want 1080p! That's not too much to ask.
All that being said I would never go to blu-ray. No reason, just my opinion. If you have to go high def this isn't a bad player. Just don't expect it to be the difference in quality you had hoped for.
im not new to HD it still blew me away

Summary: I have owned three upconversion dvd players before buying this one and after buying 2 players around 200$ and still not happy with the picture i finaly layed out the cash for a $600 denon sale price!and spent the next 6 months tweeking it off and on and still never getting the picture i wanted common a denon!! i said. at that point i just figured ill wait til electronics improve see how even quality wasnt going to cut it with the denon .I was out shopping for the thanksgiving week black friday sales and came accross the toshiba on sale with 7 movies and jumped at it took it home and was blown away even with the upconverion compared to my 600$ denon, then i put in a hd dvd i was in love and now with the new firmware updated im gonna ask it to marry me lol,one thing you guys need to understand gone are the days of buying products and beeing stuck like computers sometimes you just need to update what you bought never give up on a purchase until you know for sure its the device itself .it is a good thing that we can fix things now with a down load .unfortunatky manufactures count on this and i disagree with this they should ship it at its best potentail and not make us update the first day we open it but my denon didnt have this option and it got great reviews from most places

Pros: Good up-convert for regular DVDs and 1080i processing
Cons: No difference between 1080i and 1080p freezes up on DVD-R

Summary: I am not happy at all with this player. It does not play MP3, does not play any of my DVD-R (freezes up on all after about 20 minutes), and is a waste of time if you cannot afford or find a 1080p/24 tv. My HDDVDs looked much better in 1080i. No point in having a 1080p tv with one.
